Not Taken Out of Context … Digitization of the ‘Goethe/Incoming Correspondence’ Collection in the Goethe and Schiller Archive: Preparation for Conservation and Restoration

ABSTRACT Preparation of the ‘Goethe/Incoming Correspondence’ collection for digitization presented unique challenges to the Goethe and Schiller Archive’s conservation workshop: in addition to coping with previously unexamined holdings under a tight deadline, a conservation concept also had to be developed quickly. This concept had to be tailored to the complex damage that the collection had sustained, but above all, it had to factor in its special historical significance and how it had been handed down. A concept was developed and implemented in close cooperation between the conservators and the Regestausgabe der Briefe an Goethe staff. (The Regestausgabe makes the entirety of the letters addressed to Goethe accessible in chronological order, provides information on their content, and places them in the context of Goethe's personal correspondence relations.) For letters hand-sewn into file folders, the current condition of the sewing was preserved for posterity, and loose letters were secured through conservation, whereby a colour code indicates the condition in which these letters were found.

ABSTRACT Chemical conversion of darkened lead white into white lead(II) sulfate with hydrogen peroxide (HP) may impact the surrounding paper, depending on treatment parameters. Side effects of historic conversion treatment are illustrated by a drawing by Abraham Bloemaert. Model papers rendered HP-sensitive by iron(II) sulfate impregnation and prepared with darkened lead white underwent conversion with HP in gas, gel or liquid form. Visual (VIS, magnification) and instrumental (single gas detection with Dräger X-am® 5100) analysis revealed that no application method was free of side effects and that HP gas emission continued for a considerable time after 3% HP application by brush.

ABSTRACT Photographs on canvas that have been coloured by oil paint carry a range of historical, technological, and artistic values. The objects needed an immediate conservation treatment because of their poor conservation conditions. The conservation treatments were carried out during the master’s project at the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Art, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Before conservation, two objects were carefully examined and analysed. The main part of the conservation work was to consolidate and infill the photographic and painting layers.

Testing Aquazol®. An Evaluation of its Suitability for the Conservation of Works on Paper 测试Aquazol®。
Pub Date : 2022-04-03 DOI: 10.1080/18680860.2022.2066388

ABSTRACT Aquazol® has several qualities that make it an interesting conservation material, but there are also some concerns, especially regarding its hygroscopicity and possible discolouration. Focussing on its use as a non-aqueous adhesive, this study investigates the interaction between the synthetic resin and paper to evaluate its suitability for paper conservation. Out of a variety of solvents, acetone and MEK were chosen to prepare Aquazol® solutions applied to various paper substrates. Testing included spectrophotometry, tensile strength and pH measurements before and after accelerated aging, and an assessment of reversibility and moisture uptake with the associated stickiness of the adhesive films. While there is no evidence that Aquazol® negatively affects the mechanical stability or pH of paper, a tendency towards yellowing and darkening was confirmed. Its hygroscopicity can become an issue in a non-controlled environment.

Pressure-sensitive Tape Removal in Paper Conservation: A Review
Pub Date : 2022-04-03 DOI: 10.1080/18680860.2022.2060000
Leonie Müller, U. Henniges, J. Schultz, Annine Wöllner, S. Zumbühl, I. Brückle
ABSTRACT The three treatment phases for pressure-sensitive tape removal included in this review are: removal of the carrier, adhesive removal from the paper surface, and adhesive removal from the paper interior. The latter process requires organic solvents. Solvent selection via the Teas chart or Zumbühl’s system are compared. Teas triangular chart supports the calculation of solvent mixtures with ideal mixing properties; Zumbühl’s bi-axial parametrization system supports solvent selection when solvent mixtures exhibit non-ideal behaviour and highlights vapour pressure as the solvent selection criterion. Strategies for working with solvents include a discussion of solvent mixtures and their application and the introduction of a suction disk design. Effects and common side effects of treatment are presented with examples. This review supports novices and practitioners in their treatment choices when dealing with the removal of pressure-sensitive tapes.
