Thomas Hvid Kromann
Thomas Hvid Kromann: An International Network of Archives. The Situationist International and the documents left behind The international avant-garde movement called the Situationist International, which was founded in 1957, is often considered to be one of the most important political-artistic movements of the post-war period. Over the years, a field of research within this subject has arisen in e.g. France and USA. A new trend in the 2010s, as new source material has become available, including in the archives, is a historical-archival focus. This article examines the international network of archives that is relevant for historical analyses of the Situationist International. Relevant archives are described in the article, including papers left behind by Asger Jorn and Guy Debord at home and abroad. It is argued that the conditions for access to the archives are of specific significance. The issue of the lack of completeness of the archives is also discussed. The article shows how an archival approach, subject to familiarity with the network of archives, can challenge and correct the narratives that have existed in research so far, with Guy Debord as a particular focal point. The article concludes with an analysis of Debord’s own archive and emphasises the need for a critical approach to archives that are arranged by people while they are still alive.

Axel Teich Geertinger
Axel Teich Geertinger: Contextualising Library Collections through Thematic Catalogues Between the years 2014 and 2019, Dansk Center for Musikudgivelse (DCM) (Danish centre for Music Editing) has published thematic-bibliographic catalogues of the works of four composers, in both digital and printed editions: Carl Nielsen, Johann Adolph Scheibe, J.P.E. Hartmann and Niels W. Gade. The concept and the software behind it were developed by DCM concurrently with the work on the actual catalogues’. DCM’s catalogues of the works are in keeping with a long tradition within musicology, in which such catalogues are a standard tool. In view of the particular situation for sources in Denmark, on the one hand, where most of the relevant material concerning Danish composers can be found in the Royal Danish Library’s collections, and the conversion of the catalogue concept to digital media on the other, DCM’s catalogues of works also gain a different perspective, so that they are not just a reference work for researchers, students and musicians, but also actual dissemination of the collection. While library catalogues’ perspective is fundamentally concentrated on specific items, catalogues of works – as the name says – concentrate on works. The works perspective is appropriate to provide an overview of all the material and information associated with a work and can thus put each source into a context. With links directly to library entries and digitisations, the catalogue can offer an alternative, more generalised and holistic approach to the library’s material than library catalogues. There are also links to related material, such as concurrent reviews in Mediestream. This article presents the catalogue of works concept and discusses its prospects and limitations, in particular from a library perspective.

Mette Kia Krabbe Meyer and Eld Zierau: Spitting Image. Press photographs and memes as digital cultural heritage in Netarkivet This article deals with the challenges that confront libraries in their efforts to collect and make available national cultural heritage to researchers in today’s hybrid media society. The authors illustrate their arguments with a case study: Sigrid Nygaard’s photograph of a man spitting down on to immigrants from its initial appearance in a Tweet of 2015 to its reproduction in the national and international and social media, a field which also includes the many memes it engendered. The authors describe how the photograph became part of a heated debate on immigration policies and media ethics and suggest different academic fields in which the material can be studied, such as political science and media studies. They investigate a selection of sources and describe how these were collected by Netarkivet as part of the library’s obligation under the Legal Deposit Act, thereby providing insights into the different methods of finding and collecting material from the internet. Finally they argue that commonly known referencing practices are insufficient when it comes to web archive materials in general and point to a newly emerging referencing practice using so-called Persistent Web IDentifiers (PWID), which enable researchers to create precise and persistent references to web archive resources. The research was carried out to ensure that such materials would be saved and would continue to be available to researchers, to investigate and contribute to new collection methods, to cite digital cultural heritage, and to inform researchers about Netarkivet’s resources and ways in which one can work academically with the materials the archive contains.

Claus Røllum-Larsen
Claus Røllum-Larsen: Musikselskabet af 14. Marts 1896.

Christian Kaaber
Christian Kaaber: Bispens bibliotek.

Trine Brox
Trine Brox: Text, technology, trope Tibetan Buddhist practices include the engagement with Buddhist script in the form of tightly packed scrolls of paper that are placed in drums and spun in order to accumulate merit. On the scrolls are written or printed mantras (sacred or magic sounds in the form of a series of syllables) or dhāraṇīs (formula condensing lengthy texts or teachings). The receptacles containing such scrolls are the iconic prayer wheels, whose materiality enables and restricts particular modes of textual engagement. What kind of texts are these scrolls? How does one read texts that come in the form of tightly packed scrolls? They cannot be read by immersing oneself in the content of the text because its materiality restricts access to it. Instead it fits perfectly with the prayer wheel technology that allows circumambulatory recitation, the article argues. The prayer wheel is not only an important object in recitation practices for Tibetan Buddhists, but has also become a key marker of Tibetan identity. Yet its history, culture and practice have received very little scholarly attention. This article attempts to eradicate this blind spot. It endeavors to show how the prayer wheel has earned itself its iconic status by explaining how the prayer wheel is a receptacle of sacred script and a device for reciting sacred script. The article zooms in on (i) the cult of the book in the Tibetan culture sphere, (ii) the technology of prayer wheels; and (iii) the recurring tropes of the wheel, circumambulation, and rotation in Buddhism, as well as the merit connected with them. In view of this particular constellation of book cult, technology, and dominant trope, it makes sense that, first of all, Tibetan Buddhists have adopted and further developed a technology that optimizes interaction with sacred script; secondly, that rotation is considered an adequate way to interact with Buddha’s doctrine; and third, that this device has become an icon for the Tibetan civilization. It is especially the sacred text within the wheel, the article argues, that endows the prayer wheel with high status in a hierarchy of Buddhist material objects. Finally, this raises questions about modernized prayer wheels – when technological progress has enabled further development of devices that can contain and spin Buddhist script such as optic discs, prayer wheel apps, and automated praying machines. How does their materiality impact textual engagement? The article is based upon data produced through (i) ethnographic inquiry, such as interacting with the stakeholders who deal with Buddhist material culture for different reasons, e.g. producers, marketers, ritual specialists, practitioners, and consumers, and (ii) textual sources that includes Tibetan and English-language scholarship, catalogues, user’s guides, and marketing material. This multi-modal method has produced knowledge about the prayer wheel as practice, i.e. what we can call popular religion, and as theor

Jesper Brandt Andersen: Curious case reports in the works of the Danish physician and anatomist Thomas Bartholin Scattered through the voluminous authorship of the Danish physician and anatomist Thomas Bartholin (1616–1680), famous for his discovery of the lymph vessels in the early 1650s, case reports can be found, for which Bartholin was criticized and accused for verbosity and lack of scientific judgment by contemporary scholars and later medical historians. In this article 15 such case reports, mainly from the work Historiarum Anatomicarum Rariorum 1654–1661, are presented, analyzed and perspectivated. It is concluded, that much of the criticism, especially the one submitted by the posteriority and especially during the era of positivism by the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and the one concerning observations made by Bartholin himself, is unjustified. When practising science himself Bartholin felt responsible for reproducing his observations correctly and trustworthy, and he was not satisfied by making conclusions on the basis of knowledge handed over by others. The author of this article has not succeded in finding one single example indicating that Bartholin doesn’t reproduce his own observations correctly and truthfully. On the other hand there are in his authorship numerous examples of case reports originating from others, which he either didn’t believe himself or at least doubted. When he published case reports originating from other people, he didn’t feel responsible for the truthfulness. His purpose bringing these case reports was to present his reader for new and interesting matter, to entertain his reader, to arouse his reader’s curiosity and to challenge his reader’s own judgment. Thomas Bartholin was one of the most excellent, diligent and passionate intermediaries of scientific matter of his time, and as a scientist he was characterized by openness. Often he was among the first to recognize, verify and publish new knowledge.
