A study on gross and histopathological pulmonary lesions of cattle slaughtered at Abergelle Abattoir, Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia 埃塞俄比亚提格雷Mekelle Abergelle屠宰场屠宰牛的肉眼和组织病理学肺部病变的研究

Animals in sub-Saharan African countries are used as source of milk, meat, hides and skin where animal diseases are one of the primary constraints in increasing the productivity of food animals. Studies were conducted to examine various respiratory problems of cattle with purpose of identifying the gross and histopathological lesions in lungs of slaughtered cattle at Abergelle Export Abattoir from April 2015 to June 2015 Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. A total of 240 lungs of cattle originating from different parts of Tigray regions were examined and as many as 208 lung samples with gross pulmonary lesions were collected for further confirmatory histopathological study. The prevalence of pulmonary lesions of cattle in this study was 86.6% (n=208). The case of pneumonia was found to be highest followed by lung emphysema and congestion besides cases of oedema, hydatidosis, abscess and atelectasis. These results indicated that respiratory problem is still a major health problem in cattle production. Key words: Lung, pneumonia, pulmonary lesion, Ethiopia.

Determination of pH and water holding capacity of beef from selected butcher shops of Mekelle, Ethiopia 测定埃塞俄比亚Mekelle肉店牛肉的pH值和持水量

A cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the water holding capacity (WHC) of beef sold in selected butcher shops of Mekelle, Ethiopia and to establish the effects of pre-slaughter rests and age of the animals with pH and WHC of the meats. A total of 80 samples from 80 randomly selected butcher shops were sampled in 6 months study period of time, from May to October. Each sample was accompanied by questionnaires. The meats were taken to the laboratory to measure pH and water holding capacity using the filter paper press and drip loss methods. The means and standard deviations of filter paper press and drip loss were found as 49.4 ± 5.85 and 4.58 ± 0.96, respectively. The age of the slaughtered animals had significant association (p<0.05) with the pH measured at 24 h post-slaughter, drip loss and filter paper press measurements. The pre-slaughter rest period had strong effect on pH (p<0.05) at 3 h post-slaughter. The present study concluded that water holding capacity and pH as quality indicators of meat are influenced by age and pre-slaughter rest of the slaughtered animals.   Key words: Age, drip loss, filter paper press, pH, pre-slaughter stress.

Genetic diversity of Mycobacterium bovis in Jalisco, Mexico: Tracing back sources of infection 墨西哥哈利斯科州牛分枝杆菌的遗传多样性:追溯感染源

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a disease of cattle that presents risk to public health, causing severe economic losses to the livestock industry and difficulty in eradication because of its complex epidemiology. The aim of this study was to identify relationships between Mycobacterium bovis strains from cattle in the State of Jalisco, and those of other States of Mexico. Molecular fingerprints of 337 M. bovis isolates from Jalisco, and 1152 from other States of Mexico were included in the study. Isolates were obtained from tubercles between 1997 and 2015. Evolutionary relationship was determined throughout spoligoforest (www.emi.unsw.edu.au/spoltools/). From 337 isolates from Jalisco, 59 spoligotypes were obtained, ten of them included 48% of all isolates in the state. Five spoligotypes were common to beef and dairy cattle. The molecular analysis showed eight clusters in a philogenetic three: one with three subclusters of nine isolates each, all from dairy cattle; four with two isolates, including dairy and beef cattle. All spoligotypes from Jalisco have been reported in other states, four of the most frequent ones: SB0673, SB0971, SB0669 and SB0140, were the same as in other states. The most frequent spoligotypes of M. bovis found in Jalisco were also the most frequent ones in other parts of Mexico. However, there is no evidence to conclude that Jalisco is the source of infection to other states since no information on movement and destination of cattle could be documented. This study was conducted to evaluate drug resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus in raw milk, fresh fruit juice and dairy farms settings of Mekelle, Tigray. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the total 258 samples of raw cow milk and fresh fruit juice. Antimicrobial resistance status was also checked for identified S. aureus using various commonly used antimicrobial discs. The overall viable staphylococcal count mean and standard deviation of samples from milk shop, fruit juice and dairy milk were found to be 8.86±107, 7.2 × 107, 8.65±107 cfu/ml, 33.87±106, 6.68±106 and 22.0±106, respectively. Among the total 258 samples, 75 (29.07%) samples were found positive for S. aureus. Proportion of the isolation from milk shop, fruit juice and dairy milk samples were 20 (23.26%), 32 (37.21%) and 23 (26.74%), respectively. Antimicrobial test of the high resistance revealed vancomycin (100%), ampicillin (90.9%). ciprofloxacin (90.9%), ceftaroline (63.6%), penicillin-G (81.8%) and clindamycin (72.7%) whereas they are highly susceptible to some antibiotics like gentamicin (100%), streptomycin (81.8%), norfloxacin (63.6%), chloramphenicol (81.8%), sulfamethoxazole (96%), kanamycin (72.7%), polymixin B (72.7%), erythromycin (72.7%) and tetracycline (81.8); also, some S. aureus also showed multi-drug resistance pattern. The present study, we isolated and determined the drug Resistance profile of S. aruesu in Mekelle city, Northern Ethiopia alarmingly, the S. aureus isolates circulating in the raw cow milk, fresh fruit juice and dairy milk. High level of S. aureus isolation from personnel and equipment besides food samples reveals that the hygiene practice is substandard. Prudent drug use and improved hygienic practice is recommended in the raw cow milk of dairy farms and fresh fruit juice to safeguard the public from the risk of acquiring infections and multiple drug resistance (MDR) pathogenic S. aureus.
