Experimental investigation of the efficiency of phase conjugation of an XeCl laser beam by stimulated Brillouin scattering 受激布里渊散射对XeCl激光束相位共轭效率的实验研究

An experimental investigation was made of the phase conjugation of an XeCl laser beam with spectral line widths of 2 and 0.4 pm as a function of the conditions of focusing of the beam in a heptane cell. A phase conjugation efficiency higher than 90% was achieved. It was found that, apart from the stimulated Brillouin scattering (STBS) component, the scattered beam also contained a second component without a frequency shift. Their ratio depended on the geometry used to couple the pump beam into the nonlinear medium and its intensity. Phase conjugation was achieved as a result of STBS.

Numerical analysis of the influence of aberrations such as coma and astigmatism on the quality of phase conjugation accompanying stimulated Brillouin scattering 受激布里渊散射中彗差和像散等像差对相位共轭质量影响的数值分析

A numerical analysis was made of the influence of aberrations such as coma and astigmatism on the quality of phase conjugation accompanying stimulated Brillouin scattering. It was found that coma appreciably reduces the optical conjugation fidelity, from 0.6 when Δλ0.5 = 0 to 0.2 when Δλ0.5 = 5λ. The presence of astigmatism negligibly influences the phase conjugation quality. In addition, in both cases an increase in aberrations results in a linear rise in the stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold.

A single-frequency neodymium glass laser was constructed and the longitudinal modes were selected using an LiF crystal containing color centers, which served also as a passive switch. A spectrally selective grating formed in such a switch during laser operation, resulting in spontaneous transformation of an initially wide spectrum into a single-frequency one. An analysis was made of the requirements which components of a single-frequency laser should satisfy and its characteristics were determined.

Methods for calculations of the contours of homogeneous refracting waveguide lenses, free of the lowest-order aberrations within a given angle in the field of view, are proposed. Descriptions are given of ray-tracing and combined methods for monitoring the operation of lenses. In the calculation of the shapes of the contours and numerical testing of lenses a full allowance is made for the anisotropy of the optical properties of waveguides made of lithium niobate.

It is suggested that a phase-contrast interferometer can be used in combination with a thin layer of a transparent nonlinear medium to narrow the angular distribution of a coherent laser beam. An experimental demonstration is reported of a fourfold increase in the axial brightness of a diverging He–Ne laser beam. A cell containing a liquid crystal and an additional layer, which absorbed partly the laser radiation and heated the liquid crystal, was used as the nonlinear medium. The experiments confirmed enhancement of the brightness of the phase image in the proposed system.

Harmonic generation in double-undulator free-electron lasers is considered. It is based on the resonance of oscillations in the field of the second undulator with a longitudinal magnetic field. It is shown that effective control of the harmonic generation is feasible under these conditions. Only one chosen harmonic is generated and the rest are suppressed. The main undulator parameter is then low.

An electric-discharge x-ray preionized XeCl laser operating in an unswitched regime was developed and the dependence of its output characteristics on the pump power was investigated. An output energy per pulse of 15 J was obtained with an efficiency of 2.4% from a 4.3-liter active volume.

A new design of a free-electron laser is suggested in which an additional space-periodic magnetic field (second undulator) is used in addition to the basic undulator. Electron oscillations in the field of the second undulator are in resonance with the cyclotron rotation of particles in a longitudinal magnetic field. This gives rise to a mechanism, which governs the bunching of electrons in the field of a ponderomotive wave. This mechanism can prevail causing significant enhancement of the gain. Under different initial conditions an amplification regime can arise, which is close to a self-resonance when the efficiency can be high.

A cavity is suggested for an industrial solid-state laser with a large-aperture adaptive mirror. Theoretical calculations of the basic cavity characteristics are reported.
