Tumors had been misdiagnosed and under- documented for longtime in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has not any cancer registry available up today. The National Cancer Registry is an important tool to deal with cancer management, especially for the National Cancer Plan and cancer prevention. The African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) is trying to help many Countries to hold their national Registries in hope to provide tumors’ data. Despite National Cancer Registry, hospital Registries can be used for preliminary researches. This is a retrospective study performed to determine epidemiological and clinical data of tumors in Lubumbashi City, the second city in DRC, especially in the mines’ hospital during the period from 2007 to 2017. The authors collected data from 350 patients aged from 2 and 94 years. The average age was 46.3 ± 17.9 years. There were 299 Females and 51 males; means 85.4 vs 14.6%. Tumors of the female reproductive system accounted for 72.9%. Diagnosis was made by echography in 59.7% of cases. Palliative care was the main treatment in 51% of cases. This study has enlightened the fact that tumors are a serious problem of health in the Democratic Republic of Congo and there are many challenges to improve cancer survival in this country.

First introduced in 1963, ommaya reservoirs (OmRs) are indwelling intraventricular catheters used for decompression of hydrocephalus, antibiotics, and chemotherapy delivery. They are important alternatives when lumbar punctures are not practical or when long-term administration of medications is needed. Despite being used for over 50 years, placement of these devices can still contribute to significant morbidity and mortality. We performed a single-center retrospective review at the University of Florida Cancer Center evaluating OmR related complications in patients in whom OmR was placed for chemotherapy. We also conducted a systematic review of OmR related and LP complications in setting of chemotherapy delivery. 13 patients met criteria for inclusion in this retrospective study. Time points evaluated for complications were: placement, up to 6 months, 6-12 months, > 12 months, removal and post-discharge. Our institutional data showed a complicated rate of <7% at each time point. For systematic review, 38 studies were reviewed for OmR data, and 8 studies were reviewed for LP data. Infectious complications were more prevalent in OmR studies with statistical significance (p=0.0017), whereas noninfectious complications were more prevalent in LP studies with statistical significance (p=0.0004). This study compared complication rates from infectious and non-infectious sources between patients receiving intrathecal chemotherapy through Ommaya reservoirs versus lumbar puncture. OmR can be very useful in long-term administration of medication, and the relatively high complication rate (especially infectious) can be deemed an acceptable risk for patient population with high morbidity.

The objective of this study is to show that the presence of koilocytosis on the cervical smear is the only possibility to detect Papillomavirus infection in cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia in women living in Lubumbashi. This is a cross-sectional analytical study on the data collected from the register of women who participated in the cervix lesion screening campaign organized in Lubumbashi in March 2012 by the Congolese League Against Cancer. A total of 545 women with cervical lesions have been selected. The following results were observed: the frequency of HPV infection is 35% in Lubumbashi women. The risk of developing intraepithelial neoplasia is 38.3 times higher in women infected with HPV compared to uninfected ones (OR = 38.3, 95% CI = 16.3-90.3). HPV is predominantly present in intraepithelial neoplasia (92.7%) and this regardless of their grade: 91.9% for low-grade neoplasia and 95% for high-grade neoplasia. HPV is found in both older women and older women, respectively in 45% of women aged less than 36 years and in 55% of women aged over 36 years old. This study shows that it is necessary to put in place adequate means for the detection of HPV in order to contribute to the fight against cervical cancer in Lubumbashi.

: Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the effect of predictive nursing intervention on the gastrointestinal side effects of I-131 re-treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Methods: From January 2017 to August 2018, we invited patient with DTC who received I-131 re-treatment to enroll in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to control or predictive nursing intervention groups using a random number table. The primary outcomes were the incidence of gastrointestinal side effects and degree of patient satisfaction with respect to nursing. Patients in the intervention group received predictive nursing intervention, and patients in the control group received common nursing intervention. Result: A total of 69 patients were enrolled in the study. In patient characteristic, the gender, age and disease status were no significantly different for the participants in two groups. In addition, intervention group participants had less gastrointestinal side effect events, including nausea, vomiting and anorexia (10 vs 3, 8 vs 1, 12 vs 2). In nursing satisfaction assessment, intervention group participants provided better outcome in nursing satisfaction assessment compared with control group, that they provided most very satisfied assessment to predictive nursing intervention. Conclusion: Predictive nursing helped decrease the incidence of gastrointestinal side effects and improved patient satisfaction with nursing. Predictive nursing may be effective in DTC patients receiving I-131 re-treatment.

: Castleman’s Disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of idiopathic etio-pathogenesis and was first described by Dr Benjamin Castleman in 1954. It is a rather rare disease entity in clinical practice. However, the incidence cannot be ignored. It may affect a single lymph node (Unicentric CD) or multiple lymph nodes throughout the body (Multicentric CD). Management depends upon the type and severity of the disease and early recognition of the condition. Our case report is that of a 60-year-old female patient with underlying comorbidities including type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism who presented with complaints of generalized weakness, weight loss, hair loss, non-resolving muco-purulent rhinorrhea, bilateral pedal edema and multiple, non-tender, firm and mobile left sided Level I and II ‘AJCC’ cervical lymphadenopathy of >2cm which was later biopsied and diagnosed to be Castleman’s disease associated POEMS syndrome. The aim of this report is to consider CD as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with similar clinical picture and early identification and treatment may provide a better prognosis. We would also like to highlight 3 take home points: 1) The significance of histology in differentiating it from other lymph proliferative conditions. 2) LN excision of the bothersome LN can be diagnostic and may be considered therapeutic to some extend even in MCD. 3) Steroid therapy has beneficial effects to control progression of the disease.
