Mandarin adaptations of voiced alveolar fricative [z] in English loanwords 英语外来词中元音擦音[z]的普通话适应

This paper explores the adaptation of English voiced fricative [z]E into Mandarin. The principal findings are that the adaptation of [z]E depends on its position in the source word. If [z]E occupies the word initial or middle position, it tends to be borrowed as Mandarin [ts]M or [s]M. If [z]E is in the ending position, more variations would be observed as it may correspond to [ts]M, [s]M, [ʈʂ]M or [ʂ]M. Moreover, adapting [z]E into Mandarin is also heavily influenced by the orthography. The English [z]E can be spelled with or . The letters of and are also listed in Mandarin Pinyin, a Romanization system that transcribes the sounds of Chinese characters using Roman alphabets. Specifically, is pronounced as [s]M, while [z] is pronounced as [ts]M. It turns out that [s]M sounds different from [z]E, while [ts]M is perceptually similar to [z]E. Generally, there emerged two major adaptation patterns, that is, [z]E  [ts]M and [z]E  [s]M. The latter is based on the spelling similarity, rather than perceptual similarity. It is therefore concluded that the loanword adaptation is not only determined by the speech perception, phonology and legitimacy of sound structures, but also systematically interfered with the orthography, that is, the source-loan spelling similarity.

The search for national identity in the discourse analysis of YouTube comments YouTube评论话语分析中的民族认同探索

YouTube is a popular social media site that provides the users a space to view, upload video clips or log in and write comments. Even though many of the YouTube users remain anonymous when commenting, their language use in the comments can reflect the identity of a particular community. Therefore, a variety of computermediated discourse can be obtained from YouTube in deciphering a specific community or a country’s identity. This qualitative study is keen to investigate the representation of the Malaysian identity in the YouTube comments. Analysis were performed on the YouTube comments of Malaysian-related YouTube videos uploaded by famous Malaysian YouTubers. Textual analysis and coding of the YouTube comments were carried out using the NVivo software based on Herring’s (2004) Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) and Braun & Clarke’s (2006) Thematic Analysis framework. Findings showed that there were various themes that were repeated in the YouTube comments discourse which is a representation of the Malaysian identities, namely feelings of love towards the country, Malaysian cuisine, language mix, being multiracial, Malaysian behaviours or stereotypes, and the birth country Malaysia. These results provide insights into the discourse that are associated with Malaysian identities and contributed knowledge to fill in the gap in literature regarding national identity in social media, particularly Malaysia.

A Bibliometric review of research on oral traditions: An overview of over 100 years of studies 口述传统研究的文献计量学综述:100多年研究综述

Oral tradition refers to the dissemination of cultural materials through oral or oral discourse. Elements like history, literature, and other cultural heritage are transmitted across generations. However, limited scholarly attention has been devoted to mapping the overview of this research area. Thus, this study addresses the shortcoming by mapping the current trend of the study on oral tradition. The data extracted from Scopus database has been analysed using bibliometric analysis. The search using keywords related to oral tradition has extracted about 486 documents over 100 years for publication analysis. The research productivity is reported together along with document and source type, language, country/region, active institution publishing, author, subject area, keyword and publication distribution of citation analysis. The data of 132 years has shown an increament of development rate of literature on the oral tradition from 1888 until 2020. The results show that various studies have been conducted in this research area related to the collaboration of multi-authors. The published articles are using several different languages however the published documents are mostly written in the English language. Among other languages used for publications, i.e., Spanish, French, and Turkish. Our findings provide significant input on the trend of oral traditions research across the globe.

ARabic-Kafa: Design and development of educational material for arabic vocabulary with augmented reality technology 阿拉伯- kafa:设计和发展教育材料的阿拉伯语词汇与增强现实技术

This research focuses on the production and creation of educational materials for Arabic vocabulary learning using Augmented Reality Technology, namely ARabic-Kafa, which can support both teachers and students. The Marker Based Tracking tool is used in this Augmented Reality application. This method was employed because it can read objects and then display 3-dimensional (3D) virtual objects. The first step in resolving this issue is to create animations through the blender application, choose the image to be utilised as a Marker, and finally, export it to Vuforia to form an Augmented Reality app. The mobile app of Augmented Reality-based educational media is the product of this research. A series of testing were employed and a minimum distance for displaying a 3D object is 10 cm, and the minimum angle 30° to 90° to view 3D objects. The rotation marker's output effectively shows every aspect of the 3D object. Furthermore, the audio pronunciations can be played effortlessly.

Using Hallidayan systemic functional linguistic approach to analyse the linguistic gyration of royal speeches in Ghana 运用哈利达扬系统功能语言学方法分析加纳王室讲话的语言循环

This paper investigates the relationship that exists in the linguistic gyration of the annual speeches delivered by Otumfo Osei Tutu and Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin, who are both paramount Ghanaian royal chiefs of the Ashanti Kingdom and the Akyem Abuakwa Kingdom respectively. Although these prominent chiefs have delivered several speeches on several times and occasions and at different places and settings, this study paid particular attention to and selected only speeches that they delivered in academic environments, specifically, in universities in Ghana. These annual speeches used for the study were therefore those that were delivered at the University of Professional Studies and University of Education, Winneba campuses respectively. The analysis of the data was done based on the Hallidayan’s Systemic Functional Linguistic approach. The analysis reveals the incorporation of the ideology and power in the language of the royal speeches of the two paramount chiefs in Ghana and its influence on the university administrations and communities. Subsequently, the modality metafunction showed that the chiefs selected modal verbs to affirm and fulfill the tasks given them. From the data, it is evident that the traditional rulers can use language to communicate their strength, capabilities on the political administration and education spheres on the university communities.

Although these prominent chiefs have delivered several speeches on several times and occasions and at different places and settings, this study paid particular attention to and selected only speeches that they delivered in academic environments, specifically, in universities in Ghana. These annual speeches used for the study were therefore those that were delivered at the University of Professional Studies and University of Education, Winneba campuses respectively. The analysis of the data was done based on the Hallidayan’s Systemic Functional Linguistic approach. The analysis reveals the incorporation of the ideology and power in the language of the royal speeches of the two paramount chiefs in Ghana and its influence on the university administrations and communities. Subsequently, the modality metafunction showed that the chiefs selected modal verbs to affirm and fulfill the tasks given them.
