A mathematical analysis of various causes of irregular pickspacing has been carried out with special reference to the effect of warp and fabric relaxation on the position of the cloth fell and pickspacing.The effect of the free length of warp and fabric and the effect of different types of let-off motion are discussed.

22—Measurement of the Extent of Delustring of Filament Fabrics 长丝织物消光线长度的测量

This paper completes the theory of the method of measuring the extent of “delustre” by describing, and discussing, in relation to structure, the ref1ection of plane-polarized light by filament yarns and fabrics and the effect of delustring on the depolarization.The characteristics of the depolarization are interpreted by dividing the total reflection (in the manner described in the previous paper) into the regular reflection (upper surface and internal), the irregular reflection, and the delustre-scattered reflection. The depolarization of each is considered in terms of a “polarized” component and a “depolarized” component of the reflection.The conclusions drawn provide additional support for the interpretations of reflections in terms of structure put forward in the previous paper and show that the use of polarized light increases the sensitivity of the method of measurement of delustre.

The existence of a barrier to non-polar solvents has been shown to operate during solvent extraction of scoured wool and tops and a mechanism for the formation of such a complex layer is proposed by analogy with the phase separations observed with soap-amphiphile-water systems. Direct evidence for the existence of a complex protective layer has been obtained by extraction experiments on grease layers.

This paper describes measurements designed to discover how the irregularity introduced during drafting on cotton spinning machinery depends on the processing conditions and upon the properties of the fibres. Empirical relations are given for the added irregularity introduced during drafting as a function of the count or hank number of the material entering the rollers, the draft, the number of ends and the roller setting, and the implication of these relations are discussed. Part I deals with the results obtained on the slubbing and intermediate frames, and briefly di cusses their application to the checking of theories of drafting. Part II describe a more limited series of measurements on the spinning frame, and compares the results with those obtained on the intermediate frame.
