2-[N, N-Bis(l-naphthylmethyl)-aminomethyl]-18-crown-6 (3) gave intramolecular exciplex fluorescence, showing that the excited naphthalene chromophore was quenched by the nitrogen atom in the armed crown unit. The ann~ crown ether (3) was found to display unique photophysica1 properties in the presence of metal salts. Complexation of 3 with Zn 2 + increased the fluorescence intensity of the host by a factor of 2.4. IH and l3C NMR analyses of this complexation behavior revealed that Zn 2 + strongly coordinates with the anned crown nitrogen to cause a dramatic decrease in an intramolecular charge-transfer character.

This paper deals with a prediction method for the condensation of multi-component refrigerant mixture inside a horizontal smooth tube. Based on some reliable assumptions, the governing equations for the local heat and mass transfer characteristics are derived, and the prediction calculation for the condensation of ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a, including R407C, is carried out; the local values of vapor quality, thermodynamic states at bulk vapor, vapor-liquid interface and bulk liquid, mass flux etc. are obtained for a constant wall temperature and a constant wall heat flux conditions. The effects of the composition of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a on the heat transfer characteristics are clarified, and the heat transfer characteristics of R407C are compared with those of R22.

Mannich-type aminomethylation of m-ten-butylphenol (1) with a variety of secondary amines and formalin was carried out in ethanol at 70-80°C for 2 h. The reaction with amines such as pyrrolidine, piperidine, N-methylpiperazine, and N-benzylpiperazine gave the expected products, 2-pyrrolidinomethyl(2b), 2-piperidinomethyl(2d), 2-(N-methylpiperazino)methyl(2e), and 2-(N-benzylpiperazino)-methyl-5-te11-butylphenol (2 f) in high yields. The photoaddition reaction ofmethyl 2,4-dioxopentanoate with chloroprene gave two deMayo type adducts, methyl 3-(I-chlorovinyl)-2,6-dioxoheptanoate and methyl 3-chloro-2,6-dioxo-3-vinyl heptanoate. No regio isomers, 4-substituted esters, were observed. The photoadducts were converted to cyclohexenones and the selectivity of photoaddition was discussed.

An improved synthetic method for tetramethylammonium FTPB by a metal-halogen exchange reaction of pentafluorophenyl bromide with magnesium in the presence of a catalytic amount of butyl bromide and by a subsequent reaction with boron trifluoride diethyl ether was developed. The lipophilicity of tetramethylammonium FTPB in a range of hydrophobic organic solvents and its stability under highly acidic conditions were investigated in comparison with those of tetramethylammonium TFPB.
