Health visitors' experiences talking about difficulties with the parent–infant relationship
Pub Date : 2022-07-02 DOI: 10.12968/johv.2022.10.7.292
Stefanie Kouvaras, A. Hassett, Virginia Lumsden
Parent–infant relationships are important for healthy child development and health visitors are in a prime position to highlight any difficulties. Limited research exists into health visitors' experiences of talking about these difficulties; therefore, this study aimed to shed further light on the subject. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 qualified health visitors working with parents and infants aged 0–4. Five themes emerged from the data: the felt experience – connection to the personal; the impact of containing and carrying the burden; how to name the elephant in the room; coping mechanisms; and some things help, some things hinder. Findings highlighted the emotional burden on participants leading to avoidance of having conversations. In conclusion, there is a need for reflective spaces and consultations, as well as future research to include exploring difficulties with fathers.

Health visitors' lived experiences supporting women with perinatal mental health problems
Pub Date : 2022-06-02 DOI: 10.12968/johv.2022.10.6.246
Elizabeth Modupe Duku, J. Lusher, S. Banbury
Health visitors play a critical role in supporting the mental wellbeing of vulnerable groups including perinatal women. This review synthesised qualitative and mixed-methods research from eight countries to provide a current understanding of how health visitors make sense of their experiences when supporting perinatal mental health problems. Electronic search engines were used to identify studies from 2011–2021. Of the 887 articles generated, a total of 19 eligible primary studies were selected for review. Clusters of themes emerged from the study findings and included health visitors' perceived role in supporting perinatal mental health problems and current practice in managing perinatal mental health. These included listening visits, cognitive behavioural therapy, referrals, and alternate inventions such as the internet-based-interventions. This review highlights the facilitators and challenges of these types of interventions along with the support and training needs of health visitors, which is of particular relevance in a post-pandemic world.
