STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF COMPUTER-BASED LANGUAGE TEST (CBLT) AND VALIDATION OF CBLT-LISTENING QUESTIONNAIRE USING EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANALYSIS 学生对计算机语言测试的认知及计算机语言听力问卷的探索性因素分析验证

Background and Purpose: One of the difficulties that emerged during online learning was the teaching and learning of listening skills which prompted the development of an online platform, Computer-based Language Test (CBLT), to assist educators conduct listening practices and assessment with students without experiencing geographical limitations. As this is a novel platform, this paper intends to examine students’ perceptions of listening skills and online learning after utilising this platform using the developed CBLT-Listening Questionnaire.   Methodology: This cross-sectional quantitative study employed questionnaires to collect data from diploma students. Two-stage sampling was utilised whereby the first stage used stratified random sampling in selecting classes from twenty-three (23) branches of the university. Simple random sampling was practised in the second stage which yielded 410 responses. The data were subjected to descriptive and exploratory factor analyses (EFA) in SPSS.   Findings: Descriptive analysis revealed that the respondents find listening a difficult skill to acquire yet view CBLT an excellent initiative for online distance learning. EFA revealed that the items in the Listening construct were significant and to be retained. However, the EFA results reported that one item from the Online Distance Learning construct needs to be deleted from the questionnaire.   Contributions: The validated CBLT-S Listening Questionnaire serves as an instrument to investigate the impact of a novel online platform (CBLT) on students' perceptions on listening and online learning. INTEGRATED ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING INITIATIVES IN THE MALAYSIAN BANKING INDUSTRY TOWARDS FATF FULL-COMPLIANT STATUS 马来西亚银行业针对fatf完全合规地位的综合反洗钱举措

Background and Purpose: This study aims to demonstrate the integrated anti-money laundering (AML) initiatives in the Malaysian banking industry, with particular focus towards achieving the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) full-compliant status.   Methodology: This study adopts a qualitative approach, which includes reviews and analysis of secondary data in relevant literature and documents relating to money laundering risk in the Malaysian banking industry.   Findings: The integrated AML initiatives combine domestic and international efforts, which are anchored by the Malaysian Central Bank and FATF, respectively. Malaysia has been proactively abiding by the FATF requirements, and affirmative progression can be seen from the improved FATF-compliant status throughout the years.   Conclusion and Contributions: This study adds new knowledge to the existing literature by integrating domestic and international AML efforts. Achieving a FATF full-compliant status is not impossible for Malaysia with the current integrated AML initiatives in place, and this forms a strong pillar that could protect the Malaysian banking industry from money laundering risk. ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AMONG ISLAMIC STUDIES STUDENTS AND ITS CORRELATION WITH PROBLEM BASED LEARNING AND SELF-EFFICACY 伊斯兰学学生的成就动机及其与问题型学习和自我效能感的关系

Background and Purpose: Achievement Motivation defines motivation as a concept that forecasts the behavioural inclination to strive for success and performance based on a person's urge for achievement. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between academic self-efficacy and problem-based learning (PBL) and achievement motivation among students of Islamic studies.   Methodology: A quantitative research design was used for this explanatory investigation. 578 undergraduate students from three institutions in Malaysia—UM, IIUM, and USIM—totaled took part in the study. The participants were chosen at random. Both descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to analyse the data set. Additionally, an intergroup comparison analysis and the independent sample t-test were performed.   Results: The results of an independent sample t-test showed a significant difference in the mean achievement motivation scores between students of applied Islamic studies (M = 3.31, SD =.41) and those of non-applied Islamic studies (M = 3.04, SD =.38). This difference is statistically significant at t (575) = -7.94, p =.00. When ASE was controlled, PBL's influence on AchM diminished (Sobel z= 3.83, p=0.00), indicating that ASE was the mediator of the relationship between PBL and AchM. F (7, 570) = 22.42, p .0005, adj. R2 =.206, multiple regression substantially predicted ASE. The outcome demonstrates that the method used to solve problems and the kind of programs used may both be effective predictors of students' academic self-efficacy in Islamic studies.   Contribution: The study concludes that achievement has a big impact on students’ motivation. The findings of the study may contribute to the departments of Islamic studies and the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia (MoHE) in understanding the present issue of achievement motivation, as the ministry's goal is to increase students' self-efficacy. CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED BY MOTHERS OF CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY DURING THE MOVEMENT CONTROL ORDER (LOCKDOWN) IN MALAYSIA: A QUALITATIVE STUDY 马来西亚脑瘫儿童母亲在运动控制令(禁闭)期间所经历的挑战:一项定性研究

Background and Purpose: Following the global coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Malaysia, the Malaysian government had imposed a Movement Control Order (MCO) on 16 March 2020 as a measure to curb the outbreak. Consequently, all non-essential affairs were suspended and operated fully on a work-from-home basis, when schools were temporarily closed, and citizens were urged to stay at home. Despite a high number of studies on the negative impacts of MCO to various sectors, there is a little concern noted for the potential impacts on vulnerable populations, including parents with special kids such as cerebral palsy (CP). The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the burdens and difficulties associated with the experience of caring for children with CP during the MCO   Methodology: This study was designed as qualitative research. Twenty-six participants were selected using a purposive sampling method to involve in in-depth interviews. They were the parents who joined the Cerebral Palsy Support Group in Terengganu, Malaysia. The interview responses were thematically analyzed using a content analysis method.   Findings: Four main themes were revealed from the thematic analysis, namely emotional distress, worry over postponement of therapy and medical consultation, burn out due to work from home, and conditions of the CP children themselves. The findings indicated that both mothers, either working or housewife, experienced depression and deterioration in physical health and psychosocial emotions. Contributions: Interventions in the forms of financial aids, guidance for CP children self-therapy at home, and emotional supports are urgently needed to ensure mothers and their CP children maintain their quality of life despite the MCO.    Keywords: Movement control order, challenges, parents, cerebral palsy, financial distress, emotional distress.   Cite as: Wan Abdul Ghapar, W. Consequently, all non-essential affairs were suspended and operated fully on a work-from-home basis, when schools were temporarily closed, and citizens were urged to stay at home. Despite a high number of studies on the negative impacts of MCO to various sectors, there is a little concern noted for the potential impacts on vulnerable populations, including parents with special kids such as cerebral palsy (CP). The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the burdens and difficulties associated with the experience of caring for children with CP during the MCO \u0000  \u0000Methodology: This study was designed as qualitative research. Twenty-six participants were selected using a purposive sampling method to involve in in-depth interviews. They were the parents who joined the Cerebral Palsy Support Group in Terengganu, Malaysia. The interview responses were thematically analyzed using a content analysis method. \u0000  \u0000Findings: Four main themes were revealed from the thematic analysis, namely emotional distress, worry over postponement of therapy and medical consultation, burn out due to work from home, and conditions of the CP children themselves. The findings indicated that both mothers, either working or housewife, experienced depression and deterioration in physical health and psychosocial emotions. \u0000Contributions: Interventions in the forms of financial aids, guidance for CP children self-therapy at home, and emotional supports are urgently needed to ensure mothers and their CP children maintain their quality of life despite the MCO.  \u0000  \u0000Keywords: Movement control order, challenges, parents, cerebral palsy, financial distress, emotional distress. \u0000  \u0000Cite as: Wan Abdul Ghapar, W. THE EFFECT OF BLENDED LEARNING TOWARDS PUPILS’ VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT AND MOTIVATION IN AN ESL CLASSROOM 混合式学习对esl课堂学生词汇发展和学习动机的影响

Background and Purpose: Vocabulary is the fundamental aspect of a language. However, second language (L2) learners often perceive vocabulary learning as boring and difficult. As such, various efforts must be made by teachers to empower pupils’ vocabulary base to be able to be competent in the target language. Hence, this study attempts to address the use of blended learning on pupils’ vocabulary development and motivation.   Methodology: This research adopted the quantitative research design. The research participants consisted of two classes of primary school pupils chosen through purposive sampling. The pupils were divided into the experimental group and the control group. The instruments used were pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires. An independent t-test was used to compare the mean score to see any significant difference in terms of pupils’ pre-test and post-test scores whereas mean interpretation was used to determine pupils’ level of motivation.   Findings: The results revealed that pupils who learned through blended learning performed better in terms of vocabulary development compared to the pupils who learned through traditional learning. Similarly, pupils have high motivation towards blended learning instructions. It is apparent that pupils become motivated learners when their need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are fulfilled.   Contributions: This research aids teachers in constructing suitable blended learning environments for content delivery as an alternative way for students to interact with information in preparation for classroom work. PSYCHOPATHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AND SUICIDE AMONG ADULTS WITH MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER: THE MODERATING ROLE OF RESILIENCE AND MEDIATING ROLE OF DELIBERATE SELF-HARM 成人重度抑郁障碍的精神病理困扰与自杀:心理弹性的调节作用和故意自残的中介作用

Background and Purpose: In the past year, 6.6% of patients with major depressive disorders attempted suicide. Suicidal ideation and behavior may be protected by resilience. Despite decades of research on suicide risk factors in young people, our understanding of the phenomenon has not improved significantly. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between Psychopathological Distress and Suicide in Adults with Major Depressive Disorder. The current study also examines Moderating Role of Resilience and Mediating role of Deliberate Self-Harm among Adults with Major Depressive Disorder.   Methodology: Correlational research design was used in the present study. Data was taken from (n=300) adults with major depressive disorder through purposive sampling strategy. Attitude toward deliberate self-harm questionnaire, Columbia suicide screener, brief resilience scale, depression anxiety stress scale and beck depression inventory-II were used as an assessment measure.   Findings: The result showed that psychopathological distress (r = .04, p < .005) with suicide, and, resilience significant negative (r = -.11, p < .004) relationship with suicide. However, deliberates self-harm (r = .21, p = .001) showed a significant positive relationship with suicide. Regression findings found that all models were significant. In the first step (ΔR2 = .02, F (1, 298) = .51, p = .000) psychopathological distress was a statistically significant predictor (β = .04, p = .000), In the second model (ΔR2 = -.06, F (2, 297) = 2.23, p < .004) resilience (β = -.11, p = .004) was significant predictor of suicide. In the third model (ΔR2 = -.03, F (3, 296) = 4.95, p < .001) deliberate self-harm (β = .23, p = .001) was significant predictor of suicide.  In addition, mediation analysis revealed that deliberate self-harm was a significant (p = .05) mediator between psychopathological distress and suicide. Moderating findings showed significant interaction effect of psychopathological distress x resilience (B= -1.42, p= .00) and it revealed that resilience play a significant (p = .05) moderating role between psychopathological distress and suicide.   Contributions. The study concludes that higher level of psychopathological distress and deliberate self-harm leads toward higher level of suicide which cause severe level of major depressive disorder. MANAGING THE HALAL FOOD RELATED ISSUES IN THE HALAL FOOD CERTIFICATION PROCESS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF SADD AL-DHARAI' 基于sadd al-dharai概念的清真食品认证过程中清真食品相关问题的管理

Background and Purpose: Sadd al-dharai' is a secondary source in Islamic law where it means blocking the means. Sadd al-dharai' is essential for Muslim jurists to deal with the Shariah issues particularly in the halal food industry. This is because the area of the halal food industry has expanded and industrialized to accommodate the demand of the Muslim society that keeps increasing year on year. In this regard, the halal-related issues are getting complex and need Shariah clarification since many new food processing involving critical ingredients, equipment, and multi-process which require meticulous Shariah observation on this matter. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the extent to which the employment of the sadd al-dharai' as a credible tool adopted by Muslim jurist in dealing with the halal-related issues triggered in the halal food supply chain stage based on the halal certification process.   Methodology: This reviewed paper is a qualitative research study in nature where document analysis employed in this study to collect the data.  The Malaysian fatwas, books, articles either in the form of physical or online were gathered to answer the objective of the study. The data collected mostly from the years of 2010 until 2020 unless the related fatwas where the fatwas are subject to its issuance year and suitability. The  researchers  used  several keywords  alternatively like  ‘sadd al-dharai' in halal industry’, ‘fatwa and halal certification’, ‘food industry and Islamic law’ to find out relevant articles related to this discussion on the needs to investigate the employment of sadd al-dharai' in  dealing with the halal-related issues triggered in the halal food supply chain stage based on the halal certification process.  This study further simultaneously adopted the content analysis technique where the data was manually analysed and divided into four major themes based on the objective of the study.     Findings: The study has indicated that sadd al-dharai' has its peculiar function in many aspects of the Malaysia halal certification process in Malaysia, and it could be viewed based on the two approaches, namely the establishment of the halal regulatory framework and the fatwa issuance. The principle of preventing the negative aspects must take precedence, in accordance with the rule “dar’u al mafasid muqaddam ‘ala jalb al-mashalih”  by adopting several preventive actions is very significant in ensuring the halal food products reach the consumers are halalan tayyibban.   Contributions:  This study suggests that the Muslim jurists need to take into consideration the sadd al-dharai‘ as one of the sources of Shariah in ensuring the management of the halal certification process is efficient and in line with maqasid al-Shariah. The  researchers  used  several keywords  alternatively like  ‘sadd al-dharai' in halal industry’, ‘fatwa and halal certification’, ‘food industry and Islamic law’ to find out relevant articles related to this discussion on the needs to investigate the employment of sadd al-dharai' in  dealing with the halal-related issues triggered in the halal food supply chain stage based on the halal certification process.  This study further simultaneously adopted the content analysis technique where the data was manually analysed and divided into four major themes based on the objective of the study.   \u0000  \u0000Findings: The study has indicated that sadd al-dharai' has its peculiar function in many aspects of the Malaysia halal certification process in Malaysia, and it could be viewed based on the two approaches, namely the establishment of the halal regulatory framework and the fatwa issuance. The principle of preventing the negative aspects must take precedence, in accordance with the rule “dar’u al mafasid muqaddam ‘ala jalb al-mashalih”  by adopting several preventive actions is very significant in ensuring the halal food products reach the consumers are halalan tayyibban. \u0000  \u0000Contributions:  This study suggests that the Muslim jurists need to take into consideration the sadd al-dharai‘ as one of the sources of Shariah in ensuring the management of the halal certification process is efficient and in line with maqasid al-Shariah. EXPLORING GENDER DIFFERENCES IN USING METADISCOURSE FOR POLITICAL OPINION WRITING 探讨元话语在政治观点写作中的性别差异

Background and Purpose: Metadiscourse marker is one of the most commonly-used linguistic devices in persuasive writing, and it shapes writer’s arguments to the needs and expectations of the target readers. Research has consistently shown that women, on average, are less politically interested, informed, and efficacious than men. However, this does not necessarily imply that male columnists are more persuasive than female columnists when writing political opinion articles. Hence, the present study aims to investigate how male and female columnists use metadiscourse markers in political opinion writing to effectively direct their political views toward their readers.   Methodology: This descriptive study used frequency analysis, comparative analysis, and a semi-structured interview with eight ardent readers to examine metadiscourse markers used by male and female columnists in their political opinion articles, as well as the impact of persuasion on their readers. 100 opinion articles about Malaysia's 14th general election were chosen from two English-language online newspaper portals in Malaysia, The Star and the New Straits Times.   Findings: The findings revealed that female columnists employed more metadiscourse markers than male columnists. Respondents concluded that articles with more metadiscourse markers used in the text, particularly in the interpersonal category, appeared to be more persuasive. Furthermore, the findings indicated that female columnists presented a more convincing image than those produced by male columnists.   Contributions: As research conducted on gender differences in political writing is still rare, this research provided information regarding gender preferences in using metadiscourse markers in political opinion articles. Background and Purpose: Generation Y employees often have frequent job dissatisfaction with the private sector, causing job-hopping. The dissatisfaction has been identified as related to the problems in the workplace and family. Due to the fact that the problems have not been much highlighted; hence, this paper aims to investigate the impact of Work-Life Balance (WLB) on Generation Y's job satisfaction in Bangladesh's private sectors.    Methodology: This descriptive case study adopted a quantitative method to reach the research objectives. In this quantitative study, Smart Partial Least Square (PLS) was used to empirically test the model and mediating effects of the extrinsic motivational factors between work-life balance and job satisfaction. Data was collected through survey questionnaires with 24 items adopted from the previous studies; six from work-life balance, six from job satisfaction, and twelve from extrinsic motivation. A total of 500 usable samples were collected randomly from small private entrepreneur industries in Bangladesh. Findings: The results showed a significant positive relationship between work-life balance, job satisfaction, and extrinsic motivation of Generation Y. In the case of ascertaining the mediating effect, the extrinsic factors are substantial. However, the proposed strategies on Gen Y’s job satisfaction and the mediating effects of extrinsic motivational factors have not been investigated either in the Bangladeshi context or any other context.   Contributions: The findings and recommendations of this manuscript are valuable to the relevant parties, especially the stakeholders in the private sectors. The government, leadership, and management are more likely to understand employees' job satisfaction among Generation Y in this study. The outcomes of the research help to formulate and redesign job satisfaction strategies for organizational productivity and overall success. THE USE OF GOOGLE CLASSROOM AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS 谷歌课堂在中学教师中的使用

Background and Purpose: The use of technology in school classrooms and other innovations in teaching has become very crucial in the education field. Google Classroom is one of the technology innovations which has been developed to allow teachers and learners to meet up virtually to promote an interesting teaching and learning experience. In this present study, this paper outlines the results of a survey which was carried out to identify the factors the intention to use Google Classroom among secondary schools’ teachers in Kinta Selatan District in Perak. The study investigated the different parameter which contribute directly to teachers’ intention to use Google Classroom which are technical support, attitude, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and technological knowledge.   Methodology: The sample consisted 216 government secondary schools in Kinta Selatan District. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the participants with the assistance of the principals of the schools.   Findings: The result of the study revealed that the variables of attitude, perceived usefulness and technological knowledge have a significant effect in the intention to use Google Classroom. As far as technical support and perceived ease of use are concerned, the relationship with intention to use Google Classroom was found negative.   Contributions: This study contributes to the area of Google Classroom use for education since it may be used to do future research into how to improve teachers' abilities to teach more effectively using Google Classroom.   Keywords: Google Classroom, secondary schools, teachers, technology, classroom.   Cite as: Devi Piaralal, S., Mohd Tahir, M.
