Abstract Background: Nutrition labelling, as a way of communication between consumers and the food industry, allows them to make more conscious, informed and safe choices when purchasing food products. Simplified nutrition labelling systems are considered one of the best tools for the promotion of healthy eating habits. Aim: This cross-sectional descriptive study aims to evaluate the use of the front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labelling in the food choices of Portuguese consumers, as a complement to the Nutritional Declaration, through an online survey. Methods: The total sample consists of 120 Portuguese individuals, aged between 18-55 years. Data was collected during the January of 2022. Socio-demographic data, knowledge about food labelling and knowledge about FOP nutrition labelling systems (Nutrition Traffic Light and Nutri-Score) were collected. Results: The results highlight a statistically significant association between gender and the choice to read food labels (p=0.004) and reveal that information expressed on nutrition labels affects consumers’ decision (p=0.015), both at the time of purchase. FOP system (p=0.014) as well as location (p=0.010) was preferred to traditional Nutrition Declaration, regarding food label reading. The interest in the product’s nutritional value appears to be the main significant motive for influencing label reading (p=0.021). No other statistical relevance was found. Conclusion: To sum up, when purchasing, the information, location and design of nutrition labels tends to affect consumers’ decisions. Thus, food education campaigns amongst the population are necessary to minimize nutritional literacy gaps. However, future studies are needed to assess the impact of the Nutri-Score system on consumers’ food choices. Keywords: Nutrition Labelling, Simplified Nutrition Labelling Systems, Front-of-Pack (Fop), Consumers, Food Choices.

Cape gooseberry is a wild plant whose fruits and leaves have been widely used in traditional medicine due to its multiple beneficial health properties, which can be improved using elicitors during cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the foliar application of chitosan (0, 10, 25 and 50 mg/L), hydrogen peroxide (0, 50, 100 and 150 µM) and sodium nitroprusside (0, 50, 100 and 150 µM) on cape gooseberry plants and its effect on the metabolite content, antioxidant capacity and digestive enzyme inhibitory activity of leaves. Results showed that foliar application of chitosan at 25 and 50 mg/L or sodium nitroprusside 100 and 150 µM during cultivation of cape gooseberry significantly improved the phenolic compounds, flavonoids, proline, and total chlorophyll contents of methanolic extracts of leaves, enhancing its antioxidant capacity, as well as α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, without affecting the growth of the plants, whereas hydrogen peroxide 150 µM improved the flavonoid content and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity, however, this treatment decreased the proline content of leaves. Therefore, elicitors as chitosan and sodium nitroprusside, applied at low concentrations during growth of plants, could be considered as a tool to improve the nutraceutical potential of cape gooseberry leaves.

Hyperphosphatemia increases mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Hyperphosphatemia in MHD patients is affected by diet and phosphate binders treatment. Thus, we undertook observational research to determine how dietary phosphorus consumption and phosphate binders adherence affect serum phosphate and phosphorus-to-protein ratio (PPR) in MHD. Associations of serum phosphate were examined with identified dietary patterns, organic (plant and animal-based) and inorganic, and whether the patients fully or partially adhered to the phosphate binders. We found a significant difference in phosphate binders on animal and plant sources, high with the animal pattern. However, our study showed no significant correlation in serum phosphate levels. This result could be due to phosphate bioavailability differing by food source and adherence of phosphate binders, which reflect the quantity of phosphate absorbed in the intestines. However, further mechanistic study is warranted. Keywords: Dietary phosphorus, Maintenance hemodialysis, Serum phosphate, Phosphorustoprotein ratio

A bidirectional relationship exists between tuberculosis (TB) and nutrition. To examine the dietary intakes of tuberculosis (TB) patients and to identify the factors associated with dietary deficiencies. In this cross-sectional study, 173 newly diagnosed sputum smear-positive TB patients, and taking treatment in the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) were included. Nutrient intakes were evaluated through one day 24-h dietary recall and compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Data on dietary intake was analyzed using DietSoft software. The mean (SD) age of the study participants was 45.5 (18.7) years with majority male (73.4%). More than one-third (35.3%) didn’t receive any formal education and 28% were unemployed. Nearly half (47%) had diabetes mellitus, 45.1% were alcoholics, 39.3% were smokers, and 36% underweight. The mean (SD) daily intake of energy was 1414.33 (458.45) kcal and the median (Interquartile Range) of protein was 43.15 (30.00-60.26) gms. The daily energy and protein intake were lower than the national guidelines for RDA. The intake of micronutrients was found to be much lower than recommended. The intake of macronutrients and selected micronutrients in TB patients were grossly inadequate. Along with vitamin supplementation, dietary counseling also is needed in this population. The emergence of the COVID -19 pandemic had a severe impact on people from all walks of life. The rapid spread of the disease in almost all parts of the country resulted in people having to stay at home, becoming socially distant, and cities being closed, creating enormous health, economic, environmental, and social challenges for the entire population. The aim of this study was to examine how these preventive measures affected the mental, physical, and nutritional health of the Indian population. A cross-sectional web-based study was conducted on the Indian population to assess the impact of COVID -19 on mental health, and changes in daily lifestyle such as diet, physical activity, and sleep patterns using a validated questionnaire. Data were collected between August 15, 2020, and October 15, 2020, using the Google Form platform. A total of 772 participants (394 men and 378 women) completed the study. The median age of the participants in the study was 32 years and the majority of the participants belonged to the age group of 21–30 years. Out of 772 participants, 286 participants (37%) had no change in their dietary intake. And 384 participants (49.70%) increased their dietary intake. There was a significant association seen between dietary intake and change in BMI (p <0.001). There was a significant change observed in the sleeping pattern when compared pre and during the covid phase (p <0.001). We conclude that there were few positive and negative impacts of covid-19 on the dietary pattern, mental health, and physical activity. These observations have potential implications that could help to identify the possible factors for change in the dietary, mental and physical behavior and impede through proper counseling.
