Quantum process tomography allows complete and precise characterization of a quantum operation. We report quantum process tomography of unitary, decohering, and partially polarizing operations using single-qubit, maximally entangled, and non-entangled input states.

Using a broadband femtosecond laser and simple optics, we demonstrate narrow-bandwidth tunable selective vibrational excitation in liquids. The resolution obtained is 80 times higher than the laser bandwidth-the highest obtained from a femtosecond laser to date.

Thulium-doped glass is cooled 24 K below ambient by arranging a Brewster-cut sample in a multiple-pass pump geometry. Modelling based on new spectroscopy data predicts the feasibility of achieving cryogenic temperatures.

High efficiency single-photon detectors are needed for many applications including quantum cryptography and linear-optics quantum computing. We present experimental results showing improved detection efficiency of silicon avalanche photodiodes by reducing reflective losses.

We report measurements of the cubic optical susceptibility of copper at the interband transition threshold. Both real and imaginary parts of the susceptibility are determined from nonlinear transmission and reflection experiments with a copper/silica composite sample irradiated by picosecond laser pulses.

In NdSc/sub 3/(BO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ random laser, we experimentally studied the dependence of the threshold, slope efficiency, and effective photon residence time on the size of powder particles. Optimum lasing conditions are found at medium particle sizes.

We observe superluminal light propagation in an alexandrite crystal. Negative group velocities result from a narrow anti-hole in the homogeneously broadened absorption spectrum. The anti-hole is formed by coherent population oscillations in an inverse-saturable absorber.
