High-resolution spectral hole burning studies in self-assembled CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots reveal a sharp zero-phonon line as well as contributions due to acoustic phonon- and optical phonon-assisted transitions. Zero-phonon linewidth of a few /spl mu/eV is obtained.

We generate femtosecond, non-frequency shifted solitons with peak powers greater than 5 MW in a Xe-filled, hollow-core photonic band-gap fiber. This represents, to our knowledge, the first observation of temporal solitons with no self-frequency shift.

We experimentally observe diffusive wave propagation in disordered two-dimensional arrays of interacting optical fibers. A weak Kerr nonlinearity can cause an increased mobility, where strong nonlinearity leads to the formation of discrete solitons.

Resonant photonic bandgap structures, formed by Bragg-spaced quantum wells, are studied experimentally with resonant pump-probe spectroscopy. We find ultrafast suppression due to the ac Stark effect and ultrafast recovery enabled by superradiant decay of the coherent polarization.

The near cutoff behaviors of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from molecular gases is investigated. Results reveal that harmonic cutoff is extended only for molecules that show ionization suppression. Another interesting result is that the HHG intensity drops slower in N/sub 2/ and O/sub 2/, while in Ar there is a sharp drop at the cutoff. This phenomena could be induced by the molecule orientation in the laser field.

We report an entanglement extraction scheme in which polarization-entangled photons are generated in ultrafast type-II SPDC without the need for spectral filters. High-quality polarization entanglement is possible, regardless of pump pulse duration or crystal thickness.

We focused a 38 fs laser pulse, which is spatially filtered, into a glass cell containing a very dilute solution of coumarin 440 in methanol. Via three photons fluorescence of coumarin, up to 6 re-focusing filaments were observed along one straight line. This is the first evidence showing a way to control multiple filamentation.
