Background: This study investigates the sources of stress and mental well-being based on the experiences and sense-making process of a group of COVID-19 survivors in South Korea. Currently, only a few studies have focused on the stress and mental and psychological well-being of COVID-19 survivors, particularly in undergraduate male university students in the East Asian region. Based on social stigma theory, this study was guided by the following research question: How would undergraduate male university students express and describe their sources of stress that may impact the mental and psychological well-being of COVID-19 survivors, particularly in the case of South Korea? Methods: Interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed. Two in-depth interview sessions, one focus group activity, and one member-checking interview session via the Zoom app were employed to collect lived experiences from eight COVID-19 survivors who are traditional-age (i.e., 18-25 years old) university students at South Korean universities. Results: Three themes were categorised: (1) Religious Practices and Churchgoers, (2) University Matters and Personnel, and (3) Challenges from Relatives, Neighbours, and Friends. All participants argued that their gender roles, behaviours, the individuals around them and their environment offer different sources of stress, which influence their mental health and well-being as COVID-19 survivors. Although they had already been discharged from hospital and were categorised as healthy people, the government and general public continued to offer pressure. Conclusions: The results of this study illustrated the issues of sources of stress and mental and psychological well-being of COVID-19 survivors, particularly in South Korea. Although the participants had recovered from the illness caused by COVID-19, they continued to face stress, challenges, and problems from the individuals around them and their environment. The results of this study may fill the gaps about the experiences between male university undergraduate students as COVID-19 survivors in South Korea.

Background: Mental health issues can be more severe in men vulnerable to isolation and loneliness during a pandemic because of social distancing and isolation measures. The purpose of this study was to identify current research trends and the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on men's mental health through a scoping review, and to make recommendations for improvements. Methods: This study conducted a scoping review to explore and analyze research trends on the effect of COVID-19 on men's mental health during the period January 2020 to October 2021. The PubMed and CINAHL databases, as well as Google Scholar, were used to identify relevant studies. The two researchers individually reviewed the studies, and all references were reviewed to determine the final sample of included studies. Results: A total of 27 studies were included in the analysis. Of all the studies, 14 were descriptive, one was quasi-experimental, and six were qualitative. Remaining studies included four commentaries, one case study, and one review. COVID-19 was found to impact the following areas of men's mental health at the individual level: psychological distress, addictive behaviors, sleep, well-being, cognitive function, and coping. At the interpersonal level, family outcomes, community belonging, and violence were impacted. At the social level, masculinity, inequity, and social service changes were affected. Intervention strategies for men's mental health during COVID-19 recommended by these studies were also divided into three levels (individual, interpersonal, and social level). Conclusions: Efforts should be made to improve mental health services for men who may experience anxiety, depression, and anger, along with the physical health concerns of the COVID-19 era.

Background : Currently, there are two methods for testing maximal oxygen uptake: the direct and indirect methods, but both have certain requirements for testing equipment, site, and personnel. There is a lack of a convenient and effective method for testing maximum oxygen uptake (VO 2 max). With the development of artificial neural network (ANN), a solution to this gap is provided. Objective : The goal of this study was to design a method to evaluate the cardiopulmonary function of young people and verify its feasibility and reliability. Methods : The incremental squat test (IST) and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) test were designed with 196 subjects (97 males and 99 females). The back propagation (BP) neural network was used to construct the model of VO 2 max by recording and analyzing squatting times, height, weight, gender, age, leg length, Manou Riers Skelic index (MRSI), and VO 2 max. Results : Three hidden layers and 65 nodes were employed in the BP neural network. Each hidden layer contained 19 nodes. Other parameters of this network were 0.01, 0.9, and 2000 for the learning rate, momentum, and iterations, respectively. The difference between the measurements and predictions was not significant ( p > 0.05), and the correlation between them was extremely strong (r = 0.98, p < 0.01). Conclusions : We conclude that the model constructed using the BP neural network is accurate, and the IST is feasible for predicting VO 2 max. This method can be used as a substitute for other cardiopulmonary fitness test protocols in cases of insufficient venues and equipment. thereby preventing health complications. In subsequent studies, the sample size should be expanded, and separate prediction models should be developed for different genders.

Background : Our goal was to show how the interpretation of the IIEF-5 questionnaire can lead to a significantly different outcome and propose a modification of the possible responses of the IIEF-5 questionnaire to assess erectile function after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Methods : The results of patients treated with TURP in a randomized clinical trial were analyzed under four scenarios characterized by what patients to include and how to codify the answers for statistical interpretation: scenario (A) only patients who reported sexual intercourse; scenario (B) all patients, recording zero response for patients without sexual activity as one more grade of the scoring scale; scenario (C) same as B but coding 0 as “99” (missing value); and scenario (D) all patients are included, but the zero response remains as 0 for patients who reported not having had sexual intercourse due to the “Inability to penetrate (enter) the partner due to penile flaccidity”, whereas zero response is coded as “99” in those patients reporting “Inability to penetrate (enter) the partner due to other causes”. Results : Eighty-four patients qualified for the analysis. The proportion of patients in each ED category was very similar among the four scenarios, except for the “Severe ED” category. At baseline, scenario B had 36.9% of patients categorized as “Severe ED”, scenario D 18.5%, and scenarios A and C 17.2% ( p < 0.01). This relative order remained constant in all postoperative visits. The differences in “Severe ED” rates were directly correlated with the inclusion of patients without sexual activity (higher “Severe ED” rate) and the codification of zero responses (when left as zero, they increase “Severe ED” rate, whereas when coded as 99 they are not included in the analysis and “Severe ED” rates decrease). Taking scenario D as a reference, we found a significant overestimation of “Severe ED” in scenario B up to 21.4% and a slight underestimation in scenarios A and B up to –15.7%. Conclusions : Using the IIEF-5 questionnaire with options 0 and 99 (scenario D) may improve the accuracy of detecting patients with “Severe ED” in the postoperative period of TURP. Clinical Trial Registration : NCT03936244 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03936244).

Background: Because the worldwide spread of coronavirus disease 2019 has forced a moratorium on student sports activity in Japan, reports on its impact on sports injuries are limited given its novelty. This study aimed to determine the characteristics and gender differences of injuries in adolescent athletes after returning to sport following restriction of club activities due to the coronavirus pandemic. Methods: An online retrospective questionnaire was distributed to 500 adolescent athletes who belong to school sports clubs in Japan from March 1–19, 2021. An anonymous questionnaire was created before and after the restriction of sports activities following the declaration of the first state of emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Subsequently, 258 valid responses were obtained, and injury-related characteristics were compared between injured and non-injured athletes after returning to sports and between genders for injured athletes. There were no differences in the body areas of sports injuries between males and females. Result: We found that injury experience before club activity restriction was significantly associated with injury after returning to sports (p < 0.001). Moreover, practice time increased before and after the restriction in the injury group (p = 0.038). The injury rate was higher in females (p < 0.024), and the trauma rate was higher among males (p = 0.016). There were no differences in the body areas of sports injuries between males and females. Conclusions: Our results provide gender-differentiated ideas and suggestions as they relate to injury prevention once in adolescent athletes returning to sports after the coronavirus disease 2019 induced restriction of club activities. We show the need for injury rehabilitation and practice time control in adolescent athletes in the coronavirus disease 2019 setting.

Background : The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between mood states and competitive state anxiety and perceived performance in Asian male baseball players from universities in choking under pressure situations during a game. An additional aim was to identify the mediating effect of competitive state anxiety on such relationships. Methods : A questionnaire was administered to 209 male baseball players from universities who wanted to enter a professional league. The mean age of study subjects was 20.25 years. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping analyses were used to test hypotheses and analyze the mediation effect. Results : First, among mood states, higher confusion and higher tension predicted higher competitive state anxiety. Second, mood states had no significant influence on perceived performance. Third, higher competitive state anxiety predicted lower perceived performance. Lastly, competitive state anxiety had a complete mediating effect on the relationship between mood states and perceived performance. Conclusions : To help athletes perform to the best of their ability, psychological interventions should be provided with a greater focus on reducing competitive state anxiety during a game. And we believe that an intervention program with a greater focus on competitive state anxiety can provide a more realistic and effective assistance scheme which will prevent a sudden decrement in performance

Background : Sexual harassment in the workplace is an important issue that leaders should always be striving to address, but the public’s focus has always been on harassment by male perpetrators against women. Sexual harassment experienced by male employees has been easily overlooked by the public. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the effects of sexual harassment perceived by male hotel employees and its effects on their individual mental, emotional, and work outcomes. Methods : In this study, a qualitative survey was administered to male hotel employees over 20 years old regarding their experiences with sexual harassment. The reliability and validity of variables were verified through regression, and confirmatory factor analyses on the derived attributes and variables verified in previous studies. Results : The male hotel staff in this study reported negative effects of verbal, physical, visual, and psychological sexual harassment on their self-rated mental health (SRMH), whereas high SRMH positively affected the organization by increasing organizational citizenship behavior and self-efficacy and lowering turnover intention. The negative emotional experience of sexual harassment at work increased emotional violation, decreased organizational citizenship behavior and self-efficacy, and increased turnover intention. Conclusions : The seriousness of sexual harassment against men in the workplace has easily been overlooked, however, the findings here confirm that it is a severe crime for both male and female victims and has serious adverse effects on both individuals and workplaces. Consequently, hotel owners, leaders, managers, and other stakeholders are urged to acknowledge rather than overlook male sexual harassment in the workplace and take appropriate measures to eliminate such emotional boundary violations as harassment.
