ABSTRACT In 2017, the Folger Shakespeare Library received a large collection of posters for which a housing solution was needed. It was vital that the new housing would allow ready access and easy handling for library staff and researchers, while also protecting the poster edges and glossy surfaces from any damage. In addition, the new housing would ideally be constructed efficiently with regards to both time and cost restraints. This article describes how the Folger conservators discovered an innovative solution through trial and error and creative thinking.

ABSTRACT A copy of the 1786 edition of Ephraim Chambers’ Cylopaedia was researched and analyzed, developing an informed treatment plan. Imaging techniques and scientific analysis were used to identify materials, revealing details about the original binding structure and later repairs using manuscript waste and textile fragments. Treatment included extensive paper repair to all three volumes and the two gatherings of plates, and strengthening the abbreviated sewing structures with new sewing and spine linings. This complex treatment also involved parchment toning for rebacking material, stabilizing the previous textile repair, and replacing a missing board.

ABSTRACT Facings have a long history in the treatment of East Asian paintings on silk or paper to protect the surface of the painting during remounting. Materials and methods vary, but most facings involve the temporary attachment of some type of paper to the surface of the work with water or a weak, water-soluble adhesive. Contemporary Japanese practices have developed a multi-layered facing process using rayon paper and Japanese kozo paper, adhered together with funori, a natural seaweed adhesive, and wheat starch paste. The resulting composite is designed to provide a balance of protection, support, flexibility and removability as well as to extend and control treatment time. Adapting this facing process can facilitate the treatment of works on paper that are too damaged to handle safely or treatments where staff are limited. Past cases describe the removal of drawings, and historic wallpaper from secondary supports or mounts using facings. As there is limited information on Japanese facings available in published literature, this article describes the materials and methods of the original process in detail and applies its use to the treatment of a severely damaged nineteenth-century American landscape plan.

ABSTRACT The Cologne Emergency Association of Archives and Libraries’ roll on/ off container represents an innovative approach to salvaging collections affected by disasters. Designed in close cooperation with the Cologne Fire Brigade, the container provides both workstations for documentation, cleaning and preparing for freezing along with storage for most required materials and equipment. This allows for on-site salvage and processing of objects to begin almost immediately in all weathers upon the delivery of the container. This article details the project’s background and conception, a description of the container’s features and its intended use. The final section covers the container’s first salvage operation in the town of Stolberg, Germany in the wake the terrible floods in summer 2021 and the future developments planned.

ABSTRACT The vacuum press is a technical adaption for paper conservation and evaluated on behalf of the height of pressure, functionality, and usefulness. In comparison to the toggle press it is an alternative. The handling is comfortable and space efficient. Although the drying of papers is possible and the parameters are adjustable, the pressure onto the papers is quite high. It might be useful for the drying process during leafcasting paper.

ABSTRACT Conservation education in Books and Paper at Camberwell College of Arts formally started in 1970, having grown out of a strong British tradition in bookbinding and typography dating as far back as 1904. This is the complete list of the Book and Paper MA degree works from 1992 to 2019, when the course was discontinued.
