The COVID-19 pandemic compelled most of the countries to impose a lockdown bringing the whole world to a standstill and everyone had to quickly adapt to different ways of working, learning, communicating, and adjusting at every step of life. In response, online education was implemented in India because of the unprecedented nationwide closure of all academic institutions. Initially, a complete shift to online learning was a difficult process for both students and teachers but eventually they got familiarized as it was being used partly over the past few years in dental and higher educational institutes all over the country. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To evaluate the efficacy of e-learning, (2) To assess knowledge, attitude, and perception of dental students regarding the online learning program during COVID-19 pandemic.A self-administered questionnaire was formulated and validated by the subject experts and IEC permission was obtained. Online feedback was collected from UG and PG students of Dental colleges in Central India using Google forms.Total questionnaire received was 600 in which 520 responses were complete. Out of which 453 (87.2%) were Bachelor of Dental Surgery and 67 were (12.8%) Master of Dental Surgery students. Around 500 students had a considerable knowledge of computers with 411 (79.1%) of students claiming to have an appropriate internet access. Almost 62.4% of the students agreed that technology has helped them in understanding concepts and improved their ability to retain information. Students gave varied responses regarding their perception of online learning but agree that this is the only way to continue with their dental education in these unprecedented times of the pandemic. The use of online lectures, webinars, and continuing dental education has proved to be informative for dental students and has played a substantial role in completion of the curriculum in these pandemic times. Therefore, a mixed model online and offline education can be developed for effective learning.

The aim of this study is to investigate the subjective ratings of dental anxiety levels among university students of different fields.A prevalidated questionnaire was distributed among the undergraduates in the dental, medical, and engineering fields.A total of 150 students participated in the study. According to the result, it can be stated that anxiety was more common in engineering undergraduates. The majority of participants were more anxious before the procedure even started. The reason for fear among all the procedures, fear of pain was the main cause for 58% (87) participants, while fear of injection remains a cause for 18.7% (28) participants. On the contrary, minimum respondents had a fear about the sound of the drill. The result of current research indicates that dental anxiety is quite prevalent among undergraduates. Fear of pain is the main reason behind anxiety. Extraction of a tooth and root canal is a major reason for provoking anxiety among all the procedures. Therefore, all efforts should be undertaken to allay the fear by appropriate techniques of patient counseling to make sure that the patient understands the necessity of the procedure and cooperates.

The objective of this study was to assess the difficulties faced by dental students with respect to dental procedures on patients when they transitioned from preclinical to clinical department during their undergraduate course.A pre-validated questionnaire was distributed amongst third year, final year students and interns.A total of 241 students participated in the study. The majority of the students 45 (18.6%) faced difficulty in the procedure of extraction of teeth, and struggled least 5 (2%) with communicating with patients in their mother-tongue language. This study concluded that the transition period was not as much stressful to the present study participants. There were difficulties encountered by students especially during some clinical procedures such as formulating a proper treatment plan, during extraction of teeth and controlling bleeding during extraction where the concentration should be given by both students as well as educators. The interns of the present study were at a disadvantage as their third year and final year academics were held online due to pandemic, giving them less exposure to clinicals and patients.

Dental student perceptions on clinic supervision: A qualitative study
Pub Date : 2023-08-23 DOI: 10.25259/jadpr_3_2023

The integration of knowledge from basic sciences to clinical dentistry is an important learning process experienced by dentistry students. The entire process is facilitated by the faculty, officially recognized as the clinical supervisor. This research described student perceptions regarding clinical supervision in a Philippine dental school. This study used the qualitative method through focused group discussions (FGDs). For each FGD, the target sample size is six to ten participants. Guide questions were prepared. A facilitator who has a background in Master of Health Professions Education and prior experience in facilitating was requested to conduct the FGD proceedings. Audio recording was used and the minutes were transcribed to facilitate analysis and sent to the facilitator and participants after 1 week for validation.Five FGDs consisting of six students each were conducted to probe on students’ perception of clinical supervision. In total, 30 students participated. Most were female junior students. The first theme which arose from the student perceptions was the lack of time due to the high faculty-student ratio. A second theme which arose was that certain faculty traits affect students’ perceptions of clinical supervision. Faculty characteristics which affected them positively were patience, approachability, and fairness. Faculty characteristic which affected them negatively was preferential treatment or favoritism that they see in the clinics.Students mentioned faculty traits of patience, approachability, and fairness as positive traits in a clinical supervisor. On the other hand, students agreed that the general lack of time due to the faculty-student ratio made it difficult for the faculty to allot sufficient attention to each student.

Oral health is an essential factor of day to day life. The habit of maintaining oral health and daily routine for the same should be incorporated into the children from their childhood. An oral cavity free from all disease is maintained by awareness about the preventive measures. Parents play a key role in their kids’ life, thus their understanding toward oral health are important. The aim of the study was to assess awareness among parents about preventive measures of oral health problems in children. The main objective is to assess awareness of problems related to oral cavity and to encourage parents to maintain good oral hygiene of their children by adapting preventive measures and also to know the requirement of encouraging oral health promotion programs.A pre-validated questionnaire was distributed among the parents of children aged till age of 12 years old. The questionnaire related to oral hygiene practice and awareness of oral health problems including 13 questions were distributed through Google forms to parents through WhatsApp and email.A questionnaire with 13 items was used to evaluate parents’ knowledge of oral health. Forty-two men and 62 women made up the 104 parents of children between the ages of 6 months to 12 years. Demographic details include 59.61% of females and 40.38% of males were participated. A total of 104 parents participated in the study. In a poll of 104 parents, it was determined that 81.73% of the parents believed that brushing twice a day was important, and 51.92% of the parents felt that they should visit their dentist at 6–12 months of age of child. It was determined from the survey that 81.73% of the parents wanted more information on how to maintain their children’s teeth better. To address all of the survey’s questions, an educational brochure was issued once the questionnaires were collected. It is essential that parents and dentists teach their kids good brushing and oral hygiene habits.Although the parent’s understanding of the many elements that affect dental health was good, there are some aspects where still lack of knowledge exist that must be taken into account. Parents’ education can be the most encouraging factor in preventing oral health problems because prevention is always preferable to cure. To enhance awareness and start dental caries prevention techniques early, it is necessary to supervise dental health education initiatives that are directed at parents of school-aged children.

An emerging area of dentistry is regenerative and stem cell therapy. For these treatments to be successfully implemented in clinical practice, dentists’ perspectives and understanding of the principles are crucial, to assess the knowledge of dental students on the potential therapeutic application of stem cells, to assess the attitude of dental students for the acceptance of regenerative treatment modalities, and to determine whether further training in the area is necessary.A questionnaire on stem cell regenerative dentistry was distributed to 250 dental students of Private Dental College of Nagpur (Maharashtra), consisting of 17 questions on knowledge and attitudes toward regenerative therapy. The frequencies underwent a descriptive analysis. The postgraduate students have adequate knowledge about stem cell regenerative therapy (95.6%) and they are enthusiastic for the acceptance of regenerative treatment. The majority of dentistry students had no prior training in stem cell therapy (75.60%), although many were eager to pursue more education in this area (67.60%).Most dental students are eager to pursue further training in regenerative dentistry and are supportive of the use of stem cells and regenerative dental therapies. Most participants thought that the subject should be covered in the undergraduate course.

Emotional intelligence (EI) serves as a guide to people for recognizing their as well as other persons feelings and make appropriate choices by applying this knowledge. It is also responsible for building stronger relationships, succeeding at work, and achieving personal and professional goals. The aim of the study was to find out correlation between EI and academic performance (AP) in dental students of VSPM Dental College and Research Centre. (VSPM DCRC).A cross-sectional and observational study was conducted among the students of VSPM DCRC over a period of 6 months. Study participants were interns who had completed 4 years of study, final year students, 3rd-year students, and 2nd-year students of VSPM DCRC.A total of 130 students participated in this study. Out of total 130 participants, 104 were females and 26 were males, there is a positive correlation between AP and EI. Since P < 0.05 so the correlation is significant. Furthermore, the value of correlation coefficient (r) is 0.029, thus there is 2% of correlation between EI and AP.A positive correlation was observed between EI and AP in students. However, as the EI of majority of students in this study was high, the value of correlation was small.

In general, the patients reporting to dental clinics are more willing to take treatment advised by their dentists who are backed by scientific knowledge and experience. However, when it comes to dental students who are learning about diseases and various treatment modalities, practicing by themself, there comes a dubious situation whether to go for treatment by their dental peers or not. With this thought, this study was planned to evaluate the willingness of dental students toward the treatment by their dental peers. The aims of this study were to evaluate dental student’s willingness toward the treatment by dental student peers. In this cross-sectional study, undergraduate dental students and interns from VSPM DC RC, Nagpur, were evaluated, for which a self-administered questionnaire using Google forms was used. The study revealed that only 32% of participants agreed to accept treatment by their dental peers. This finding suggests that students are uncertain to accept treatment by their peers.About 32% of participants were ready to accept treatment, this shows somehow satisfactory professional relation among students. High percentage of participants was not sure about the acceptance of treatment by their dental peer.

Osteonecrosis is a common terminology used nowadays associated with severe trauma. Osteonecrosis also known as avascular necrosis occurs due to diminished blood supply, depriving bone tissue of essential nutrients, and oxygen leading to death of bone cells in a circumscribed region. Medication-related osteonecrosis of jaws (MRONJs) are a recent concept and correspond to necrosis of bones particularly jaw bones due to use of certain medications without any prior exposure to radiation. Several medications tend to alter the bone remodeling process, affecting the diseased bone resorption, and leading to poor oral health maintenance. Adequate documentation and awareness about this condition can help to prevent the condition. This study aims to evaluate the existing knowledge that prevails about pathogenesis, staging, and treatment modalities currently available about the condition among interns and postgraduates. An online questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was carried out among interns and postgraduates of VSPM’s Dental College and Research Center. General characteristics, knowledge about medications responsible, pathogenesis, risk factors, staging, treatment protocols, and drug holiday were recorded that the responses were compiled and statistically analyzed.A total of 125 participants participated in the survey. About 72.8% of participants had heard about this condition earlier, whereas 8.8% were unaware of this terminology. About 27.2% people had no idea about the drug holiday concept. Furthermore, significant difference existed between designation and responses. The results suggest that a significant difference exists between awareness about MRONJ among interns and postgraduates. Postgraduate students currently pursuing their degree were more aware and had significant knowledge about the clinical entity and more inclined toward further upgrading their knowledge about the same rather than interns.
