This is an effectively comprehensive book about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), with 20 chapters about different issues such as language (assessment, therapy, non-linguistic behavior and prosody and reading abilities), family (maternal stress, parents’ coping and quality of life), cross-cultural varia -tions (second language, reality in places as Iran and Africa), sleeping disorders, sexual abuse, creativity, employment issues, moral issues, criminal legislation, financial aspects, experimental research, sensorial motor development, education and transition to adulthood.Each one of these issues is discussed by a researcher of the field that has expertise in the specific area but that is not necessarily involved in a reference research center. Therefo-re there are American, French, Italian, Australian, Belgian, Spanish, Israeli and Brazilian authors; but there are also Chinese, Turkish, Japanese, Irish, Nigerian, Polish, Iranian and Croatian authors.This configuration allows not only a comprehensive perspective about several aspects related to the ASD but also the identification of common problems that may have shared solutions.A study conducted in Europe, for example, suggests se-veral strategies to help parents increase their participation in the intervention processes directed towards their children that can be applied with Brazilian families with the need of very few adaptations.The assessment of issues regarding the quality of life and health of parents of ASD children in Croatia led the authors to conclude about the need of a program to monitor ASD parents’ health. This aspect has been neglected in most developed coun -tries and certainly deserves consideration also in our reality.However, what is really innovative in this book is its characteristic of Open Access. It means that any person may obtain the whole book from the publisher’s website (www.intechopen.com) without any cost. There are many titles in this website about this field and many others. The publishing process is very careful, all material undergoes a scientific review and several revisions and the acquisition of a printed version is possible. But what is meaningful is the possibility available to all, students and professionals, to easily access the scientific development, with no cost.It may transform the responsibility for the professional practice, especially in situations such as the Brazilian reality. The issue of geographic distance between reference centers has one more barrier breeched. If some years ago the open access to journals through systems such as SciELO eliminated this problem in what refer to scientific papers, it now is true also in what refer to books, the choice of a great number of speech-language pathologists and audiologists (SLP-A) to obtain information about scientific recent developments.In what refer to the AS this process is fundamental. PURPOSE: To compare the performance of Brazilian elderly patients living in a long-term care facility on the 100 ml water swallowing test with the results obtained with British elderly. METHODS: Eighteen elderly subjects (13 women and five men, mean age 83.46), residents in a long-term care facility and considered normal regarding the swallowing function, were selected to take part in this study. As in a British study, they were laterally observed by the examiner while swallowing 100 ml of water from a plastic cup. The examiner observed the number of sips, the time taken, and complications during the test, which generated the following indices: volume per swallow (ml), time per swallow (s), and swallowing capacity (ml/s). RESULTS: The elderly men had lower swallowing capacity than the women in the research, oppositely from the original British study. The mean time per swallow and the mean volume per swallow were similar for both genders. CONCLUSION: The swallowing capacity in elderly subjects is lower than that of normal adults, suggesting slowing in the deglutition process. The difference between genders reported in the original study was not found in the present study; however, our sample was older.

The aim of this study was to describe the speech-language pathology aspects of auditory processing, reading and writing of a male patient diagnosed with Silver-Russell syndrome. With two months of age the patient presented weight-for-height deficit; broad forehead; small, prominent and low-set ears; high palate; discrete micrognathia; blue sclera; cafe-au-lait spots; overlapping of the first and second right toes; gastroesophageal reflux; high-pitched voice and cry; mild neuropsychomotor development delay; and difficulty to gain weight, receiving the diagnosis of the syndrome. In the psychological evaluation, conducted when he was 8 years old, the patient presented normal intellectual level, with cognitive difficulties involving sustained attention, concentration, immediate verbal memory, and emotional and behavioral processes. For an assessment of reading and writing and their underlying processes, carried out at age 9, the following tests were used: Reading Comprehension of Expository Texts, Phonological Abilities Profile, Auditory Discrimination Test, spontaneous writing, Scholastic Performance Test (SPT), Rapid Automatized Naming Test (RANT), and phonological working memory. He showed difficulties in all tests, with scores below expected for his age. In the auditory processing assessment, monotic, diotic and dichotic tests were conducted. Altered results were found for sustained and selective auditory attention abilities, sequencial memory for verbal and non-verbal sounds, and temporal resolution. It can be concluded that the patient presents alterations in the learning of reading and writing that might be secondary to the Silver-Russell syndrome, however, these difficulties can also be due to deficits in auditory processing abilities.

PURPOSE: To verify and compare the occurrence of repair strategies used in the fricative consonants of Brazilian Portuguese, and to analyze the strategies applied for each fricative according to the severity of phonological disorders. METHODS: Participants were 87 subjects of both genders, with ages between 4 years and 8 years and 11 months. All children used repair strategies involving at least one of the fricative consonants (/f/, /v/, /s/, /z/, , ), with minimal occurrence of 40%. Data are from the phonological assessments conducted before phonological therapy, and the severity of phonological disorders was determined by the Percentage of Consonants Correct - Revised. Data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: There was progression in the use of repair strategies according to the production complexity of the phoneme. Repair strategies were found in all severities of phonological disorders, and the strategies that most affect speech intelligibility were found in more severe degrees. CONCLUSION: The more complex the fricative, the more repair strategies are used, and the more severe the phonological disorder, the more occurrences these strategies have.

PURPOSE: To investigate the existence of exhibitions and displays on topics related to Human Communication in national and international interactive science museums, and analyze the content to determine what are the issues related to Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology discussed in the museums. METHODS: Website analysis of 40 international science and/or technology museums and 20 national museums to identify exhibitions or displays related to the theme "Human Communication". RESULTS: Most of the researched museums have exhibitions or displays related to Human Communication. Among the national museums only four have an entire exhibition related to the topic, and among the international museums, thirteen exhibitions were found. The number of international exhibitions is greater than the number identified in national museums, and the quality of the material also varies. The primarily discussed topic in museums is acoustics, followed by message reception by hearing sense. Most museums do not approach the topics of message production, language, and voice anatomy and physiology. CONCLUSION: Science museums address basic sciences and, for this reason, acoustics is much explored. Many exhibits were found on topics related to Human Communication that allow individuals to learn about how the human body works, arousing curiosity about the subject. Because museums are institutions of science communication and informal education that contribute to the population's scientific literacy, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology can take advantage of these spaces to disseminate research and knowledge about Human Communication.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of two types of visual stimuli in the written production of deaf signers with complaints of reading and writing alterations. METHODS: Participants were 13 deaf students who were users of sign language and had complaints of reading and writing alterations (seven male and six female). Subjects' mean age was 13 years, and they presented severe or profound sensorineural hearing loss (average threshold lower than 71 dBHL in the frequencies of 500 Hz, 1 and 2 kHz). The educational level of participants ranged from 3rd to 8th grades of public and private elementary schools. They were evaluated for their performance in Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), and carried out written productions based on two visual stimuli: an action picture and a sequence of pictures. The written samples were analyzed according to criteria adapted from the Communicative Competence Theory (Generic, Encyclopedic and Linguistic). Data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Regarding the Generic Competence, the predominant type of discourse was Narration. Both Linguistic and Encyclopedic competences were impaired, regardless the stimuli used. CONCLUSION: Both types of visual stimuli used in the study did not provide differentiated written productions in deaf signers with complaints of writing alteration.

METHODS: Participants were 13 deaf students who were users of sign language and had complaints of reading and writing alterations (seven male and six female). Subjects' mean age was 13 years, and they presented severe or profound sensorineural hearing loss (average threshold lower than 71 dBHL in the frequencies of 500 Hz, 1 and 2 kHz). The educational level of participants ranged from 3rd to 8th grades of public and private elementary schools. They were evaluated for their performance in Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), and carried out written productions based on two visual stimuli: an action picture and a sequence of pictures. The written samples were analyzed according to criteria adapted from the Communicative Competence Theory (Generic, Encyclopedic and Linguistic). Data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Regarding the Generic Competence, the predominant type of discourse was Narration. Both Linguistic and Encyclopedic competences were impaired, regardless the stimuli used. CONCLUSION: Both types of visual stimuli used in the study did not provide differentiated written productions in deaf signers with complaints of writing alteration.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"34-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67594384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this case report was to investigate the meaning attributed to the voice and its practice in the classroom by teachers specialized in the field of visual impairment. Participants were eight teachers, divided into three groups: four sighted teachers, two teachers with low vision, and two blind teachers. Each subject was interviewed individually, answering six semi-directed questions which were previously prepared, about the communication between the specialized teacher and visually impaired students in the classroom environment. After the interviews were transcribed and analyzed, the answers yielded three categories: the teacher's work, daily experiences, and necessary support. The educational approach is based on the principles of providing all possible details and information about the content, adapting supplies, providing guidance with regards to mobility, among others, using body and vocal resources. The importance of the voice for the development of a visually impaired person was explicit in the reports which consider it essential so that this individual can coexist in his social and educational context. It was observed the importance of classroom interaction, favored by body and vocal resources, both for teachers and students, in order to provide a clearer and more objective communication. The meaning attributed to the voice by the participants contributed to its recognition as the main mean of communication between teacher and students.
