A novel multi-standard dual-wide band filter with a compact size of only 8.8 mm by 16.8mm is designed and developed for transceiver devices. The proposed filter has a fundamental bandwidth of 1.6GHz with fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 29.7% centered at the 5.4GHz band, and second bandwidth of 300.0MHz with FBW of 3.6% centered at the 8.15GHz band. The basic dual-wide bandwidth is attributed to the interaction of the novel modified polygon pair and upper stub loaded stepped impedance resonator. Moreover, the added down stub loaded stepped impedance resonator (SLSIR) further enhances the pass band performance by widening the bandwidth and optimizing reflection coefficient performance considerably. To validate the proposed ideas, the multi-standard filter is designed and simulated by Ansoft HFSS software. The simulated results agree well with the theory predictions. The featured broad bandwidths over two frequency bands and the miniaturized size of the proposed filter make it very promising for applications in future multi-standard wireless communication.

The architecture of one-dimensional median filter was developed, which allows increasing the length of the aperture by adding modules of the single-type and calculating the median on each step of filter operation. Synthesizable Verilog-description of the proposed architecture was obtained.

A double planar monopole antennas for WLAN and WiMAX application is proposed. Each antenna is represented in the form of crescent-shaped monopole structure. The lengths of the two arcs are designed to resonate at 2.45GHz, and 3.5GHz to meet the requirements for the WLAN and WiMAX standards respectively. The two monopoles have a small separation distance of 9mm (i.e., 0.0735λ0 at 2.45GHz). A new technique is proposed for the reduction of the mutual coupling between two closely-spaced antennas by etching a slot in each of the feed lines of two the antennas. The slots are folded to the shape of the letter S to conserve length of the feedlines. In each antenna, the slot is tuned to resonate at the operating frequency of the other antenna so that the other frequency is notched out. The antenna performance was investigated by simulation using CST Microwave Studio software. The results show that the proposed method has reduced the envelope correlation coefficient by 35 folds at the 2.45 GHz, and 21 folds at the 3.5GHz frequency bands. Measured S-parameters verified the simulated results.

Gun violence and in particular police shootings have become prominent in the news media in the United. States. However, there is currently no national database of police incidents. This paper describes the first phase of a project to develop a database to collect, edit, query and analyze police shootings. The SHOT Project (Statistics Help Officer Tactics), an academic collaboration between Criminal Justice and Information Technology departments, has developed a protocol for collecting data from open sources using content analysis. The database will enable the research community and law enforcement the ability to study the dynamics of shooting incidents, the ability to analyze this information and be better prepared to understand trends and patterns. The second phase of the project will be GIS Visualization and an Internet-based enterprise system for update, query and analysis.

The behavior composition problem consists in the synthesis of a controller that coordinates a set of available behaviors with the aim of realizing a desired target behavior. This problem suffers from a serious drawback because, for many instances, the target behavior cannot be achieved. In that case, the user is responsible for bringing changes until the problem becomes solvable. This inherent limitation is due to the fact that an exact match is required between the actions initiated by the user and those offered by the available behaviors. The main question is, how can a controller select a suitable behavior such that the functionality of one of its available actions is close to that currently requested by the desired target behavior? This paper provides an answer to this question by associating semantics to actions based on expectations and exploiting a semantic similarity function between actions. Similar actions that have different names, but comparable tasks, are considered equivalent. This renders the behavior composition framework more flexible so that it can fit with semantic environments.

The reference context in which companies operate is often characterized by a high level of complexity. Any attempt aimed to represent such complexity can be facilitated by referring to appropriate semantic knowledge bases, able to structure the domain concepts along with the relationships between them. Such consideration can be particularly applied to the Model-Driven designing phases of a software system, and especially within the User eXperience - UX - modelling process. In effect, the UX modelling is becoming more and more dominant, even with the advent of Rich Internet Applications - RIAs. They represent particular web applications that are capable to provide features and functionalities of traditional desktop applications. This paper introduces a Knowledge-Driven framework for the UX engineering process based on the interaction with a domain knowledge base, along with a prototype generator. Such framework is obtained by extending and by adapting an existing one, the IDM Editor, which performs the UX reengineering of a legacy application, using the methodology Interactive Dialogue Model - IDM.

In the UK, periodic assessment of research in universities has taken place since 1986. The most recent took place during 2014 with the results being published at the end of the year. This evaluation is concerned with art and design though all disciplines were included in the assessment. The method used for assessing research quality is outlined and the results summarised. The lessons drawn from the evaluation by REF2014 are detailed. A number of issues are identified and discussed. These include the staff selected for submission, the method of evaluation, and a cost-benefit analysis of the process.

The most important component of a closed-loop industrial control system is the communication unit located between a digital controller and the object being controlled. A pulse converter is usually used for this purpose in systems operating under pulse width modulation. However the dynamic characteristics of the converter bring a significant impact on the quality of the system regulation. This article discusses the design and implementation a closed-loop digital automatic control system for a zero-current switching quasi-resonant boost converter. It enables a high-speed transient process of the controlled object voltage having the advantages provided by pulse methods of electrical energy conversion. This paper also presents the simulation and experimental verification of the proposed approach.

A crescent-shaped planar monopole antenna for UWB applications is proposed. The design parameters were investigated using CST software package. Modeling of the UWB monopole antennas is investigated using two methods. The input impedance is represented by the first Foster canonical form, where the equivalent circuit components at resonance are derived from either the reflection coefficient or the input impedance responses of the investigated antenna. In the second method, a SPICE-compatible equivalent circuit is used to model the input admittance of the antenna utilizing the vector fitting technique. The CST Microwave Studio is used to obtain the reflection coefficient and input impedance of the investigated antenna, and these results are used to extract values of the components of the equivalent circuit. The performances of the investigated methods are compared, and validity of the modeling methods is verified using MATLAB and ADS softwares.
