Yarns may twist either as cylindrical bundles of fibres or as flattened ribbons: the former mode has been the basis of most scientific studies. The present paper describes the behaviour of a rubber strip as a model of a yarn ribbon. On twisting the strip, the twisted form that appears initially Is subsequently replaced by a wrapped-ribbon form. The energy relations causing this are discussed, and the theoretical prediction is compared with experimental results. The geometry of the wrapped-ribbon form is analysed, and its consequences oti the expected form of yarns are considered. A wrapped-ribbon yarn may degenerate by collapse into a cylinder, but the relics of the ribbon-twisting are apparent in asymmetry and in a redistribution of the fibres in the yarn.

In weaving, a warp must withstand a repeated stretching caused by shedding and beat-up. It is also subjected to abrasion, which is mainly due to shedding and reed motion. The yarns are therefore sized, and the properties of a sizing agent that are of primary influence are the degree of protection from abrasion imparted to the yarn, the adhesive power between the fibres, and the properties of the size film. An account is given of an investigation of the factors influencing the abrasionresistance of a yarn before and after sizing, namely, the twist factor, the size content, and the properties of the size.

Actual and model yams were examined in attempts to observe differences between cylindrical twisting and ribbon-twisting. The model yarn assemblies consisted of elastic threads arranged in various configurations and twisted either in static lengths or in continuous feeding: the position of each thread could be followed. Actual yarns were examined in three ways: as cross-sections, which often showed asymmetry attributed to ribbon-twisting; during untwisting, with the yarn surface coated; and after twisting of rovings, spun yarns, and continuous-filament yarns in ways designed to bring about cylindrical twisting and ribbon-twisting. The tendency of fibres from one side of a ribbon to go into the centre of a yarn was demonstrated.

An account is given of the development of a technique for the assessment of the streakiness of fabrics knitted from worsted blended-fibre yarns in which the fibres constituting the blend are of different colours. A filter colorimeter was used for the tests, and an account is given of trials made to determine the optimum conditions for it. The results of tests made with the instrument are compared with visual assessments of the streakiness of knitted fabrics, and it is shown that only when the fabrics were of a similar degree of streakiness and the judges were unable to distinguish between them was the correlation between the subjective and objective methods of assessment low. It is concluded that the instrumental technique possesses distinct possibilities for application to the evaluation of the streakiness of colour-mixture yams and of fabrics made of them.

A method of bulking continuous-filament nylon yams in both monofilament and multifilament structures, by passing them over a heated-wire system, is described. Yarns produced under various conditions of temperature and tension are compared in knitted-fabric structures with similar fabrics knitted from the basic parent yarns. The percentage bulk increase is calculated by two methods: the assessment of stitch density and the use of a wad-weight test, from which area density can be derived.

The rate of hydrolysis of y-keratose in 5N HCl at 37°C has been followed by determination of the free amino groups formed. A partial hydrolysate of γ-keratose has been prepared in which the average chain length of the peptides was two amino-acid residues. This partial hydrolysate has been fractionated, first by ion-exchange chromatography and then by two-dimensional paper chroniatography or high-voltage paper electrophoresis. Fifteen di- and tripeptides have been identified, and several other peptides containing up to five amino-acid residues were found to be possibly present in the hydrolysate. In particular, cysteylcysteic acid has been shown to be present in γ-keratose, although previous workers have denied its presence.
