Smart glasses have lately been under the spotlight for a variety of technical and usability reasons. Despite the current (early 2015) freeze of Google Glass sales, the area is active with other big companies involved in the development of smart glass devices-at the same time remains in early stages and fragmented. We undertake a technical study of these devices in order to identify trends and provide a classification to be used as a technical reference by application designers and developers. Our criteria are technical and range from the existence of an SDK to network connectivity and types of sensors.

In a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) constructed of mobile terminals, instability of communication and energy consumption are often a problem. Topology control of the network by transmission power has been investigated to stabilize the communication in a dense environment and to reduce energy consumption. However, the singly-linked nodes generated by topology control may cause the routing packets to collide. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new topology control that maintains the doubly-linked nodes by controlling not only the transmission power but also the threshold of energy detection based on the number of adjacent nodes (node degree). In addition, in order to minimize electric wave interference and the time required to control the topology, the proposed method controls the average degree to within a range, rather than to a single point. Our topology control suppresses electric wave interference, stabilizes communication, and conserves electrical power in the nodes. Simulation under mobile environments revealed that the proposed method increases the packet delivery ratio and decreases power consumption.

There are a lot of information and communication technology (ICT) tools for education, but the motivation to use those varies from teacher to teacher. In this paper we present results of an international survey on teachers' use of ICT tools in education. The purpose of the survey was to find out what motivates teachers to use ICT tools in the context of teaching. The survey also intended to reveal which tools are used as well as the needs and requirements that are not covered by the existing tools. Most of the 45 respondents suggested that the integration of tools depends on how well they fit into the learning and teaching process and how easy it is to integrate them. The first category of indicated influencing factors comprises human factors like the teachers' skills, attitudes and opinions towards the tools. The second category is about intrinsic values including teachers' satisfaction, level of interest, joy and entertainment. The third category of influencing factors consists of user requirements towards ICT tools such as usability, level of interactivity, adaptability and meeting learning requirements. There are also issues related to limited teacher-student interaction. This study suggests that teachers should be more involved in designing ICT tools for education. It is also indicated that gamified ICT tools could be promising to enhance the intrinsic motivation for teaching and learning processes.

A new approach is introduced to obtain the reliability function of time-dependent system by using reliable node and reliable path concept in mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). It is known that all nodes of the MANET are not functional at all the time. Upon the failure of any node in the active path of the network, the system switches to the next path and correspondingly the connection between the source and the destination is established. Here, reliable node model is used to evaluate the performance and reliability of MANET. The model is simulated using NetSim software and performance analysis is carried out. The efficiency of the proposed protocol has been evaluated on different scenarios and there has been a noticeable improvement in the throughput and also in the reduction of end-to-end delay.

The resolution performances of remote sensing satellites are increasing, while allowed band frequencies for data transmission are fixed as a design recommendation. The satellite-to-ground station link became the bottleneck and there is an increased demand to overcome that limit. Also it is important to take into account the propagation conditions and onboard hardware limitations. This paper presents a new modulation scheme for a high-speed communication system with a high spectral efficiency (up to 11.4375 bit/s/Hz) with signal-to-noise ratio's distance to Shannon's boundary <;1.1 dB and simple modulation/demodulation principles.

This paper focuses on design & construction of a prototype of an open computing platform with dynamic configurable system architecture interfaced sensors for analysis of physiological signals related to children with special needs with converged & collective application. It is one of a major component block for an inclusive holistic platform for a ubiquitous computing for management and analysis system assisted with machine intelligence. The implementation is based upon general purpose non specialized of-the-self component, hardware, solutions, framework & software. The system autonomously uploads the collected bio-feedback signals to a central node for further analysis, preservation and extended remote support.

In this paper, we study how an insider such as, the administrator of a cloud service provider, can compromise guest machines in a IaaS cloud structure in order to obtain data from the guests and even achieve code execution. Moreover, we present results obtained by the implementation of such attacks. In general, our results show that cloud infrastructures are susceptible to various types of attacks. Therefore, the choice of a trustworthy service provider is paramount when using public cloud infrastructures.

Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) for secondary usage of underutilized radio spectrum is currently of great interest for radio regulatory authorities and for cellular network operators. However, the co-existence of multiple devices operating in the same bands, such as wireless microphones which also operate in TV bands, poses a challenge to DSA. Efficient and proactive spectrum sensing could prevent harmful interference between collocated devices, but existing blind spectrum sensing schemes such as energy detection and schemes based on Random Matrix Theory (RMT) have performance limitations. We propose a new blind spectrum sensing scheme for cognitive radio. The proposed scheme uses a new formula for the estimation of noise variance. The scheme has been evaluated through extensive simulations on wireless microphone signals and shows higher performance as compared to energy detection and RMT-based sensing schemes such as MME and EME. It also shows higher performance in terms of probability of detection (Pd).

Finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters are extensively used due to their key role in various digital signal processing (DSP) applications. Several attempts have been made to develop hardware realization of FIR filters characterized by implementation complexity, precision and high speed. Field Programmable Gate Array is a reconfigurable realization of FIR filters. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are on the verge of revolutionizing digital signal processing. Many front-end digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as FFTs, FIR or IIR filters, are now most often realized by FPGAs. Modern FPGA families provide DSP arithmetic support with fast-carry chains that are used to implement multiply-accumulates (MACs) at high speed, with low overhead and low costs. In this paper, distributed arithmetic (DA) realization of FIR filter as serial and parallel are discussed in terms of hardware cost and resource utilization.
