PURPOSE: To validate the Vocal Performance Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: The guidelines of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Medical Outcomes Trust - SAC were followed. Initially, aspects of conceptual model and measurement, reliability, validity, sensitivity, interpretability, and demand of management and response were analyzed. The questionnaire was translated and back translated by two speech-language pathologists fluent in English. The versions were compared and the Portuguese version of the questionnaire, denominated Questionario de Performance Vocal - QPV, was generated. The QPV was administered to 325 people, 160 with vocal complaints and 165 ones without vocal complaints, with similar distribution of gender and age. The scores of both groups were calculated and compared, and the questionnaire was administered again to 39 dysphonic participants, to determine its reliability and test-retest reproducibility. A 95% confidence interval was adopted. RESULTS: All 12 questions were maintained, and the questionnaire presented reliable psychometric measures of validity, reliability and reproducibility, and sensitivity. CONCLUSION: The Brazilian version of the VPQ, the Questionario de Performance Vocal - QPV, is a reliable and valid protocol, sensitive to changes, easy to use and calculate the results, and may be an important instrument to compose the speech-language pathology assessment of dysphonic patients.

The aim of this study was to review relevant studies about language comprehension deficits observed in children and adolescents with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Comprehensive databases were accessed in order to obtain relevant papers published in the last two decades. Literature shows that this clinical group may present important oral comprehension difficulties, which may be explained by either lack of linguistic knowledge or inefficient higher-order linguistic processing operations. As children with SLI develop, they improve comprehension abilities. However, deficits are still verified during adolescence. Therefore, early diagnosis of comprehension deficits is essential for effective intervention. Extensive literature reveals the effectiveness of many speech-language therapy techniques.

Health literacy has been studied in several areas, but little discussed in the field of speech-language therapy. In general, the studies include intrinsic factors to the individual, environment and relationship between client and health professional**. In terms of individual factors, patients with communication disorders face greater challenges when they need to apply literacy skills in health, suggesting that the speech-language therapist should be particularly concerned about the health literacy of their clients. In terms of contextual factors, cultural and linguistic barriers and the client’s religious beliefs can determine if the changes needed for health promotion will be held. Relative to the relationship between client and speech-language therapist, if the customer feels inferior in the relationship, he will tend to have a passive attitude in the therapeutic process and will not ask the questions necessary for the understanding of care. According to the authors, the socio-cultural characteristics of South Africa and dialectal variation difficult the widespread of health information and interfere with the relationship between therapist and patient. In conformity with the literature, is consensus among health professionals of the region to provide written information to clients in order to assisting them to manage their own health after the consultations. In this surrounding context, the authors state that there are strategies of high and low technology to promote patient adherence to treatment and to improve understanding of the process. To supplement the reader’s understanding, they have provided in the appendices a framework with advantages and disadvantages of each strategy, including detailed explanations and demonstrations during the sessions; review of clinical information during the sessions and after consultations; illustrations; support for the family during the therapeutic process; telephone contact and intensive modules with reduced short-term goals. It is best to use them in combination for the authors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the issues around health literacy and the recall of health information from clients who have undergone speech-language therapy in public health units in Cape Town and also how can these issues be overcome, focusing on clients with dysphagia, voice disorders (including laryngectomy) and cleft lip and/or palate. The authors conducted an exploratory study with a focus on speech-language therapist and their clients who had received treatment during the six months prior to data collection. They were recruited from two hospitals of the public health system of Cape Town in South Africa. Data were collected through four focus groups discussions and qualitatively analysed. PURPOSE: To evaluate hearing limitations among elderly individuals with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss according to the variables educational level and degree of hearing loss, using the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit self-assessment questionnaire. METHODS: The questionnaire was applied to 30 elderly subjects before and after three months of use of amplification. The sample was composed of 60% females and 40% males, with mean age of 71.6 years. Educational level was divided into three categories: illiterate, elementary school, and high school education. Data were analyzed statistically. Scores were compared by subscale and an overall assessment was conducted by subtracting these scores. Moreover, it was calculated the association between benefit and educational level and degree of hearing loss. RESULTS: The comparative study between scores obtained in the questionnaire with and without hearing aid revealed difference in the subscales Ease of Communication, Reverberation and Background Noise, with values p<0.001. In the Aversion to Sounds subscale, it was observed a decline with amplification. Performance improved with the hearing aid in the overall evaluation for all three subscales. There was no association between benefits obtained with the hearing aid, educational level, and degree of hearing loss. CONCLUSION: Benefits were reported in the subscales: Ease of Communication, Reverberation, and Background Noise. No association was found between benefits, educational level and degree of hearing loss. The benefit obtained in the Background Noise subscale is smaller than that observed in Reverberation and Ease of Communication.

In order to understand the relationship between gestures and language and the relevance of gestures in the development of communicative and linguistic skills, a review of national and international literature was conducted. The analysis of data from multiple areas of science indicates the cross-influences of gesture in the evolution of the communicative competence of Humankind. The identification of the human mirror system created the background for studies that generated hypotheses about the parallelism between the evolution of gesture versus the evolution of language. Literature indicates that the use of gestures has a predictive power in language development, and different periods of language development influence the components of pragmatics, semantics and morphosyntax. The influence of natural gesture for communicative competence continues throughout life, since co-speech gestures have the purpose to disambiguate the content of the message to the interlocutor and to organize verbal reasoning for the speaker. Using natural gestures in promoting communication and linguistic skills in children with prelinguistic communication disorders has become essential, but it requires deeper knowledge as studies related to the early pragmatic skills are mainly directed towards the pointing gesture. Studies that analyzed other groups of gestures in older children have also contributed for understanding the use of gestures and the development of semantic and morphosyntactic competencies.

PURPOSE: To analyze the reasons for evasion of the families from the newborn hearing screening program conducted at a public hospital, and to correlate them with the demographic distribution of the families and the characteristics of the program. METHODS: Participants were 132 families, from a total of 739 contacted, whose children had been born in a maternity hospital in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from October/2003 to December/2005, and who had not showed up for the newborn hearing screening test or retest. A questionnaire regarding the causes for evasion was applied, asking information related to the newborn hearing screening, level of education and occupation of parents, and the child's hearing and language development. RESULTS: The questionnaire was applied to 132 families (17.86%); contact was not possible with the other families. From this total, 82 had not shown up in the first stage of the hearing screening (test), and 50 had not returned for retest. The most frequently provided reasons for the evasion were lack of interest and scheduling conflicts. There was no association between the reasons for the evasion and parent's education level and occupation, nor with the professional who provided orientation regarding the newborn hearing screening. Hearing alteration were not referred, as well as significant language development delay. CONCLUSION: The reasons for family evasion are independent from variables related to the family and the dynamics of the hearing screening program.
