SEASONAL CHANGES IN BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE SAND CRAB EMERITA HOLTHUISI SANKOLLI (DECAPODA ANOMURA) 十足沙蟹生化成分的季节变化

SUMMARY 1. The changes in the biochemical constituents of the soft body tissues and hepatopancreas of Emerita holthuisi Sankolli (Decapoda Anomura) were studied at monthly intervals for 1 year to determine their variability in the course of the reproductive cycle. 2. The water content remained at a high level during the monsoon season i.e. from July to September. It was at moderate level from October to January followed by a slight decrease during the period from February to June. 3. Protein, glycogen and fat of hepatopancreas were correlated with reproductive activity. During ripening of the gonads protein, glycogen and fat of the soft body parts and the hepatopancreas were increased. During the intensive spawning period all values fell considerably reaching minimum values at the end of the spawning period.

ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE URINARY BLADDER OF SALAMANDRA SALAMANDRA (L.) (AMPHIBIA CAUDATA) 尾两栖类蝾螈膀胱的超微结构

SUMMARY The mucosa of the urinary bladder of Salamandra salamandra (L.) (Amphibia Caudata) was studied by electron microscopy. Its epithelium basically consists of three cell types: (i) «granular cells» which are flattened and characterized by a layer of granules of mucous secretion, by abundant filamentous material and by occasionally anomalous mitochondria, while their free surface shows many microvilli and a distinct fuzzy coat; (ii) «mitochondria-rich cells», with a typical flask shape and abundance of mitochondria; (iii) rare basal cells. The epithelial cells are connected by typical junctions, adjacent membranes exhibiting deep infoldings. Thus in the urinary bladder of an urodele amphibian, as previously observed in anuran amphibians, it has been possible to demonstrate the presence of structural devices which can be related to water and ion resorption.

THE EYESPOT MEMBRANES OF HAEMATOCOCCUS PLUVIALIS FLOTOW (CHLOROPHYCEAE): THEIR ULTRASTRUCTURE AND POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANCE IN PHOTOTAXIS 雨红球菌流状眼斑膜的超微结构及其趋光性意义

SUMMARY The eyespot region of the green flagellate alga Haematococcus pluvialis Flotow (Clorophyceae) was investigated by electron microscopy in order to identify any possible specialization of the plasmalemma and the outer chloroplast envelope membrane connected with photoreception. In this alga, the distance between the outer chloroplast membrane and the plasmalemma in the eyespot region is variable. In some thin sections in this region, the inner limiting membrane of the chloroplast is more electron dense than the outer, while the thickness of the plasmalemma opposite the eyespot shows no appreciable difference with respect to other parts of the cell. The possible functional significance of these findings and the possibility that the eyespot in Haematococcus pluvialis serves as a shading device are both discussed.

SUMMARY The development of the end apparatus and excretory duct is described in the Van der Vecht glands of Polistes gallicus (L.) (Hymenoptera Vespidae). The precocious gland buds consist of clusters of three blastocytes wrapped round each other. The external cell represents the prospective secretory cell, and the inner ones the accessory (or ductular) cells. Numerous cytoplasmatic processes emanate from the apical surface of the external blastocyte: microvilli and a long axonemal structure, which act as moulds in the synthetic processes of the cuticular end apparatus and excretory duct respectively. These processes are performed by the prospective secretory cells (end apparatus) and accessory cells (excretory duct). The above findings are discussed and compared with the current morphogenesis patterns concerning the development of the secretion collection and release complex in the exocrine glands of Arthropoda. The fundamental role of cytoplasmic outgrowths during their development is emphasized.

SUMMARY The parental aggression of female mice (Mus domesticus Rutty) towards strange conspecifics known to vary in their tendency to commit infanticide was examined. Twenty-four hours after stud males removal, resident lactating females (with pups aged 3–5 days) were confronted with the following types of intruders: the reintroduced stud, i.e. the father of the pups, a strange father, sexually naive and recently sexually experienced (24 hr prior testing) males, virgin females. Parental attack was mainly elicited by sexually naive and recently sexually experienced males which were also most likely to kill and cannibalize pups. The stud males did not show infanticide and were never attacked. Remarkably, strange fathers were rarely attacked by lactating females and they rarely killed unrelated pups. The data seem to support the view that lactating female mice might be capable of assessing the infanticidal potential of conspecific intruders and of adopting the most appropriate behavioural strategy. SUMMARY Description of a new Somali (Afgoi: 02°06'N-45°11'E) Elapsoidea with small (in adult) and strongly depressed head, obtusely pointed snout, grey chin region, vertical diameter of the eye greater than its distance from the upper lip, juvenile with white head and without transverse bands: Elapsoidea chelazzii n. sp. (Serpentes Elapidae). The genus is new to Somalia.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS The comparative study of the populations of Sphaeroma senatum of the Isle of Capri and of Immacolatella Vecchia (Naples) has yielded the following results: 1. Sphaeroma capreae Verhoeff was not found to be a valid species and the following synonymy is therefore proposed: Sphaeroma capreae Verhoeff, 1941 = Sphaeroma senatum (Fa- bricius, 1787), n. syn. 2. As compared to the Neaples population, that of Capri showed—in our laboratory conditions—a lower fecundity, a longer period of gestation and post-embryonic development. The hybrids were found to be mostly intermediate for the same characteristics. 3. Significant differences exist in the morphology of the two populations (shape of the male pleopod II endopodite and length and curvature of appendix masculina) and in the extent of variability in colour and pattern.

SUMMARY Information concerning the thigh myology, osteology of the skull and postcranial skeleton, external morphology and life history of two high elevation Ethiopian bufonids, one of which was previously known as Bufo osgoodi Loveridge, 1932, is presented and analysed and a comparison made with all the species currently assigned to Nectophrynoides Noble, 1926, with the exception of N. minutus Perret, 1972 of which no examples were available. The genus Nectophrynoides is redefined according to 25 characters and Bufo osgoodi transferred to it. The other Ethiopian form, which has inguinal amplexus, internal fertilisation and a terrestrial tadpole lacking larval mouthparts, is described as a new species (Nectophrynoides malcolmi). Reference is made to the morphological characteristics of other genera of bufonids.

MAGNETS AND PIGEON ORIENTATION 磁铁和鸽子定向

SUMMARY Two experiments of KEETON (1971), which aimed at verifying the effect of magnetic stimuli perceived during flight on the orientation of homing pigeons, had left some open questions, in particular the very small effect on homing performance, even when there was a considerable disturbance of initial orientation. These experiments were repeated using more rigorous methods. Adult pigeons equipped with bar magnets showed a complete initial disorientation when released under overcast skies. However, contrary to the findings reported by KEETON, the same magnets had no effect when the releases were performed in sunny conditions, even when 3-month-old inexperienced pigeons were used. Homing performance was not influenced in an appreciable way, even though, in three out of four experiments carried out when the sun was not visible, the total cloud cover extended over a wide area and lasted for a long time so excluding the use of the sun compass for the greater part of the homing flights.
