Purpose This study proposes a mix of historical, organizational and generational life cycles as explanatory variables for the “sharing style” of intentional communities such as kibbutzim in Israel. It evaluates the effectiveness of four strategies, namely, economic ownership, ultimate personal freedom, sense of belonging and religious belief employed by kibbutzim to sustain their lifestyles as sharing communities.Design/methodology/approach The study’s data collection methods include a mix of literature review and content analysis of interviews and observations conducted by the study’s researchers over a period of twenty years.Findings Environmental uncertainty, which served as one of the main motivators for the establishment of kibbutzim, has been diminished over their life cycle, forcing them to change their socioeconomic model of sharing. Most kibbutzim elected to employ the household’s economic private ownership strategy to move from the “maturity” to the “renewal” lifecycle stage, thereby avoiding “decline.” Three representative kibbutzim chose to deploy ultimate personal freedom, enhanced sense of belonging and shared religious practice strategies to reach the renewal stage.Practical implications Current crises, such as weather disasters, pandemics and wars, have demonstrated the justification for the existence of shared leadership communities. This study considers the advantages and pitfalls of economic and psychological conditions necessary for sustaining such communities over the period of their life cycles. We propose that out of the four strategies analyzed, only the strategy of economic private ownership can be sustained under conditions of global, national and commune’s increasing levels of individualism.Originality/value This study introduces historical, organizational and generational elements into the commonly described construct of organizational and product life cycles. It describes four variations of the communal sharing socioeconomic model that have been adopted to combat the degradation of the communes into the decline stage and evaluate their viability. The study therefore generalizes life cycle theory to non-for-profit organizations, making life cycle theory more specific.

PurposeThis paper looks at how stakeholders co-create value at mega-events from a service ecosystem perspective. Despite the growing interest, little is known about how value is co-created through such initiatives for individual stakeholders and the community.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on institutional and stakeholder theory, the study focuses on Cortina 2021, the World Ski Championships held in Italy in February 2021. It investigates how multiple actors co-create value within a service ecosystem through qualitative interviews with key stakeholders combined with the analysis of official documents and reports.FindingsThe research established that key stakeholders were willing to get involved with Cortina 2021 if they recognised the value which could be co-created. Such an ecosystem requires a focal organisation with a clear regulative and normative framework and a common cultural basis. The latter helped resilience in the extraordinary circumstances of Cortina 2021 and safeguarded long-term impacts, even though the expected short-term ones were compromised.Practical implicationsFrom a managerial point of view, the evidence from Cortina 2021 shows how a clear strategy with well-defined stakeholder engagement mechanisms can facilitate value co-creation in service ecosystems. Moreover, when regulative and normative elements are blurred because of an extraordinary circumstance, resource integration and value creation processes need to be entrusted to those cultural elements that characterise an ecosystem.Originality/valueThe study takes an ecosystemic approach to mega-events to explore value creation for the whole community at the macro level, not only at the individual or organisational level, even during a crisis, which greatly impaired the preparation and running of the event.

Purpose

This review aims to present the state of the art regarding the impact of financial technology (FinTech) on financial inclusion and its implications for consumers and institutions in terms of accessibility, usage and quality. An integrated framework is developed to illustrate the primary thematic areas for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

We performed a systematic literature review (SLR) to summarize and synthesize existing research published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Forty-two eligible studies were identified from the Web of Science database and a cross-reference search.

Findings

The results suggest that FinTech promotes financial inclusion for consumers and businesses by increasing the accessibility, usage and quality of financial products. We present a multidisciplinary integrative framework that links the three dimensions of financial inclusion (i.e. access, usage and quality) to financial technology. Finally, we propose several avenues for future research.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first SLR on how FinTech is associated with the accessibility, usage and quality of financial products. We provide an integrative framework for understanding the topic with implications in different fields.

Purpose

This paper investigates the relationship between commitment to ESG practices and firm performance using a synthetic index based on ESG disclosure and ESG performance scores.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the Mazziotta-Pareto aggregation method, we develop a novel synthetic index of ESG engagement based on ESG rating and disclosure. This index is employed in a dynamic panel regression, implemented using the Arellano-Bond estimator, to explain profitability in a sample of 146 listed Canadian firms over the period spanning from 2014 to 2021.

Findings

ESG practices may either foster or hinder firm performance. In particular, a synergy emerges between the social and environmental dimensions of ESG practices, shedding light on the relevance of high standards in terms of environmental and social activities.

Practical implications

The study emphasizes the significance of acknowledging the various facets of ESG engagement and the necessity of transcending the current constraints of accessible ESG data and ratings. Synthetic indices combining different types of ESG information may contribute to mitigating the problems created by strategic disclosure on the part of firms, which typically results in undesirable practices such as greenwashing and social washing.

Originality/value

This is the first study that applies the Mazziotta-Pareto method to develop a synthetic index of ESG engagement, tackling each pillar separately. Moreover, when investigating the effect of ESG engagement on profitability, we allow for cross-pillar synergies and/or trade-offs.

Purpose

This research investigates the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies (I4.0) on the resilience of manufacturing firms against the COVID-19 pandemic. The study explores the mediating effects linked to the firm’s supply chain resilience and absorptive capacity in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical analysis involves 304 manufacturing firms and uses Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). A two-step hierarchical component model has been employed, considering the statistical analysis validation (reliability and validity) of the LOC and HOC models. The choice of the manufacturing industry is justified due to its degree of automation in emerging economies, such as Mexico, and its significant impact on job creation and the national gross domestic product.

Findings

The results confirm the positive impact of I4.0 technologies on companies’ resilience to COVID-19. They also support the indirect effects of the firm’s supply chain resilience and absorptive capacity. Absorptive capacity was found to have a higher significant indirect effect than supply chain resilience. Consequently, the study accentuates the significance of leveraging external knowledge and highlights the role of acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation capabilities in enhancing absorptive capacity.

Research limitations/implications

The implications of this research extend to both manufacturing companies and public administrations, suggesting the need for I4.0 technologies implementation and supportive policies aimed at fostering absorptive capacity.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature by filling gaps in empirical studies in the context of developing economies. It provides valuable insights into the effects of I4.0 on absorptive capacity, supply chain resilience, and COVID-19 resilience, particularly in non-essential supply chains. It enriches the understanding of how I4.0 impacts the absorptive capacity and resilience of the supply chain during the COVID-19 crisis.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand whether and how the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) paradigm can be useful in social reporting in the context of nonprofit healthcare organizations. In other words, the study deals with non-financial reporting and information, allowing external stakeholders to comprehensively evaluate the organization’s performance and behavior, investigating internal stakeholder perception over ESG paradigm application.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a case study approach investigating four cases among nonprofit healthcare organizations in Italy. Analyses of available primary sources have been conducted, followed by semi-structured interviews. Interviews were then transcribed and coded in a joint blinded process by all authors. More specifically, three areas have been investigated: (1) factors motivating the development of non-financial disclosure practices; (2) the rationale behind the organization’s decision to include specific topics; and (3) the future perspective on the future of non-financial disclosure within the specific sector.

Findings

ESG may serve as a suitable framework to create comparable documents that can act as benchmarks for similar institutions. However, while nonprofit organizations (NPOs) can draw inspiration from ESG, the utility of these criteria should be thoughtfully tailored to align with the organization’s mission. The ESG using as a general guide, instead of implementing it as a real tool to assess performances, emerges as a positive practice. NPOs should not focus on fulfilling ESG requirements bur rather take inspiration from them. Otherwise, the risk is an excess of focus on the formal aspect rather than on its content.

Originality/value

The study contributes to a better understanding of social and ESG’ reporting activities and approaches in the healthcare sector by describing some case studies and the effect of sustainability in the social reporting of nonprofit healthcare organizations.

Purpose

This paper explores the direct and indirect effects of family emotional, social and organizational support on Innovative Work Behavior (IWB) through psychological capital (Psy.Cap).

Design/methodology/approach

Selected by conducting stratified random sampling techniques, 397 employees completed a questionnaire. We used structural equation modeling and multi-group testing by Smart-PLS3 to analyze the data.

Findings

Findings reveal that all sources of social-emotional support, including family, supervisor and co-worker support, positively affect Psy.Cap. Moreover, Psy.Cap mediates the effect of family, co-workers and supervisors' emotional support on IWB. The multi-group analysis indicates that all relationships in the model are significant for both groups of males and females; however, there are no significant differences in the link between organizational support and psychological capital, as well as family and co-worker support and innovative work behavior between males and females. The study's results demonstrate the significantly higher impact of family emotional support – Psy.Cap and supervisor support on IWB amongst females compared to their male counterparts.

Originality/value

The implications of this research highlight the importance of considering affective factors on employees’ IWB, as well as the differences between genders in this regard.

Purpose

Despite the ongoing scholarly interest in greenwashing, it is not well known the impact of multiple institutional pressures on greenwashing in corporate social responsibility (CSR). Following the institutional logics perspective, this study investigates how three distinct logics – commercial, public, and social welfare – drive greenwashing and whether organizational capability for blending diverse CSR expectations reverses this link.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study conceptualized and tested an original model on how three institutional logics influence greenwashing in CSR, with the mediation effect of hybridization capability as a response to logic plurality. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was performed on a survey data, which was collected from 150 middle managers in Turkey.

Findings

The results show that while commercial logic has no direct or indirect impact on greenwashing, public and social welfare logics drive greenwashing in CSR. However, these effects are reversed when the CSR hybridization capability increases.

Practical implications

This study contributes to the understanding of what predicts CSR greenwashing by integrating a comprehensive theoretical framework involving multiple institutional logics, conflicting stakeholder demands, and organizational hybridity.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that theoretically and empirically analyzed how the exposure of multiple external pressures affects the CSR greenwashing and how it can be reversed by CSR hybridization capability. This capability mitigates the threats and challenges of multiple logics and turns them into an opportunity to gain legitimacy in the eyes of stakeholders by preventing greenwashing.

Purpose

In the wake of the COVID-19 public health crisis, organizations have increasingly adopted new technologies and new working modalities (e.g. teleworking, smart working and remote working). However, these important changes led to increased work-related stress for employees who are not always able to cope with the actual intrusive digital professional reality. This work identifies the negative effects of technology and new work modalities on employees’ well-being. It suggests remedies based on real-life examples to meet employees’ emerging needs in the post-COVID-19 era.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews with a variety of workers in different organizational contexts and positions were used as support for our recommendations. In particular, we had representation from managers, human resource (HR) officers, employees, psychologists, consultants and coaches.

Findings

The paper identifies eight specific negative effects of technology and new work modalities, such as inability to cope with stress, negative physical consequences, smart working fatigue, breaking down of the boundaries between private and professional life, decrease in work-life balance, hyper-connection, psychological and psychosomatic symptoms and burnout syndrome. Moreover, the paper proposes timely remedies, including enhancing leaders’ awareness, the right to disconnect and rethinking HR policies.

Practical implications

It offers practical insights and encompasses views from various internal stakeholders (HR officers, senior managers, managers, subordinates and an organizational counselor) and external stakeholders (psychologists, consultants and coaches). The paper concludes with experience-based tips, highlighting the need for digital leadership to be able to both manage performance and guarantee people psychological safety at the same time. The remedies suggested are “ready-to-use” best practices to implement for safeguarding the health of employees.

Originality/value

This research is not only pertinent for managers grappling with these challenges in their everyday work but also valuable for scholars seeking to deepen their understanding of the topic through practice-based evidence. Furthermore, it significantly contributes to the literature as, while previous works have only analyzed findings singularly, this work is focused on the different perspectives of different internal and external stakeholders, offering a more comprehensive overview. Originality lies precisely in having taken into consideration the point of view of many actors with different roles and backgrounds.

Purpose

This article examines the links between nonprofits and communities’ resilience during the COVID-19 crisis. Previous research on resilience has overlooked nonprofits, with limited studies on their ongoing resilience processes. While nonprofits’ potential to lead their communities’ resilience has been highlighted, we know little about how this potential can be fully achieved.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonprofit’s potential to lead their communities’ resilience has been highlighted. Yet, nonprofits are also deeply affected by crises, and little is known about their organizational resilience. This study explores the interplay between nonprofits’ organizational resilience and community resilience in the face of crises. We draw from an international comparative case study based on two participatory research designs in France and Quebec during the Covid-19 crisis.

Findings

The results highlight similarities and differences in how nonprofits’ developed organizational resilience capabilities. These different organizational resilience processes affected in return the reactive and proactive roles the nonprofits could play in community resilience.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of the research method include its time boundaries, the specificity of the Covid-19 crisis, which differs from natural hazards which are traditionally studied in the resilience literature (e.g.: Roberts et al., 2021). The unicity of the cases fits the comprehensive purpose of the study, and generalizations of the results are limited.

Practical implications

Empirically, we offer an original approach of nonprofits and community resilience as ongoing interdependent processes.

Originality/value

The article contributes to the organizational resilience literature in refining how nonprofits’ characteristics and embeddedness in their community affect their development of resilience capabilities. We theorize the dynamic reciprocal links between nonprofits and community resilience.
