The article observes stylistic features and genre representations of religious vocabulary in contemporary Russian language. The study of the development of terminological systems in certain areas of knowledge and their role in the development of a language is one of the most important problems in modern linguistics. The solution to this problem is to study the great variety of sources of spiritual, academic, business, journalistic and other areas of human activity. Religious vocabulary is the richest layer of the Russian language. The study of the use of religious terminology in the functional styles of Russian makes it possible to clearly identify the psychological, categorical and subject meanings of this type of vocabulary in the system of indigenous language of Russians. The aim of this research is to study styles and genres in which religious lexemes are found in modern Russian. This is explained by the fact that language and religion are closely related. The influence of religion on language is an indisputable fact, because in every religion there is a number of lexemes that relate only to a particular faith. At the same time, some religious lexemes have become common and formed a part of the active vocabulary of Russians. That is why we observe the following situation in the Russian language: religious terms appear in all styles of speech.

The space of social networks is improving very quickly, adapting to the needs of society. Until recently, the hashtag on social networks has been more of a tool for organizing and searching posts by topic; but today its function is expanding and deepening; new functions appear that require detailed analysis and description. Moreover, constantly evolving, the hashtag acquires the features of a self-contained text and even goes beyond social networks. In this research, the hashtag on Instagram social network was studied from a linguistic point of view, the rules of its functioning were described using examples from English and Slavic languages; the author offers a two-level classification of functions: the functions were divided into two main blocks – searching and creative ones, within each group more specific sub-functions were singled out within. We used a continuous sampling method for selecting hashtags. As a result, we researched more than 5000 hashtags extracted from posts of users living in 13 countries and writing in Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, English and other languages. For more detailed analysis of the research object, we used a descriptive method using the techniques of generalization, interpretation and classification, the method of linguistic comparison, contextual analysis, elements of semantic component analysis. It was concluded that some changes occurred in the priorities of the hashtag functions from primary searching function, which helps text space organization, to the creative one, which influences the author’s personality disclosure and audience-author interaction and is associated with an increasing attention to the personal brand and the personality of the author.

The article deals with the genre of news stories clustering around the theme of coronavirus infection in the English electronic newspaper The Daily Mail. The purpose of the paper is to systematize the main characteristics of various news stories within the selected topic. The key genre-forming features of electronic news stories are the explicit nature of authorship, a wide range of readers, synchronous and asynchronous comments. There is a description of three news stories with various structures – an inverted pyramid, an hourglass and a multimedia story. It has been determined that such kinds of news stories combine different types of information (factual, probabilistic, normative, program and evaluative); a significant event is described by alternating a verbal text and visual material, which is represented by illustrations, video segments and infographics. Interactivity is presented at two levels – on the one hand, in the interaction between a reader and a news story, on the other hand, between several news stories, divided by time, but written within the same topic. Key thematic lexis captures the theme of the text, and synonymic sets with literary and informal lexical units diversify the narrative and reduce the distance between the electronic newspaper and its audience.

The article deals with hybrid playful speech genres in gaming Internet communication. It briefly highlights different approaches to the definition of the concepts of “hybridization”, “hybrid”, “hybridity” which are significant for this work. The communicative space of the Internet has become a kind of genre-generating environment that contributes to the emergence of new speech genres obtained as a result of hybridization. The object of the research are humorous speech genres presented in the form of polycode texts related to congratulatory discourse (communicative events “Birthday” and “Wedding”) and which have become widespread in the Internet environment. They belong to secondary genres, arise as a result of the re-accentuation of primary genres (in most cases, institutional discourse) and are associated with the stylization process: a humorous birthday greeting, a humorous wedding telegram, a humorous family happiness formula, a humorous oath of a bride / groom, a humorous instruction on exploitation of the bride / groom, a playful wedding poster. These genres are associated with the implementation of the pragmalinguistic category of indirection, contain a language play, indirect speech acts, hints, hidden meanings. The goal of the article is to identify structural-compositional, verbal and non-verbal markers of hybridity in these units of gaming Internet communication. In addition to the humorous speech genres discussed in the article, the congratulatory Internet discourse contains “Family Constitution”, “Wedding Diploma”, “Technical passport of the bride / groom”, “Marriage Contract”, “Contract” (with father-in-law / mother-in-law), “Resolution of the Society of Bachelors” and many other genres, containing stylization of official documents. To date, such hybrid genres are still poorly studied and require a systematic analysis.

This is the second article in a cycle on the connection between genre studies and linguistics. The previous article discussed the question “What have genre studies given to linguistics?” This article focuses on linguistic methods used in speech genres theory: more traditional for linguistics, starting with the descriptive method and its later varieties – structural – and less traditional (component analysis, the method of immediate constituents, the generative method, the method of describing external and deep content structures, the method of semantic fields). Speech genres theory is studied in relation to linguistic paradigms. The most significant for speech genres theory is the turn in linguistics from the study of the language only to the study of speech (discourse), and thus – the recognition of the presence of a specific systematic nature of speech. Besides, speech genres theory is analyzed in connection with traditional linguistic directions: syntactic theory and methodology are used in the study of the composition of speech genres, lexicology and semantics – in the study of the names of speech genres. The major focus is on the modern period when new areas of linguistics and speech genres theory emerge simultaneously (Internet linguistics and Internet genre studies). The article also discusses division of linguistic disciplines in connection both with the speech genre division of language (structural, diachronic, functional) and with the division of genre studies (structure of the speech genres, classification of speech genres, sociology of speech genres, psychology of speech genres and genre thinking, cognitive and culturological aspects of speech genres). The role of speech genres theory in the division of linguistic disciplines into deductive and inductive is also discussed. The article appreciates the role of several outstanding linguists in the development of speech genres theory. In addition, the author briefly touches upon the connection between genre studies and literary studies: in the study of literary texts and genres they converge.

Modern communication is greatly influenced by digital technologies which make available a new type of communication – hybrid oral-written communication, that is texts which contain both verbal and non-verbal components. This research is focused on a video article as a speech genre of academic communication, which appeared relatively recently on digital scientometric platforms. The article describes constitutive features of a video article, its discourse features, and its functional requirements. The video article refers to the oral-written iconic type of text which uses different channels of information transmission, such as oral and written, verbal and non-verbal. This genre can function not only in academic, but also in professional communication, in a number of discourses where the exchange of information about technological processes, professional tools and technologies is important. The variability of information channels in the video article allows detailing the description of the reference communication situation. The article also contains a comparison of the video article genre with other multimodal genres (cinematic text and explanation video). The pragmatics of an academic video article is to convey information to specialists with background knowledge in this area. The iconic code is necessary for more detailed information that is possible when switching to the first signaling system. The video article iconic code is presented in two ways. The first method is a figure with a schematic drawing or a photograph, and the second one is a video clip of the operation using advanced technologies or new tools. A video fragment is always accompanied by a verbal description of what is filmed. The video image has significant explanatory power, allowing the reader to pay attention to various nuances of the situation presented in the video article.

The issue raised in this study touches upon different aspects related to expression of negative judgment in medical discourse. This issue lies within the boundaries of speech genre theory. The authors use analysis tools of such disciplines as functional linguistics, medical rhetoric and elocutary mastery. The comparison of accusation and reproach – two related to each other speech genres of expressing disapproval – is made in the introduction to the article. Lexicographic sources allowed to reveal essential semantic peculiarities of these genres. The authors have found that the most frequent means of expressing accusation and reproach is a rhetoric question which is used to express the doctor’s disapproval of the patient’s behaviour. It is pointed out that one of the reasons for the doctor’s failures in communication with patients is the improper use of rhetorical questions. This study attempts to discover communication pitfalls dealing with expressing disapproval. Understanding the structure and semantics of rhetoric questions allows to avoid common mistakes in the speech of medical students. It is necessary to view the object of the research in the context of argumentation and manipulation theories. The article also analyzes whether expressing disapproval can be regarded as a manipulative speech tactic. The authors claim that rhetoric questions should be regarded as irrelevant in the doctor’s dialog with the patient due to their negative impact on the patient’s emotional and psychological state. It is necessary to remember about risks related to iatrogenic factors.

A muslim sermon is a religious genre that attracts the attention of specialists in various fields of knowledge: theologians, religious scholars, historians, sociologists, political scientists, and linguists. Having emerged simultaneously with the emergence of Islam, the khutbah has come a long way and has retained its ritual side unchanged. In the 20th – 21st centuries in the Russian Empire, in the Soviet Union, and later in the Russian Federation, it adapted to local conditions and catered to the political and ethnocultural needs of the time, one of which was the question of the language of its presentation. The orientation towards the canonical Arabic language or the ethnic language of the majority of the parishioners was explained by the requirements to preserve the doctrine in its original purity, or by the need to bring believers to closer understanding of the pastoral word. Today, this issue still remains controversial due to the fact that the Russian language, which has acquired the status of the state language, displaces bilingualism from many spheres of life, and small peoples lose their national identity because of this. The strengthening of the role of the Russian language occurs also due to the fact that now it performs the function of the language of inter-confessional and intra-confessional communication. The state policy in the sphere of religion and the change in the social conditions of people’s life affected the expansion of the reasons for reading the khutbahs and the conditions for their conduct, which gave rise to certain genre transformations. In the context of the pandemic, not only the format of sermons (on-line khutbahs) has changed but also the level of creativity has increased, which is based on the collective activity of the imam-khatib and the team of his associates and students.

The paper deals with ironic edification – autosemantic utterances which contain critical evaluation of human shortcomings expressed in derisive assertion of absurd, or pretentious, or malicious behavior certain people manifest. They make a specific class of proverbs, aphorisms, and miniatures of modern network discourse. They are heterogeneous and vary from profound observations of human character up to banalities used to amuse a down-home partner, from witty phrases up to acid black humour. They are very common in everyday conversations and serve to help interlocutors express their understanding of hidden manipulations they are exposed to. Structurally they may be simple and composite, the former are integral sentences expressing a certain attitude to norms of behavior, the latter are judgments which consist of two parts, in the first part a certain positive norm of behavior is expressed, and in the second part it is denied. Their integral semantic content is a frame which expresses a concessive juxtaposition of values, pragmatically they promote important assumptions about realistic evaluation of human nature, and their most relevant syntactic feature is a ludic allusion to well-known texts or events.

The article deals with the thrash talk as a speech genre. The term, which came to modern Russian from English, refers to a speech practice in which offensive statements are formulated against the opponent, designed to disturb the opponent’s psychological equanimity. It can be a form of bragging or insulting in competitive situations. The research was conducted in the context of Russian and foreign works on invective practice in Russian linguoculture, which not only represent a constant, but evolve as well. Such problems as the correlation between national-specific and universal aspects, linguistic and extralinguistic aspects, development of new phenomena on a national basis and borrowings are taken into account. Thrash-talk, if we use this term in a narrow sense, is autochthonous for Russian linguoculture. The methodology of the study is based on the comparison the description of speech practice with the standard. For our purposes we have formulated the standards “accusation”, “humiliation” and “hyperidenticity”, the components of the description of which were linguistic and psychological features. Thus, we can say that our research is carried out within the paradigm of psycholinguistics. This is justified by the fact that thrash talk balances on the edge of language and psyche. As a result of the comparison procedure we can conclude that there is a correspondence or discrepancy between these descriptions. The basis of our research were open Internet sources that contain examples of thrash talk as an element of characters’ speech behavior in texts or videos. As a result of the study it was possible to describe and systematize speech goals – persuasion and demonstration, the use of figurative, stylistically marked, expressively colored language means, psychological manipulative means of inducement and threat. In conclusion the article outlines the prospects for research related to such genres as flaming, flying, sledging, wolf-whistling, cat-calling, street-harassment, etc.
