End-to-end broadband service delivery requires remote management of devices in the home network, beyond the home gateway (HG). The service provider can only put limited requirements to these of-the-shelf devices, and therefore has to make intelligent use of their given control and management protocols. We developed a demonstrator for the remote management of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) devices in the home with a simple TR-069/UPnP proxy on the HG. It shows how UPnP devices can be discovered, configured, controlled and monitored with a legacy TR-069 auto-configuration server.

In Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), a new entity called Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) performs the mobility-related signaling with the Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) on behalf of the Mobile Node (MN) and establishes a tunnel with the LMA. However, a number of MNs must be associated with a MAG and hence, the MAG can be easily overloaded. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a load balancing mechanism among the MAGs in the PMIPv6 network. Simulation results show that the propose load balancing mechanism can achieve low queuing delay at the MAGs in the PMIPv6 network.

Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks operate in the unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM band. This "unlicensed" band is crowded by other wireless devices like baby monitors, Bluetooth based devices, and cordless phones. Microwave Ovens (MWO) are particularly popular unintentional transmitters that also operate in this band. This paper discusses a research focused on quantitatively analyzing the effects of various interferers on Wi-Fi based on metrics such as average data rates, number of packets transmitted, total power, retry rate and CRC error rate. This analysis will be a key element in designing and comparing various interference mitigation mechanisms in Wi-Fi and implementing restrictions on proprietary devices.

In this paper, a multi-tree construction algorithm based on overlay service network is proposed, which is tailored toward support of multi-channel live media delivery. The multiple source-specific trees are built to deliver the multiple sources respectively on shared overlay network resources. Unlike the legacy schemes, the construction of trees is not from the view of a single tree, but considering the shared overlay nodes by multiple trees holistically. The relativity of the different tree sessions is well considered. From the simulation results, a better-balanced performance is achieved among different sessions. Moreover, the proposed method makes it possible for the overlay service provider to gain a better control of the multiple sessions, and provides service differentiation on overlay service network.

Walkie-talkie kind of communication has been gaining attention as a service in cellular networks. Traditional walkie-talkie like services require network infrastructure for its operation. While infrastructure-less operation in mobile ad-hoc networks has been explored in the past, such approaches attempt to establish an end-to-end path for communications, which may be unstable and exhibit bad performance over multiple hops; and often the node density may be insufficient to establish such paths in the first place. In this demo, we apply the concept of asynchronous message passing using delay-tolerant networking to audio messages which get recorded and then transmitted via store-carry-and-forward from the source to the destination. We present an implementation of the DT-Talkie on the Nokia Internet tablets, leveraging the DTN reference implementation developed in the concept of the DTN Research Group.

We propose a selective detection scheme based on pulse repetition for coherent IR-UWB (Impulse Radio-Ultra Wide Band) systems. For signal modulation and demodulation, we consider bi-phase modulation and on-off keying that are widely used in the coherent IR-UWB systems. The proposed selective detection scheme transmits the UWB signals by pulse repetition at the UWB transmitter to take system complexity into account, like conventional PRC (Pulse Repetition Coding). However, the proposed scheme performs selective detection by estimating the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the received pulse-repeated signal to effectively improve BER (Bit Error Rate) performance at the UWB receiver, unlike the conventional PRC. Simulation results in the IEEE 802.15.4a channel models reveals that the proposed scheme effectively improves BER performance of the coherent IR-UWB systems without much increment of system complexity, as compared to the conventional PRC.

Convergence of fixed, mobile and cable networks has tackled well known patterns, where incumbent operators have reliable understanding of telecommunication and broadcaster of TV provisioning. Currently both parties are cannibalizing their business models by providing integrated bundled solutions: telecommunication, Internet and TV - known under the notion of Triple Play. To-date, a lot of vendor specific silo approaches are appearing. These approaches lack of three characteristics: cross-vendor interoperability, integrated telecommunication and interactivity. Thus, Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) addressing the standardization of open interfaces to face these issues. This paper presents Fraunhofer FOKUS activities towards Next Generation IPTV ecosystems and proposes a novel IPTV architecture and a prototypical implementation facing interoperability, telecommunication and interactivity.

Today, VoD is an important technology for many applications, and a number of periodic broadcasting schemes have been proposed to support a large number of receivers. However, these schemes are not suitable to the environment where wired and wireless devices coexist. With the existing schemes dealing with heterogeneous receivers, the service latency of low-end clients is reduced by sacrificing that of high-end clients. In this paper we propose a novel scheme reducing the service latency of high-end clients as well by partitioning the first segment and transmitting them through sub-channels added according to the network condition. Computer simulation shows that the service latency is significantly decreased compared to the existing scheme.

This paper presents an evaluation of a deployed WiMAX system operating in the 4.9GHz Public Safety Band in the City of Tulsa. The study includes propagation analysis for the coverage and network performance tests to demonstrate the viability of a WiMAX system as a medium for public safety. We considered existing propagation models in the UHF band (300 MHz to 3 GHz) to be applied to 4.9 GHz and compared the characteristics predicted by the models with the measured data. The results show that of the three models presented, the Cost-231 Hata Model best predicts the characteristics of the deployed WiMAX system. Network performance tests were also conducted to measure the throughput of the system at various adaptive modulation rates.

This paper intends to provide an architectural overview designed to improve interactivity around IPTV services, and focusing on optimization and new services that can be achieved when IMS is combined with existing standards such as MPEG-4, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. Several approaches have introduced the need for an integrated solution within the core of an IMS network. In addition, MPEG as a set of standards has proved to be efficient and is well accepted in the IPTV industry world. On top of this architecture, various real life business cases are presented to show the improvements and advantages of this paper.
