ABSTRACT Globes are a part of a unique group of artefacts that combine utility and decorative functions. This multi-functionality typically results in the poor condition of such items as they are significantly affected by the physics of their very structure and the technique and technology of their manufacture. The following article recounts the conservation and restoration of a school globe from the 1920s, with particular emphasis on solutions to issues commonly seen with this kind of object. The main research focus is on ways to restore the object’s original shape. In addition, this paper deals with the registration and measurement of deformations (Structured Light Scanning). The presented solutions are all the more valuable as they can be applied to a broader group of objects with atypical geometry.

Pierre Bonnard’s Oil on Cardboard: A Comparative Study of Two Paintings at the Gothenburg Museum of Art

ABSTRACT In this study, two oil paintings on cardboard in the collection of Gothenburg Museum of Art, Nude and Model in Armchair by Pierre Bonnard, are investigated and compared. Both paintings were made around 1903–1905 during a significant time in Bonnard’s career, when his palette became brighter – moving towards a more colouristic expression. The paintings have both been on permanent display since their acquisition, but Nude shows a higher degree of discolouration and degradation while Model in Armchair appears more stable. This study aims to investigate the technique, condition, and degradation, employing analytical methods such as microscopy, and in-situ spectroscopic analysis (X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). Both palettes and two types of varnish were identified. An overpainted date was discovered on Nude and a painting on the verso was discovered on Model in Armchair. The composition of one of the varnishes may have compromised the condition of Nude.

Applications of Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) for Books and Objects on Paper

ABSTRACT Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a photography technique that documents object surface relief under varying illumination directions. This article presents the technique through a portable, automated RTI dome system, which allows for convenient photographing of objects in the collection and subsequent rendering of interactive, digital RTI images. The paper showcases the possible applications of RTI methods in documenting books and objects on paper. We discuss the applicability of RTI in four principal areas of interest: technology identification, object condition assessment, evaluation of conservation treatments, and dissemination of conservation work results. Each example is supported with RTI images recorded for objects from the collections of the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow, the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw and the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw.

How does a conference come together? It usually starts with the IADA board reaching out to colleagues in the community to find a location and venue. The goal is to find a venue which can easily be reached by train. Local volunteers serve on the so-called Local Organizing Committee. Without this team, nothing comes together. Once the board agrees to a city and venue, the Local Organizing Committee communicates with the venue, suggests local caterers, finds a venue for a reception, submits quotes to the IADA board and creates an attractive activity programme to take place after the days of presentation. The Programme Committee, usually comprising board members and JPC editors, sends out a call for papers about a year or more before the conference, collects the submitted abstracts and creates an engaging programme based on the selection of the proposed talks, which were peer-reviewed.

The Conservation of the Diocese of London Consistory Court of London Books: Different Approaches for Allowing Access to Archival Bindings

ABSTRACT Archival bindings are interesting yet challenging objects for conservators to treat. The definition of this kind of binding is broad but minor details, such as the use of tackets and different lacing methods to attach the cover to the textblock, make each binding distinctive. Although these bindings exhibit different structures, one of their most common types of deterioration is a pronounced concave spine. When it comes to repairing these bindings, it is important to keep these differences in mind, and therefore conservation treatments need to be developed for each individual item. At London Metropolitan Archives (London, UK), the Diocese of London Consistory Court records offer a great resource for studying this type of binding, and conservators need to find solutions to maintain the potential historical information that a binding feature can reveal. This gentle approach is sometimes challenged by the need to enable safe handling by users, which may require a more interventive measure. This article describes different conservation treatments on three similar archival bindings from the sixteenth century that aimed to fulfil these requirements. Treatment options were chosen to maintain the binding features and allow safe access. We will describe how different approaches have led to different outcomes.

ABSTRACT The South African artist Diane Victor explores soot as a medium, using candles to create magnificent artworks on paper, and more recently on stone and glass. The messy and dark soot created by cheap candle flame symbolizes the fragility dying lives and is mirrored in the vulnerability of the medium. As the presence of these delicate artworks is increased in collections, understanding their preservation concerns and needs is warranted. The author interviewed the artist to understand her creation process and the dilemma that lies in the inherent fragility of her soot artworks. Victor’s material choices and methods on all aspects of handling, storage, framing, and transportation were recorded. The ramifications of Victor’s choices are discussed and safer options from a preservation point of view are mentioned. Lastly, the interview reveals the artist’s understanding and thoughts on conservation and in particular remedial treatment of both paper and image.
