Pulse profile and transitions to chaos in a laser with a saturable absorber 具有饱和吸收体的激光的脉冲轮廓和向混沌的跃迁

The dynamics of a single-mode CO2 laser with a saturable absorber is investigated numerically allowing for phase relationships and offsets between the lines. A detailed study is made of bifurcation of stationary (steady-state) and periodic solutions in the case of zero offset. It is shown that in the system under investigation there are two possible scenarios of transition to chaos for the selected parameters of a CO2/CH3I laser: period doubling and intermittency. An analysis is made of a change in the spectrum of the characteristic Lyapunov exponents in the chaotic lasing range. The predicted pulsed profiles are in good agreement with the experimental results. It is shown that in a certain range of parameters a laser with an absorber exhibits a generalized multistability.

Use of a photothermoplastic disk for storing two-dimensional Fourier holograms in optical data-processing systems 光热塑性磁盘在光学数据处理系统中存储二维傅立叶全息图的应用

The fundamental principles of locally recording two-dimensional holograms on a photothermoplastic disk by heating with an infrared laser are considered. The method developed was used in making a holographic photothermoplastic disk with homogeneous storage characteristics. The promising aspects of designing a system based on a holographic photothermoplastic disk and using the parallel data-processing principle, such as an optical neural network and an optical correlator, are pointed out. The principle merit of these systems is their high data-processing rate with a large storage capacity for standard patterns. The possibilities are indicated of implementing low-frequency spatial image filtering by recording matched niters and holograms, of recording complex filters by superposition, and of local rerecording of data on a photothermoplastic disk.

Large crystals of silver selenogallate were grown. Generation of the second harmonic of CO2 laser radiation in these crystals was studied. An energy conversion efficiency of 19.8% was achieved. Calculations were made of the angular tuning characteristics of optical parametric oscillators using type I and II processes at various pump wavelengths.

Aplanatic waveguide Fresnel lenses 非平面波导菲涅耳透镜

A new modification of waveguide Fresnel lenses is proposed. The phase-shifting zones in these lenses are located on a curvilinear contour. It is shown that the coma aberration can be eliminated by selecting the contour shape as a circle in an isotropic waveguide and as part of an ellipse in an anisotropic waveguide. Results of a numerical simulation are presented. These demonstrate that the optical characteristics of lenses having a curvilinear contour are improved considerably. It is noted that hybrid planar optical systems free of the lowest-order aberrations can be constructed.

Self-modulated stimulated emission from solid-state ring lasers with nonplanar resonators 非平面谐振腔固体环形激光器的自调制受激发射

A new approach is developed for the description of self-modulated operation of solid-state ring lasers. This type of operation is considered as a superposition of two normal modes of a ring resonator with retroreflectors. The normal modes of ring resonators with retroreflectors are found using the 4 × 4 matrix formalism. The frequency characteristics of rotating nonplanar ring lasers, including monolithic chip lasers, are calculated.

Influence of the shape of a crystalline active element on the output power of a single-mode laser 晶体有源元件的形状对单模激光器输出功率的影响

An investigation was made of the influence of the shape of a YAG:Nd3+ active element on the power of the fundamental TEM00 mode. It was found that if shallow grooves were formed in the active element between the crystallographic axes, at the places where the pumping induced the greatest birefringence, the output power increased by 40–50%. These grooves improved the removal of heat from the central part of the active element responsible for generating the TEM00 mode and thus reduced the thermal deformation distorting the front of the light wave.

Collimation and compression of atomic beams under conditions of coherent population trapping 相干居群俘获条件下原子束的准直与压缩

A theoretical investigation was made of the collimation and compression of atomic beams under two-frequency cooling conditions. It was possible to reach cooled atom temperatures right down to TR = 2k2/2MkB ≈ 10−6 K, determined by the recoil energy of the atom. The dependences of the temperature on the frequency difference between the light waves were investigated, for velocities near zero, and these were found to be in qualitative agreement with those observed experimentally. An expression for the beam diameter after compression by diverging waves was derived. Estimates of these effects are given for cases of practical importance.
