A theoretical justification is given of the widely used method of stabilization of the output signal from a fiber-optic gyroscope with a broad-band radiation source by a Lyot depolarizer. Different variants of including a depolarizer in such a gyroscope are considered and the role of the dichroism and birefringence induced in the gyroscope system is discussed.

A four-wave interaction with feedback was used in combination with a Faraday isolator to achieve unidirectional lasing in a neodymium glass. This improved greatly the transverse structure of the radiation and ensured a divergence close to the diffraction limit. The threshold value of the input energy was 12 mJ, the maximum reflection coefficient reached 25, and the maximum output energy was 0.5 J. A linear four-wave feedback resonator was proposed and investigated. In the strong discrimination region the transverse structure of the output radiation had a near-diffraction divergence. The threshold value of the input energy was then 16 mJ, the maximum reflection coefficient was 10, and the maximum output energy reached 0.4 J.

A detailed analysis is made of transient coherent Doppler-free spectroscopy of two-photon absorption in an atomic gas. The hyperfine structure of the levels and elastic depolarizing collisions are allowed for. The analysis is used to develop a method for the determination of the time constant of relaxation of the multipole moments of atoms when such relaxation is due to radiative decay and collisions with a buffer gas. A way of determining the separation between the hyperfine structure components is demonstrated. It is shown that under conditions of excitation of the atoms the hyperfine structure of the levels can give rise to quantum beats of the density of a conjugate wave.

An experimental investigation was made of the principal properties of a multibeam projection microinterferometer with a copper-vapor image amplifier. The optical system and the operating principle of the microinterferometer are described. It is shown that the lower limit of the height of a microstructure which can be determined is less than 10 nm. If the edges of the microstructure are sharp, the upper limit can reach 5λ, where λ = 0.5782 μm is the wavelength of the radiation of the copper-vapor image amplifier.

A YAG:Nd3+ laser emitting radiation at eight frequencies in the visible range has been developed. This continuously pumped passively mode-locked laser contained an intracavity LiIO3 crystal which served both as a Raman-active medium and as an element for nonlinear frequency mixing. Processes of stimulated Raman scattering with nonlinear mixing in an LiIO crystal were analyzed. It was established that the phonon mode having the E2 symmetry (ν = 824 cm−1) and the tilted polariton vibration having the A + E1 symmetry (ν ~ 650 cm−1) are actively involved in the emission process. Continuous frequency tuning could be achieved because of the angular dispersion of the tilted polaritons.

It is shown theoretically that the optical dynamics of a system comprising a thin film of two-level atoms deposited on an insulating substrate can undergo a transition to chaos via a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations. The chaotic nature of the pulsations is supported by calculations of the Lyapunov exponent.

An analysis of an equivalent system of a resonator consisting of many tilted reflecting planes is used to calculate the distribution of the energy in the output beam. The results show that the divergence can be reduced by ensuring that the tilts of the exit and totally reflecting mirrors are small. A new type of a resonant reflector is described.

Single-mode radiation in the form of separate trains of pulses of 2.3-J energy, 5-ms duration, and an average power of 114 W was generated for the first time. The trains consisted of equidistant pulses with a peak power of 817 kW, a 140-ns duration, and a 250-μs pulse-repetition period. The time and energy parameters of the radiation could be varied within wide ranges by changing the electrical pump power.

An experimental investigation was made of the formation of a static hologram by difference-frequency beams (Ω = ω1 – ω2 = 2π 50 Hz) in an alternating external field E0 cos(Ωt) in an undoped Ba2NaNb5O15 crystal at λ = 0.63 μm (He–Ne laser). The dependence of the diffraction efficiency on the spatial frequency of the grating was studied. A qualitative agreement was achieved with theoretical results allowing for the influence of a secondary grating.
