Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, unemployment has surged in many sectors of the economy. While unemployment in food services is largely the product of demand-side shocks, such as restaurant and school closures, unemployment in food processing and production is related to supply-side factors such as issues of worker safety.

The US grocery market was worth more than $600 billion in 2019 but only about 5% of this value is contributed by online purchases. With the projected growth in online grocery markets, we revisit how groceries get to the doorstep in the digital-shopping “place order online” era.

The way in which the USDA Census of Agriculture counts farmers has transformed over time, limiting comparisons between years. Changes to the 2017 Census could be wrongly interpreted to suggest a significant increase in the number of women farmers and principal women farmers. We explain these changes, the caveats needed, and suggestions for more accurate comparisons.

To identify hard-to-count places, the U.S. Census Bureau has computed low response scores using 25 sociodemographic variables. However, rurality of survey areas was not considered. We find that non-metro counties have lower response rates and that the influence of sociodemographic factors on census responses differs between metro and non-metro counties.

Miscounts and undercounts in the census result in a social equity problem that negatively affects communities. An accurate census leads to representative leadership, accurate fund distribution, and informed decision making. A reliable census establishes a solid foundation for fair, equitable, and prudent allocation of community resources in the next decade.
