Soyoung Kim. 2022. The Study on the Acquisition of the Korean Plural Marker -Tul—Based on Noun Plural Marking by Chinese L2 Learners of Korean. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 159-185. Korean plural marking on nouns exhibits less restriction in realization than the Chinese one. The Korean plural marker -tul can be attached not only to nouns denoting an inanimate object or abstract notion but also to generic or proper nouns, which its corresponding plural marker ‘们’ in Chinese cannot. The study investigates the acquisition of Korean plural marking on four types of nouns such as inanimate nouns, abstract nouns, generic nouns and proper nouns by Chinese L2 learners of Korean. By employing a multiple-choice task, thirty Chinese learners with high Korean proficiency level as well as thirty Korean adult native speakers were instructed to read a context that introduces plural entities and then choose an appropriate noun plural marking to refer to them among the three choices such as a noun without -tul, a noun with -tul and both of the forms possible. As a result, both of the participant groups had in common attaching –tul to generic nouns the most and abstract nouns the least. However, Korean adults strongly preferred to use a plural noun regardless of the noun types whereas Chinese learners demonstrated different plural marking depending on them. The findings are discussed in terms of L1 transfer and methodological issues.

Jungsun Kim. 2022. Word-Internal Consonant Deletion: Evidence from Teenagers in Spontaneous Seoul Korean Speech. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 187-205. This study investigated word-internal consonant deletion for teenagers in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. The dataset of speakers for this study was excerpted from the Korean Corpus of Spontaneous Speech (Yun et al. 2015). For the first part of the study, the factors triggering word-internal consonant deletion were examined by the number of syllables, syllable positions, syllable structures. For the second part of the study, the types of consonants deleted were examined on a basis of the production of individual speakers. The results showed that the proportions of deletion for a velar stop [k], an alveolar nasal [n], and an alveolar liquid [r] were likely to be higher between vowels for two-and three-syllable words. The deletion proportion of a velar stop was prevalent among individual speakers. In addition, the proportion of consonant deletion (i.e., [k], [n], [r]) for teenagers was compared to the one for speakers of 20s (Kim et al. 2016). Regarding [k], [n], and [r], younger speakers (i.e., teenagers) showed higher proportion for consonant deletion than older speakers (i.e., twenties). Therefore, this study implies that the consonant deletion of teenagers may be related to the development of articulatory strategy in spontaneous speech.

Jiyong Lee. 2022. A Study on Machine Translation Aspects of Korean Cause and Reason Connection Grammar and Expression Items: Focusing on Kakaoi, Google, and Papago Translator. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 207-226. Along with the 4th Industrial Revolution, the era of artificial intelligence has arrived. Artificial intelligence technology is already actively being used in many areas that were considered to be areas that only humans could do. A representative example of this situation is an artificial intelligence-based translator. As time goes by, it is obvious that a high-performance translator will be developed. However, it is time to discuss how translators can be used for learning foreign languages. Therefore, this study aims to examine how the items presented as similar grammar items in Korean language education are calculated in the artificial intelligence translator. Korean similar grammar items are one of the most difficult for teachers and learners in the field of Korean grammar education. This is because grammar items with similar functions exist in various forms. This study aims to analyze how equivalent grammar items that perform these similar functions are realized through machine translation. The results presented in three types of translators are compared, and furthermore, the accuracy is determined by using the reverse translation method. Based on these research contents, it is expected that it is possible to think about the parts to be supplemented in machine translation and the parts to be considered when using them in Korean language education.

Boon-Joo Park, 2022. Eye-movement Analysis of Sentence Processing with Complex Noun Phrase: Number Agreement within the Relative Clause. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 139-157. The current study aims to investigate how ESL university students undergo the syntactic process of relative clause with complex noun phrases. The target sentences have two kinds of complex noun phrase varied with the numbers: one consists of single noun (N1) and plural noun(N2) phrases and the other consists of plural noun(N1) and single noun (N2) phrases. The data collection through tracking eye-movement during language processing enables us to investigate the process more in-depth level and to have wide range of insight of language learners’ processing. The results from eye-movement analysis showed that the participants underwent different process the two mismatched types of relative clause with complex noun phrases (singular – plural NPs vs. plural-singular NPs).

This present study investigated the relationship between Chinese senior high school students’ mastery of pronunciation features and their speaking fluency. Sixty-six second-year Chinese senior high school students participated in this study. The first instrument measured subjects’ mastery of pronunciation features consisting of six categories: vowels, consonants, linking, assimilation, intonation and stress while the second one assessed their three aspects of speaking fluency by reading a text: pause, repetition and speech rate. The results of data analysis showed most subjects in this study performed well on segmental features, but their performance on supra-segmental features were weak. Moreover, subjects from the high supra-segmental group outperformed low supra-segmental group in the uses of stress, intonation and linking. Based on the results, employing consciousness-raising activities for teaching pronun- ciation were suggested for improving students’ pronunciation skills.

Normative verb tenses in the English research article (RA) abstract constitute the present in the rhetorical moves of Introduction, Purpose, and Conclusion and the past in Method and Product. However, non-normative tenses may at times appear. This paper looked at non-normative tenses in English RA abstracts. Based on a preliminary analysis of 20 RA applied linguistics abstracts, the study develops how non-normative tenses work in the genre of RA abstracts. Findings discuss writers’ intentions lying in each non-normative tense in each rhetorical move: the present perfect in the Introduction Move, the past in Purpose, the present in Method, the present in Product, and auxiliaries in Conclusion.

The present study investigated international worker patients’ English directive speech acts in their intercultural consultations with domestic doctors at three institutions in the Republic of Korea. Special attention was paid to the patient-initiated directives at the treatment or advice phase and to the discursive links that they triggered. The factors considered included the overall process across the individual sessions, the diachronic continuity (or lack thereof) of the sessions, and the intertextuality or intratextuality of the links as well as the directness of the speech act in question. Close qualitative analysis led to the identification of (at least) four discursive links that the patients’ directives triggered: ㆍDirect directives that trigger a link to all sessions in general ㆍDirect directives that trigger a link only to the immediate follow-up session ㆍNon-direct directives that trigger a link to a discourse unrelated to the current session ㆍNon-direct directives that trigger both intertextual and intratextual links simultaneously Each was closely compared and contrasted to each other and to those in Černý’s (2007, 2017) intracultural consultations. Discussions and limitations were also discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to show that the types of sentences in Korean may be determined not only by the syntactic information but also by the phonological information, especially the prosody structure. In the informal style constructions in the Hearer-oriented Honorific System, we conducted phonetic experiments to prove this phenome- non. As a result, it is observed that the types of sentences can be distinguished by intonation. Since the sentence type of Korean is determined at the end of the sentence, it can be confirmed that each sentence type is divided according to IP boundary tones. Our observation is significant because it is an example of the anti-cyclicity of the derivational operation in generative grammar. This does not mean, however, that all types of sentences will be related to anti- cyclicity.

The study aimed at examining the number of English linguistics questions, question formats, and test trends of the Public Secondary School English Teacher Employment Exam (PSSETEE) from 2019 to 2022. The results of the study revealed that the proportion of English linguistics questions had the highest proportion on the exam, comprising more than 26 percent in the PSSETEE. When analyzing the ratio by sub-field, phonology/ morphology and syntax/semantics showed the largest proportion in English linguistics questions, comprising more than 90 percent of the items. In particular, the ratio of phonology/morphology was more than that of syntax/semantics in the recent 4 years. This was different from the fact that syntax/semantics had the largest proportion in English linguistic questions from 2014 to 2018. Regarding question formats, the English linguistics questions tended to show more extended-response essay formats (n=16) than short-answer formats (n=10). Finally, the discrepancy between the rate of English linguistics courses in the Teachers College curriculum and that of English linguistics questions on the exam was discussed with future suggestions.
