In Morocco, the radiation protection of patients undergoing medical imaging examinations using ionizing radiation sources is now governed by specific provisions of Chapter VII of Law no142-12 (Loi no142-12 – AMSSNuR, 2015). The principle of justification of procedures and the principle of optimization of doses delivered constitute the basis of the legislation governing medical exposure. DRLs are considered as an important optimization tool encouraging healthcare professionals to optimize their practice and assure a better patient safety. In this survey, Local Diagnostic Reference Levels (LDRLs) were established for the eight most frequent examinations in Morocco. Data from 1747 patients were collected from seven regional hospitals. The proposed LDRLs were defined as the 75th percentile of the mean entrance surface dose distribution (ESD) in mGy using the indirect dosimetry method according to the IAEA Report Series No. 457. The LDRLs values reported in this study were for the eight examinations: skull (PA) 2.8 mGy, chest (PA) 0.51 mGy, abdomen (AP) 7.6 mGy, pelvis (AP) 6.45 mGy, lumbar (AP) 7.8 mGy, lumbar (Lat) 10.7 mGy, cervical (AP) 2.2 mGy, and cervical (Lat) 2.4 mGy. The DRLs reported in Morocco were compared with those of international authorities and other countries: IRSN (France), NRPB (UK), Japan, Sudan, and Iran. The present work assesses the local DRLs in Morocco and constitutes a starting point that will provide professionals with a tool to help them optimize the doses delivered to patients. Furthermore, the definition of national DRLs by radiography is an essential step in the process of optimizing medical exposures.

Anthropomorphic phantoms, which can provide equivalent human tissue densities, are one of the best solutions for verifying the quality of radiotherapy treatment plans produced by treatment planning systems. The goal of this work was to develop and fabricate a breast phantom to estimate radiation doses to the breast, lung, and surface using radiochromic films (EBT3) for basically two techniques of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) treatment planning. Thirty-two acrylic slices were used to construct the phantom. Cork and Teflon were used to mimic the lung and bone, respectively. Four slots were drilled for dosimetry purposes to allow access to the areas of ionization chamber installation. Both wedged and open of two tangential beams techniques were applied. With a mean deviation of 1.02 ± 1.1, the variation between estimated point doses and measurements using the three ionization chambers ranged from 2.9 to 1.4%. Using 0, 5 and 10 mm boluses, the mean percentage doses on the target surface were 54.7, 88.6 and 91.7% of the prescribed dose (PD), respectively. The homemade phantom was appropriate for conducting quality control (QC) tests for 3D-CRT planning techniques for breast radiotherapy.

Exposure of people to external ionizing radiation is controlled by time, distance and shielding. In the latter case, the radiation dose is reduced if shielding attenuates the radiation. The present study was aimed at comparing gamma-ray shielding calculation methods, the well-known trial-and-error method and a direct calculation method that make use of build-up factor’s empirical fitting formulas. The latter method was then applied to a practical case in gamma industrial radiography. The results showed that both methods provide comparable results. For high energies and high-density materials, it has been observed that all the build-up factor forms studied provide similar values. Contrariwise, it has also been observed that the linear form of the build-up factor seemed to underestimate shielding thickness for low gamma energies (lower than ≈ 1 MeV). Furthermore, the application of the method using empirical build-up factor functions to a practical case in gamma industrial radiography showed that the calculations are in agreement with the measurements carried out on the field. This demonstrates that this method is efficient and can still be used even though more sophisticated and accurate methods are now available.

The pandemic situation, originated due to the appearance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, changed many aspects of our lives and jobs. This health crisis also affected the day-to-day work of radiation protection experts, including the wide range of areas involved in this sector. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of this pandemic on the Spanish radiation protection experts. For that purpose, a Google Forms online survey was developed with 39 questions. The survey covered different aspects related to the work developed by the Spanish professionals, taking into account three different time periods along the pandemic situation. According to this survey, the appearance of COVID-19 modified the labour conditions and modalities of many Spanish radiation protection professionals, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. Most on-site activities were related to the health sector and the nuclear industry, other sectors were more flexible, and the workload increased for half of the surveyed participants. Many operational activities suffered delays due to the pandemic, whereas the one-month wearing period of passive personal dosimeters was extended in most cases during the first Spanish alarm state (15th March 2020 up to the 21st June 2020). Finally, difficulties faced in terms of the working area have been identified and may be useful for the future.

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has been a central pillar of the European H2020 research framework. A social lab organized within the European project NewHoRRIzon explored ways to stimulate further integration of RRI principles (public engagement, open access, gender, ethics, science education) in the nuclear research. Under the title “Nuclear Dating”, a pilot action was designed in this lab with the aim of creating awareness of RRI among Early Career Researchers, providing a venue for experimenting interdisciplinary collaborations and stimulating their reflexivity to the wider social, ethical, and environmental issues surrounding their research. Through a joint effort of organizers and participants, this paper shares insights from this first of a kind event in the nuclear R&D landscape.

This study proposes a quick, easy, and low-cost method that can be used to assess the radiological safety of an irradiation line used for cargo and container inspection facilities. The radiation-emitting equipment used was a Smiths Heimam particle accelerator model HCVP4029 operating at 4.5 MeV. The radiation dose measurements were performed using a personal radiation monitor Ultra Radac mod MRAD 111 (Geiger–Muller). The ambient equivalent dose H*(10) was estimated for two facilities: A (real) (1.12E-03 mSv per scan) and B (fictitious) (3.25E-03 mSv per scan). The dimensionless factor R, which represents a ratio between two specific scanning (Ss) quantities regarding the facilities A and B, is introduced as a reference for assessing the level of radiological safety. This study compares facilities A and B by using a simple alternative safety assessment based on the R factor. The dimensionless R-value appears to be able to facilitate both the personnel’s and the general public’s perception of risk levels, even with no fixed scale.

Eyes can be exposed to very small and bright light sources during occupational time, such as LEDs, welding arcs and lasers. Such light sources produce an accident-generating glare. In addition, the blue part of their spectrum and their high radiance make the operator’s retina at risk for the blue-light hazard. Filters protecting workers eyes tend to make lose the perception of the environment and task, and coloured protective glasses prevent from visible laser hazards but impair seeing alignment spots. An Augmented Reality system was investigated as a widespread and low-cost way to protect the operator’s eyes without impairing environment perception. It is made using a Virtual Reality helmet holding a smartphone, whose camera replaces the operator’s eyes. Real-time image processing allows operators to work safely on LEDs in operation, welding arcs and lasers. The user can see what he/she is doing while avoiding occupational exposure and glare. With visual ergonomics in mind, this system proves to be a potentially useful type of personal protective equipment against such bright light sources. In addition, it offers the ability to detect very near infrared laser spots.

The Round-Table project in Kashiwa: a dialogue to reconcile consumers and farmers in the Tokyo suburbs after the Fukushima accident

This paper describes the practice of dialogue between various stakeholders at the Round-Table project in Kashiwa, a radiation hotspot in the Tokyo suburbs after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, where the author played a central role. Kashiwa is both a dormitory town and an important production area for some vegetables, but its residents coming from different regions of Japan and working in Tokyo are not particularly attached to the area, so the dialogue and stakeholder involvement in Kashiwa faced different difficulties than those in Fukushima Prefecture. In this context, after months of deliberate discussions, the Round-Table decided on independent standard value and a protocol for measuring individual farmer’s vegetables and farmland soil. As a result of this optimization process, the farmers who participated in the Round-Table became involved in radiation protection as an extension of their ordinary marketing activities. This paper examines the achievements and failures of the “Eat and Support” campaign in Japan, and discusses the significance of the marketing concept in radiation protection and the strategy of extending trust from a small circle of producers and customers, based on the experience of Kashiwa.

Occupational exposure of radiation workers, including nurses, is an important issue that should always be considered. However, there are limited reports on external exposure of nurses working in nuclear medicine investigated using a personal dosimeter with a trend function. We investigated the relationship between the personal dose equivalent and behavior of nurses in nuclear medicine using a personal dosimeter with a trend function. It was found that the external exposure of nurses was high when they cleaned hospital rooms where patients who received radiopharmaceutical drugs were admitted. However, none of the nurses surveyed exceeded 3μ. Visualization of the contamination in the hospital room showed that the area around the sink and trash can was particularly contaminated. Hence, nurses need to be more careful when cleaning. Although it is unlikely that the nurses surveyed will be affected by external exposure, data in this report is valuable for nurses at medical institutions to consider work hours and personnel strategies.
