A 1-year-old Miniature Horse filly was presented for chronic lethargy and hyporexia. Elevated liver enzymes, bile acids, and ammonia were noted on bloodwork. The primary differential diagnosis was a portosystemic shunt (PSS). Three-phase computed tomographic angiography findings were consistent with a transhepatic portosystemic shunt. Percutaneous liver biopsy confirmed severe diffuse hepatic changes, most likely due to chronic pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicosis, and medical management was elected. Based on an extensive literature review, this is the first report of a transhepatic portosystemic collateral vessel in a horse. Computed tomographic angiography is feasible and useful for the diagnosis of PSS in miniature horses.

Malignant splenic lesions in dogs are common, with hemangiosarcoma diagnosed most frequently, and there have been no consistent clinicopathologic, gross, or imaging characteristics identified that differentiate malignant from benign splenic lesions. Histopathology is required for definitive diagnosis, and given the poor long-term prognosis of malignant splenic lesions, a noninvasive tool to aid in diagnosis would be valuable. This prospective cohort study utilized gadoxetate disodium, a liver-specific contrast agent (Gd-EOB-DPTA; Eovist), to identify the general lesion and pre- and postcontrast signal characteristics of benign and malignant splenic and hepatic lesions in dogs with naturally occurring disease. Twenty-five dogs were enrolled, Eovist-enhanced MRI was performed, and dogs were taken to surgery for splenectomy and other organ biopsy. All histopathology and MRI studies were evaluated by a single pathologist and a single radiologist, respectively. The associations between the tumor type and numerous variables defined on MRI were evaluated using Fisher's exact tests, and the significance was identified at a P-value of .05. Malignant splenic masses were identified in 11/25 (44%) dogs, and 5/11 malignancies represented hemangiosarcoma. The presence of abdominal effusion (P = .017) and the presence of hepatic nodules on MRI (P = .009) were associated with splenic malignancy. There were no benign T2 hyperintense and no malignant T2 hypointense lesions (P = .021). Utilization of the T2 W MRI sequence may aid in the identification of malignant splenic lesions, particularly when accompanied by abdominal effusion and hepatic lesions.

An 8-year-old neutered male Maltese dog presented with a month-long history of progressive nonambulatory tetraparesis. MRI revealed a well-defined, centrally nonenhanced, T1-weighted hypointense, extradural structure located in the vertebral canal at the level of the C5 vertebral body. CT demonstrated a hypoattenuating, space-occupying structure in the same area. Surgery revealed a long, narrow parasite in the epidural space. An adult Dirofilaria immitis was confirmed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. This is a novel report describing the MRI and CT features of cervical epidural dirofilariasis in a dog.

A 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed cat weighing 4.5 kg was referred to our hospital with a left testicular mass. CT revealed mild heterogeneous contrast enhancement and calcification in the testicular mass. A well-defined, contrast-enhancing, multiloculated mass with fluid-filled areas was extended from the testicular mass in the scrotum to the caudal aspect of the left kidney. The abdominal mass extended to the right crus of the diaphragm, and the gastrointestinal tract was compressed dorsally. Histopathology was consistent with teratoma. Characteristic CT findings in a feline testicular teratoma may include calcification and cystic areas.

The construction of canine distal limb models used in teaching sonography identification of vegetal foreign bodies. 犬远端肢体模型的构建,用于植物性异物的超声波识别教学。

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a useful tool to identify radiolucent vegetal foreign bodies (VFBs). However, limited ultrasound experience and unfamiliarity with the normal sonographic appearance of anatomical structures can decrease clinician confidence. This study aimed to design a reusable silicone model that can teach VFB identification within the canine distal limb. Four canine hindlimbs were used to design the silicone models, and 12 canine distal forelimbs were constructed. The model was constructed using cadaver bones, barley grass (Avena fatua) seeds, and silicone to mimic the anatomy of the canine distal limb with a grass seed VFB. Limbs were randomly grouped based on grass seed locations: (1) the interdigital webbing, (2) the palmar surface of the canine forelimb immediately proximal to the metacarpal pad, (3) the dorsal surface of the distal limb immediately proximal to the proximal phalange, or (4) no grass seed (control) placed. Each limb was systematically ultrasounded and compared with cadaver limbs and clinical VFB cases. A comparison of ultrasonographic images validated the construction, revealing that the simulation model replicates the anatomical and echotexture characteristics of the normal canine distal limb. Furthermore, these models also have a likeness to clinical canine distal limb VFB cases and can be utilized as a training tool.

Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used in the staging of hepatic masses and for liver lobectomy planning. Mass location is an important factor in determining the feasibility of resection, including surgical technique and the likelihood of surgical complications. The objectives of this retrospective descriptive cross-sectional, observer agreement, method comparison study were to assess the reliability of CT in correctly determining the hepatic division and lobar site of origin of feline primary nonhematopoietic hepatic masses, compared with surgically confirmed locations. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the types and locations of liver masses found in a cohort of cats. Pre- and postcontrast CT images of 21 cats were independently and simultaneously reviewed by two observers. Intra- and interobserver agreements and descriptive statistics on demographic and histological diagnoses were calculated. Based on surgical assessment, it was found that masses most frequently originated from the left hepatic division (13/24, 54%). The most frequent lobar origins were the left lateral (8/24, 33%), left medial (5/24, 21%), and right medial lobes (5/24, 21%). No masses were found originating from the right lateral lobe. CT correctly determined hepatic division and lobar origin in 76% of cases, with good-to-excellent intra- and interobserver agreement. The hepatic division had higher agreements overall for both observers. Most of the masses were benign (17/21, 81%), and the most prevalent histological diagnoses were biliary cystadenoma (11/21, 52%) and hepatocellular adenoma (6/21, 29%). Findings suggest that postcontrast CT is a reliable method for correctly determining hepatic mass division and lobar origin in cats.

Mass location is an important factor in determining the feasibility of resection, including surgical technique and the likelihood of surgical complications. The objectives of this retrospective descriptive cross-sectional, observer agreement, method comparison study were to assess the reliability of CT in correctly determining the hepatic division and lobar site of origin of feline primary nonhematopoietic hepatic masses, compared with surgically confirmed locations. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the types and locations of liver masses found in a cohort of cats. Pre- and postcontrast CT images of 21 cats were independently and simultaneously reviewed by two observers. Intra- and interobserver agreements and descriptive statistics on demographic and histological diagnoses were calculated. Based on surgical assessment, it was found that masses most frequently originated from the left hepatic division (13/24, 54%). The most frequent lobar origins were the left lateral (8/24, 33%), left medial (5/24, 21%), and right medial lobes (5/24, 21%). No masses were found originating from the right lateral lobe. CT correctly determined hepatic division and lobar origin in 76% of cases, with good-to-excellent intra- and interobserver agreement. The hepatic division had higher agreements overall for both observers. Most of the masses were benign (17/21, 81%), and the most prevalent histological diagnoses were biliary cystadenoma (11/21, 52%) and hepatocellular adenoma (6/21, 29%). A 14-month-old female spayed, small crossbred rabbit presented for assessment of a small, hard subcutaneous nodule in the right axilla. Serum biochemistry showed markedly increased serum ALP activity. A whole-body CT revealed an aggressive, monostotic osteolytic, and productive lesion within the left alveolar process of the maxilla, with erosion of the alveolar bone and secondary premolar depression. Innumerable metastatic osseous masses were present throughout the body, including cerebral, pulmonary, hepatic, subcutaneous, and skeletal muscular metastases. Postmortem findings confirmed widespread, metastatic osteosarcoma, with the primary lesion within the left maxilla.

Successful definitive radiation treatment of refractory canine oral papillomatosis. 对难治性犬口腔乳头状瘤病的最终放射治疗获得成功。

This case report describes a three-year-old male intact border collie diagnosed with canine papillomavirus type 1 (CPV-1+) oral papillomas resistant to standard-of-care. With time, he developed lesions consistent with squamous cell carcinoma. Malignant tumors were incompletely excised and treated with definitive external beam radiation therapy (45 Gy, 3 Gy × 15 daily). The remaining oral cavity received 27 Gy (1.8 Gy x 15 daily) to treat the disseminated oral papillomatosis. A temporary treatment delay of 2 weeks was instituted due to grade 3 mucositis. The patient remained in complete remission after 10 months from radiotherapy. No tumor recurrences were noted by the owners after >1 year from treatment.

An 8-year-old mixed-breed dog was presented with cervical hyperesthesia, tetraparesis, and mild proprioceptive ataxia in all four limbs. 3 Tesla MRI showed a dorsal compressive intradural-extramedullary mass at the level of C1-C2, isointense to the gray matter with a hypointense ventral core on T2 weighted images (WI), isointense on T1WI, with a strong and homogeneous contrast enhancement. A C1-C2 partial dorsal laminectomy was performed, and the lesion was removed en bloc. The histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis defined the diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor.
