This paper presents special issues and key challenges of protocols and network architectures for mobile robotics networks. The features of the physical layer are considered as well as their impact on performance, scalability and robustness of the network. Data link issues are examined, such as multiple access methods in respect to group control strategies applied to mobile group robotics. A potential performance gain of using code division in decentralized robotics architectures is discussed. Approaches to routing metrics calculation considering mobile network features are also reviewed. The main principles of mobile robotics network design on lower OSI layers are explained.

The paper discusses the design principles of configurable control systems for electric drive instructional laboratories. Adopting this approach a control structure is assembled at software level using a number of control elements and compiled into control algorithm of a real-time DSP board. To ensure comprehensive and safe test execution, all control elements operate under the supervision of a real-time system core providing protections of the motor and power converter. The improvement in reliability of hardware operation allows for an increased rate regarding power of the motors and power converters used for laboratory works. The paper also considers the requirements for configurable control systems and describes the compilation procedure including an example of code generated for nested loop field weakening control system.

This publication presents a novel concept to provide and use services in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connected Machine-To-Machine (M2M) network. Based on the successful implementation in Smart Grid application field, the concept became more generalised and now it is part of M2M application fields of 2nd and 3rd generation. The concept provides an overall solution for information exchange, extended by community mechanism, for convenient networking of peers to use and provide optimised services. Inside an M2M community, the peers can operate as a single peer or operate as a cluster of peers to provide and use the services.

Altered states of consciousness (ASC) can be represented in video games through appropriate use of sound and computer graphics. Our research seeks to establish systematic methods for simulating ASC using computer sound and graphics, to improve the realism of ASC representations in video game engines. Quake Delirium is a prototype `ASC Simulation' that we have created by modifying the video game Quake. Through automation of various graphical parameters that represent the conscious state of the game character, hallucinatory ASC are represented. While the initial version of Quake Delirium utilised a pre-determined automation path to produce these changes, we propose that immersion may be improved by providing the user with a `passive' method of control, using a brain-computer interface (BCI). In this initial trial, we explore the use of a consumer-grade electroencephalograph (EEG) headset for this purpose.

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology demonstrated the concept of strongly coupled magnetic resonance (SCMR) in 2007, which was able to transfer energy at mid-range with non-radioactive and high efficiency. Consequently, this signaled a renewed research interest on Wireless Power Transmission within greater scope. Particularly, long range wireless power transmission via microwave has been under close. This paper explores the principles of Microwave Power Transmission as well as the state of art of wireless power transmission. Most existing applications examined are within the short range and mid-range scope. Therefore the long distance transmission via microwave is explored more with special attention on critical areas of concern like biological factors, interference with existent system and atmosphere. Also, the attenuation effect of microwave energy is determined for 2.45GHz and 5.8GHz frequency range using some established environmental factors.

Due to the predicted scarcity of the fossil fuels and their adverse effects to the environment, currently renewable energy generation is a major focus of the power and energy sector. Wind energy is one of the potential and rapidly growing sources of green energy. This is particularly due to the cost of the wind energy production has reduced by a factor of more than five over the last two decades. Moreover, wind turbines can cover a wide range of power outputs from 50 W to 5 MW and beyond compared to other green energy sources. This study is aimed to model a horizontal axis wind power turbine theoretically and computationally. Initially, theoretical calculations were carried out by considering a few specific case studies with different power outputs. Then, the same case studies were considered for a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Theoretical results show that the modelled wind turbine reaches a power output of 4.4 MW. Moreover, the theoretically calculated thrust and torque show a good agreement with the values obtained from CFD with a deviation of 2.9% only which confirms the accuracy of results. Therefore, the findings of this work should be useful in investigating ways to improve the performance of horizontal axis wind turbines.

In recent years an emerging interest in cognitive networks has been identified, since it allows the use of licensed bandwidth by ordinary users. This functionality is embedded naturally in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET), therefore research into cognitive MANET is attractive. There are several popular tools used for research in the field of MANET, one of them is the NS-3 discrete-time simulator. However, NS-3 currently does not provide support for cognitive network modelling. The key technology for cognitive networks to become feasible is the spectrum sensing detection of licensed user activity. To simulate cognitive MANETs using NS-3 it is necessary to implement spectrum sensing techniques in a software model. There are many algorithms, proposed to achieve robust spectrum sensing, differentiated by their performance and accuracy. The most robust are the algorithms based on the detection of cyclostationary features through the estimation of the cyclic spectra of the signal. This paper describes algorithms for cyclic spectra estimation, and proposes the method of integrating these algorithms into the NS-3 simulator.

This paper introduces an optimization approach for association rule mining in the time-memory domain. The approach splits the running mode of the traditional data mining algorithm into two phases. The first phase is designed to calculate all item sets in every transaction together with their frequencies (without pruning) and indexes their accumulation in a database. This procedure needs the fetch cycle of each transaction only once which reduces fetching transactions' I/O reasonably. In the second phase, the item sets and their frequencies are used in rule producing. a new algorithm has been designed, implemented, coded, verified and tested on real data. The approach enables users to change their queries and criteria using the second phase only which reduces the cost effectively.

The method of increasing the fault-tolerance of Control Unit is proposed. The main idea is to successively “contract” all values of output signals of Control Unit and to obtain final signature of convolution. It is proposed to implement the operation of division by the root polynomial (G(x) in binary Galois Field (GF)) as the convolution operation.

The spread of many infectious diseases recently has necessitated the need to monitor them. Therefore, we present an idea for developing an web-based analysis system that will be able to regularly collect news reports from Arabic newspaper websites, and then be able to extract information relating to disease outbreaks, e.g. disease name, date and location. Also, the system will be able to deposit the extracted data in an online database in order to enable users to access them.
