Covid-19 catastrophe: Internet based learning and safety among foundation students of Universiti Utara Malaysia 新冠肺炎灾难:马来西亚乌塔拉大学基础学生的互联网学习和安全

In student-centered learning, UUM Foundation students (FS) must take a more active role in building knowledge. The goal of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of internet-based learning for UUM FS students during the Covid-19 disaster, as well as the ways in which students protect themselves when using the internet. University students have been obliged to go online due to the COVID-19 disaster and the introduction of Movement Control Order (MCO). During the COVID-19 tragedy, there were a number of hurdles that impacted the effectiveness of internet-based learning, including internet connectivity and budgetary difficulties. At this point, even student safety is crucial. The effectiveness of internet-based learning and safety among UUM FS are investigated in this study using a descriptive-normative approach. Physical data collection could not be done due to MCO. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to choose 130 pupils from a group of 200. In addition, Google Meet and WhatsApp were used to conduct interviews to obtain replies to questions about internet-based learning and safety. In comparison to before Covid-19, 119 percent of respondents (92 percent) spent more than 4 hours per day. During the Covid-19 disaster, 48 percent or 62 FS preferred Zoom app for internet-based learning, and 56 percent of FS evaluated themselves as having the highest level of safety. In an interview, FS stated that internet-based learning has numerous advantages, including the ability to submit assignments via the e-learning UUM portal, which he considers to be one of the best. FS are also less likely to become infected because they do not have to interact with other people. The study's findings revealed that internet-based learning is quite successful, according to FS. Students' safety is also ensured because they are not needed to leave their homes or places of residence in order to complete their studies. UUM FS must survive, be self-sufficient, and adjust to the changes despite the COVID-19 disaster. © 2021 Cognizance Research Associates - Published by JLLS.

Variations of impolite responses in YouTube podcast videos YouTube播客视频中各种不礼貌的回应

This research looks at how speech partners react to language impoliteness in five YouTube podcast videos. The research data in a descriptive qualitative framework are authentic or natural in the form of spoken conversations between presenters and guest stars that include impoliteness responses. The five titles of Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube podcast videos served as the data source. The research method consists of note-taking and orthographic transcription, both of which employ a free-competence technique. The method of data analysis used was pragmatic and contextual matching. The research's findings reveal three types of responses from speech partners when confronted with language impoliteness. There are several representative variations in each of the response categories. The basis of distinguishing elements is primarily concerned with variations. Offensive countering is a response variation in which the speaker responds with curses as an expression of annoyance, ignores, or dismisses the speech partner. Defensive countering defines one's position in interactions by considering innocence, seeing oneself as distinct from others (more important than others), and demonstrating an action that places oneself in a safe situation. Face attack response attempts to accept impolite acts, confirm the speech partner's accusations, and work out solutions with the speech partner.

Swales’ (1990) Creating a Research Space (CARS) model has spawned a large number of studies focusing on investigations of research article introductions (RAIs), and the reports have given meaningful contributions to guide novice and non-native authors in writing English RAIs. However, the investigation of authors’ research gap strategies in RAIs has so far received little attention. Also, the previous investigations do not account for the way such strategies are applied across the Scopus journal quartiles (i.e., Q1, Q2, Q3, & Q4). Therefore, this study is undertaken to investigate the research gap strategies used by authors who published their research articles (RAs) in Scopus-indexed journals. The strategies found were, then, compared seen from the Scopus journal quartile lens. Forty RAs from eight Scopus-indexed journals in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) were randomly collected and analyzed using Swales’ (1990) framework, taking into account the insights proposed by Lim (2012) and Kwan, Chan, and Lam (2012). The findings reveal that the authors use five research gap strategies to present their research gaps in their ELT RAIs. The comparative analysis shows that there are differences and similarities in using research gap strategies across the quartiles. The findings of this study can assist non-native and novice authors to achieve visibility worldwide by giving closer attention to how to present research gaps using several research gap strategies in RAIs.

In this research, the researcher adopts a practical and the theoretical parts. First, is the practical part, it consists of the problem, the aim, the hypothesis, the procedures and the limits of the study. These will be in the first part. In part two which is the theoretical part, the researcher indicates two main types of researches which are quantitative and qualitative research. Then the research is dedicated to the description of methodology, the results and finally the conclusion. The study aims first to clarify the quantitative and qualitative researches and second to investigate the performance of Iraqi EFL researchers in writing quantitative and qualitative researches. The main tool that is used in this research is the questionnaire which was included personal information such as (bachelor of education) and teachers (master and doctorate) and different questions about quantitative or qualitative researches. It combined (30) participants, (20) as fourth stage researchers, and (10) for lecturer, it was designed to measure which of the researchers has knowledge about the two types of researches, and how can they distinguish between each one, what are the main different points between quantitative and qualitative research. We can see the results from their answers when we analyze the questionnaire.

The effect of microteaching technique of Iraqi EFL student teachers on their teaching performance and attitudes 微格教学技术对伊拉克英语实习教师教学绩效和教学态度的影响

Microteaching is a significant strategy in teacher education programs for giving student teachers opportunities to practice their teaching techniques.This study aims at investigating how using microteaching affects the teaching performance and attitude of Iraqi EFL student teachers. For this purpose, 30 Iraqi EFL student teachers were selected and then randomly assigned to two groups:control and experimental, 15 in each. To collect the data of the study, two instruments were used. The first one is a checklist used to measure student teachers' teaching performance; while the other is a questionnaire used to measure their attitudes toward microteaching. The study hypotheses state that the learners' mean scores in the post-administration of teaching performance checklist and microteaching attitude questionnaire for the two groups were not significantly different. The findings revealed that performance of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group and that using the microteaching method was more rewarding than the traditional tutoring. Furthermore, microteaching as a training method was also viewed favorably by the participants in the experimental group.

Polysemantic allusion in a polycultural dimension: definition, structure and semantics (based on Pratchett’s Discworld) 多元文化维度下的多义典喻:定义、结构与语义(基于普拉切特的《碟形世界》)

The paper introduces the notion of polysemantic allusion in a polycultural dimension, explored in its semantic, structural and functional facets, based on intertextual contextual interpretative, structural, taxonomic, archetypal analyses added by some inferential pragmatics tools. Polysemantic allusion (PA) is defined as an intertextuality device, which combines two and more facultatively decoded meanings due to their association with more than one precedent source situations, texts or phenomena. The markers of PA include the modified and altered precedential names, designating the literary text or extra-textual sphere of denotation, symbolic or archetypal references of precedential situation or text; a science-associated terms or their structural part, which must satisfy the ambiguity and optional decoding of the precedential sources triggered by the PA. The markers of polysemantic allusion may be one, twoand multicomponent with each structural part capable of creating additional allusive connotations in its unfolding in further context. PA involves several levels of semantic interpretation, which correlate with various precedent texts and differ in degrees of implicitness of the allusive meanings, interpreted with an attraction of the optimally relevant context, implicating, strengthening, confirming or contradicting the hypothetic allusive assumptions. Semantic components of PA may encompass hypertextual references providing coherent relations between Pratchett’s novels, and architextual meanings associated with parodying various genres.

Teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic: Teachers' perspectives 2019冠状病毒病大流行期间的在线教学:教师的视角

The current study aimed to explore EFL instructors' perceptions toward online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, with special emphasis on the challenges they faced, and the advantages and disadvantages of this mode of education. The participants in this study were 43 EFL faculty members from the Departments of English at Qassim University in Saudi Arabia. Data for this research were collected by distributing a semi-structured survey designed by the researcher. The results showed that the top advantage of distance teaching was normally protection from the illness. Distance teaching also provided the opportunity to experiment with alternative teaching methods, tools, and assessments. Further, teachers felt exempted from some of the burdens associated with in-person teaching and were allowed to focus on the core role of their profession. Despite these benefits, the participants revealed that e-teaching cannot easily replace traditional education. All in all, the participants reported that e-teaching has advantages for professors, but this is not necessarily the case for students. Implications of these findings are provided, such as training teachers to deal with e-teaching mediums efficiently, keep pace with sudden adjustments, and create monitoring measures to ensure that instructors do not become complacent. © 2021 Cognizance Research Associates - Published by JLLS.
