42—THE WEAR-RESISTANCE, AS DETERMINED BY THE ACCELEROTOR AND BOCKING FABRIC TESTER, AND TENSILE PROPERTIES OF RESIN-TREATED VISCOSE RAYON

Tests on lengths of spun viscose rayon fabric finished with urea–formaldehyde melamme–formaldehyde, methylated urea–formaldehyde, and ethylene urea–formaldehyde show that wear-resistance as measured by the Bocking Fabric Tester decreases directly with an increase in the resin content, whereas the rate of loss of weight during an Accelerotor test is also influenced by the type of resin. An increase in resin content led to an increase in initial modulus and secant modulus that was dependent on the type of resin, and to a decrease in extension and energy for rupture that was independent of the type of resin. It is suggested that these items are connected and that wear-resistance is influenced by the mechanical properties of the material. This is supported by the agreement between the initial modulus and Accelerotor results, and between the secant modulus at break, extension at break, and energy for rupture and the results obtanied on the Bocking Fabric Tester.

Studies have been made of the effects of contact time, liquor temperature, detergent concentration, and builder concentration on the scouring efficiency of soap and non-ionic detergent liquors. Time and detergent-concentration effects do not change from one scouring system to another, but temperature and builder-concentration effects are different in different systems.

A steam press has been modified in order to control independently the steam temperature and humidity and the rate of steam flow. The changes in temperature and moisture regain in wool fabrics have been studied in relation to these variables. A method of measuring the degree of setting has been established, and optimum conditions for steam-pressing of wool fabrics have been determined.

37—A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE STIFFNESS AND CREASE RECOVERY OF MONOFILAMENT FABRICS [37]

A theoretical expression is derived for the variation of the crease-recovery angle of a plain-weave monofilament fabric with orientation of the crease to the thread directions; it involves the constructional parameters of the fabric, the flexural and torsional rigidities of the monofilaments, and their elastic recoveries from flexural and torsional strains. This expression has been checked for two nylon fabrics, and, with one adjustable parameter, good agreement is obtained between the theoretical and observed polar variations. The variation of the fiexural rigidity of these fabrics with orientation is shown to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions of Cooper.

36—NEW CATALYSTS FOR GRAFT-COPOLYMER FORMATION IN WOOL FIBRES

A new method for the initiation of graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile inside the wool fibre has been developed by using as catalysts the adducts formed between bis(acetylacetonato) copperII and either ammonium trichloroacetate or trichloroacetic acid. The former catalyst has the simpler kinetics, but polymergrafting is frequently accompanied by the formation of homopolymer. Catalysis by trichloracetic acid is more difficult to interpret and control, but its successful application leads to efficient grafting, with large weight increases and retention of a good colour by the wool. Comparison between wool-grafting and polymerization experiments in solution shows that the environment inside the wool fibre modifies the reaction kinetits.

38—THE RELATIVE MERITS OF THE NOBLE AND FRENCH COMBS IN RECOMBING

A comparison is reported of the performance of the Noble and French combs in the recombing of oil-combed wool tops. The tops were spun into worsted yarns and the yarns were woven into fabrics, which were made up into garments. The products of the two types of comb were compared at each stage, and it is shown that, in almost every instance, the Noble comb gave more satisfactory results.

39—ANALYSIS OF YARN IRREGULARITY FOR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION IN JUTE-SPINNING
Pub Date : 1966-11-01 DOI: 10.1080/19447026608662396
B. Banerjee
The diameter irregularity of jute yarns has been shown to be related with other yarn characteristics. A method has been developed for evaluating the component of yarn irregularity due to the fibre properties and random distribution of fibres in the yarns; the ratio between the observed irregularity of yarns and this component has then been used as an index to specify the over-all performance of the preparatory and spinning operations in a mill. The index values for yarn samples collected from different mills throughout the industry have been determined, and a suitable grading scheme in terms of the index is suggested. This should be of practical use for quality and process control in jute mills.
