It is well known that between other non-linear loads the IT and office equipment or measuring equipment are important sources of current harmonics. There are particular cases when equipment of this type are supplied through isolation transformers such as equipment dedicated for interface between a high voltage laboratory and its control room or medical equipment. In the first step it was analyzed the influence of voltage level upon current harmonic content in the case of desktop computers and cathode ray tube monitors directly connected to the network. The main parameters were recorded using a professional power quality analyzer. The effect of an isolation transformer used to supply the same consumers was then evaluated. In particular situations, the use of isolation transformer diminishes the current harmonics injected in the supply network.

A novel method based on the cloud model for the superposition of the distributed random power harmonics is presented in this paper. Three characteristic quantities (Ex, En and He) of the measured harmonic phasors are calculated by the cloud model inverse generator. The probability density function described by the cloud model is presented to obtain the 95% probability value of the harmonics. Field tests results prove that the presented method has a good performance even with small volume of samples, which does not need the particular probability distribution of each random phasor.

The paper deals with the analysis of energy consumption and power quality in wastewater treatment plants, during the operation of air blowers optimized for monitoring the level of oxygen in the bioreactor. The airblowers' consumption is over 68% in energy consumption of wastewater treatment plant. This consumption optimization was done using sensors of the level of oxygen in the bioreactor that partial closure for command of airblowers, maintaining oxygen levels between 1.5 and 2.5%. By closing the discharge of airblowers it reduce the air flow, the rotation frequency of airblower and its consumption. The current absorbed during the operation of these airblowers shows important harmonics.

This paper presents hybrid power filter (HPF) performance evaluation procedure by applying special simulation hardware for digital real-time power system simulation (RTDS). RTDS simulator enables real-time calculation of electromagnetic phenomena with calculation time step of even 1-2 μs. Special hardware makes possible of importing and exporting of electrical signals from the simulator to external equipment and therefore so called hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing. Such simulations provide an insight in the equipment behaviour and also the influence of this equipment to system operation. In this paper a combination of a three-phase, two-level, voltage-source converter connected in parallel with the inductor of a shunt, single-tuned, passive filter is tested. To control the active part, a proportional-resonant (PR), multi-loop controller is used. The testing has shown a remarkable usefulness of the RTDS simulator for determination of actual electrical system equipment behaviour in various system conditions.

The scope of this study is two fold: first, it advocates the recognition of the 60/50 Hz, positive-sequence reactive power as the significant reactive power component of apparent power. This nonactive component must be monitored in the same way that the 60/50 Hz active power is monitored under nonsinusoidal conditions. Secondly, this paper documents the fact that instrumentation used today for reactive power measurement is marred by a significant difference between the indicated reactive power and the correct 60/50 Hz reactive power. Regrettably, such instrumentation is still favored by many utilities, instrumentation manufacturers and supervisors of energy markets. This paper documents a wide spectrum of situations that shed light on the discrepancies between the correct value of the reactive power and the measured value.

Due to several reasons current source inverters (CSI) are seldom used compared to the voltage source inverter (VSI) principle. On the one hand they need reverse blocking semiconductors, on the other hand their DC-link element is an inductor. Furthermore the topology is affected by the unavoidable resonant behaviour of its output network because of the necessary output capacitors. Until now all efforts to avoid the excitation of this resonance were switching scheme based. This paper provides the time domain solution for a twelve-pulse topology that is by its principle able to avoid the lowest order harmonics and can therefore be operated with every switching scheme, even fundamental frequency ones.

The smart grids paradigm includes newly defined real time control strategies, and therefore detailed models for the energy transfer are required together with new algorithms for information retrieval. Although today measurement infrastructure (including the high reporting rate measurement devices, like Phasor Measurement Units) is capable to give insight to such details, the measurement information has to be structured in a new way. Moreover, new quantities - like rate of change of frequency - rocof - become relevant for both monitoring and control purposes. Presently there are in use aggregation algorithms inherited from power quality standards like the IEC 61000-4-30 set, but no algorithm is yet specified for rocof reporting. In this paper is presented a discussion of the time- and space- aggregation of frequency (including its rate of change) using phasor data concentrators' framework.

The paper describes methods and techniques of synchronized space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM), providing symmetry (quarter-wave symmetry and/or half-wave symmetry) of the output voltage waveforms of modulated voltage source inverters for adjustable speed drives. In this case spectra of symmetrical output voltage of inverters do not contain subharmonics (of the fundamental frequency), which are very undesirable in motor drives, especially in systems with low switching frequency of inverters. Both standard approach and novel space-vector-based approach can be used for elaboration of algorithms of synchronized modulation of drive inverters. It has been shown, that novel methods and techniques of synchronized PWM provide symmetry of the output voltage of inverters (and cancellation of subharmonics from voltage spectra) at both undermodulation and overmodulation control modes of drive inverters, and for any ratio (integer or fractional) between the switching frequency and fundamental frequency.
