Qualities Gained from Postbaccalaureate Programs Contributing to Medical School Success

Postbaccalaureate programs are becoming increasingly utilized by students as a pathway to medical school. Despite the possible negative connotations associated with nontraditional medical school applicants, findings from several studies demonstrate that individuals who have participated in a postbaccalaureate program perform either on par with or outperform their traditional counterparts. This study used a qualitative narrative approach to interview six participants to better understand the perspectives of current medical students who participated in a postbaccalaureate program. Further, this study examined the qualities nontraditional medical students believed they offered compared to their traditional counterparts that contributed to their success in medical school. Findings showed that while subjects had unique reasons for attending a postbaccalaureate program, their reasons generally focused on enhancing parts of their medical school application, predominantly for GPA improvement. In pursuing this pathway, participants found greater maturity and mental fortitude and developed multiple extracurricular passions. These qualities not only contributed to their success in medical school but are discussed as qualities on which they can build in their future practice as physicians.

Crisis in Rural Healthcare: Solutions To Meet the Need for Rural Physicians

Rural healthcare has reached a precipitous point in rural America. Despite significant growth in the number of medical students enrolled in medical schools, fewer students are choosing to practice in rural primary care settings. Low reimbursement, closure of rural hospitals and clinics as well as physician burnout have exacerbated the stress on the healthcare delivery system in underserved areas. Yet diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer are more prevalent per capita in rural communities than in urban areas. COVID-19 mortality also remains substantially higher in rural areas compared with urban ones. While rural medicine has been ignored in recent times, the healthcare supply has reached critically low levels, and changes to the system need to be prioritized. Solutions to help alleviate the rural physician shortage include opening new medical schools in rural communities, increasing exposure of medical students to underserved areas during their clinical years, and engaging in specific recruitment strategies for applicants from rural regions.

Primeros Libros de las Américas is a free database of scanned images of early printed books produced in the Americas from 1455 to 1600. This project is an international collaboration of more than 25 institutional partners from Mexico, Spain, Peru, and the U.S. The collection continues to grow as partner institutions join the project. The database includes high-resolution images and rich metadata descriptions that allow efficient searching. The goal of the project is to build a free digital collection of imprints from the early Americas that will include at least one copy of the 136 titles that have survived to the present. The collection offers unique primary sources for a variety of academic fields studying Colonial Spanish America.
