Optical orientation of spin-polarized heavy and light holes followed by relaxation to other valence subband states has been observed unambiguously in undoped bulk GaAs. The spin relaxation time for the heavy holes is 110 fs /spl plusmn/ 10%.

The angle dependent diffraction efficiency of 2D photonic crystals is measured to be lower than 5/spl middot/10-4 for certain frequencies and unity spectrally nearby in good agreement with numerical calculations, whereby the surface termination is crucial.

Coherent vibrational motions along intermolecular hydrogen bonds are observed in mid-infrared pump-probe and photon echo experiments. The underlying low-frequency modes couple anharmonically to the O-H stretching mode and dephase much slower than the O-H stretching mode.

We demonstrate that single living cells and single organelles within a cell can be manipulated with a near-infrared beam and Raman spectra of the trapped particles can be collected to offer biochemical composition for rapid identification of microorganisms and real-time analysis.

A new selective excitation technique using a superposition of two identical frequency-chirped pulses is demonstrated. By adjusting the time delay between the two pulses, a selected transition of the Rb doublet was brought into the "holes" of the interference pattern and remained nonexcited, thus allowing to manipulate another transition by the laser field as if it is an isolated two-level system.

We investigate the interference between virtual and real population amplitudes in a dense potassium vapor using transient four-wave mixing with shaped pulses. Results for the D/sub 1/ line agree with theory, but D/sub 2/ results behave anomalously.
