Magris appears so often in the Spanish national press as to make it nearly impossible to be exhaustive. It is very difficult and complicated to talk about Claudio Magris’ presence in Spain and the presence of Spain in his journalistic articles within a limited space. Therefore, the current essay focuses on some of his most important contributions, starting with his first interventions and relationships with the main newspapers, magazines and writers, as well as the editions of volumes in Castilian and Catalan, and the awards he has won. Magris is a fundamental point of reference for the intellectual world in Spain, where he is never perceived as a foreigner, let alone a stranger.

Adelia Noferi
Adelia Noferi (1922-2014) was one the greatest scholars of Petrarch, Bruno, and D’Annunzio and twentieth-century poetry, as well as one of the most refined theorists of the twentieth century and its poetics. This book collects previously unpublished texts, some of which arose from the courses that Noferi taught at university; they reflect with a wealth of doctrine and suggestions on poetry and criticism through Petrarchan readings and an adventurous journey through the topoi of the forest in literature. From the locus amoenus to the labyrinth, the investigation takes place at a structural, formal, symbolic and cultural level and retraces forms and junctions of the imagination through exemplary texts (from Dante to Bigongiari and Zanzotto). The second section, enriched by an iconographic apparatus, collects profiles and testimonies in multiple voices, a biography between generations, and a complete bibliography.

The current essay aims to highlighting a few aspects of the fine ‘art of the monologue’ practiced by Claudio Magris in his remarkable theatrical achievements (three dramatic monologues and two choral plays), in particular, on his most compelling play, Lei dunque capirà (2006). On one hand, the play highlights his masterly use of the stylistic/dialogic capacity of the monologue on stage and, on the other, it offers an unprecedented and extraordinary (parodic) re-actualization of the myth of Orpheus.

This volume brings together a selection of essays on Claudio Magris’ work, aiming to enrich critical debate with a specific focus on interdisciplinary dimension and continuous dialogue with the main European literary traditions. The outcome is an overall study on Magris’ narrative, essayistic and theatrical production, trying to fix his plural and prismatic identity: from the narration of places to an unavoidable ideological tension; from philosophical alphabets to the weight of History; from Myth’s remediation to the abroad reception; from hypotext filigree to real case studies. According to a diachronic perspective, they focus attention on Magris’ works, such as Microcosmi, Alla cieca, Non luogo a procedere and Tempo curvo a Krems.

“Born on 25th May 1936. Two specific desires: not to become an adult, and to write”. Jacqueline Risset (1936-2014) was a translator from French (Ponge, Sollers, the Tel Quel poets) and Italian (Dante, Machiavelli, Balestrini), as well as a well-known scholar for her work on Scève, Proust and Bataille. The aim of this volume is to analyse Risset’s poetic work, from the beginnings with textual writing in the experimentalism of Tel Quel, through a trajectory that, crossing Dante and Stilnovism through the translation of the Divine Comedy, led the author to the elaboration of a poetics centred on “privileged instants” that open “to the elsewhere”.

The contribution reworks an essay published in the journal «LEA» (2015) through combining it with a short paper presented at a Conference (2019) introducing readings of excerpts from Magris’ Non luogo a procedere. The essay also adds some critical considerations suggested by more recent studies published at an international level close to the translations and corresponds to the conclusion of the second Meridiano of Mondadori devoted to the writer’s works. It takes on a sum of knowledge that transformed it, gradually assuming a somewhat exorbitant dimension. A work represents for Magris the sea into which all the rivers of writing have flowed, just as for Pirandello with his Uno, nessuno e centomila.

The vast extension of the Habsburg Empire, as well as its heterogeneous cultural and linguistic composition, were both the causes of its richness and demise. This gave way to a debate on the specific traits of Austrian literature, which in 1963 was enriched by Claudio Magris’ degree thesis, published under the title Il mito absburgico nella letteratura austriaca moderna. Starting from the assumptions of a Lukacian-style historicist critique, the book ended up offering a fascinating evocation of the cultural world of great Austria. Together with his subsequent Germanic and non-fiction works (Lontano da dove, L’anello di Clarisse, Danubio), this debut book forms a "Central European tetralogy".

«Auf Wiedersehen in Florenz!» Voci di ebrei tedeschi dall’Italia presents a new Italian perspective on German exile literature, which is related to the migration of German-Jewish intellectuals to Florence after 1933. A reconstruction of the historical context is provided by shedding light on the intersections between Italian, German and Jewish cultures in the Florentine context but also on the literary production of the involved authors. Migration writers such as Alice Berend, Rudolf Borchardt, Karl Wolfskehl and Walter Hasenclever are presented in relation to the process of writing in exile, whereas the works of Max Krell, Monika Mann, Otti Binswanger-Lilienthal and Georg Strauss are analyzed in the section devoted to post-exile.

This essay traces and analyses the various representations of technology in Claudio Magris’ work. From the answering machines of Le voci to the war machines of Non luogo a procedere, a controversial and conflicting relationship has always been established between the protagonists of Magris’ narratives and the various declinations of technological progress. The essay explores the concepts of cognitive sciences and digital humanities (such as the “extended mind” and word embeddings), while also referring to Magris’ own reflections on writing and figureheads, to illustrate the profoundly ethical value of the relationship established between human beings and the tools that they create.

«The good comic novel». La narrativa comica di Henry Fielding e l’importanza dell’esempio cervantino analyses the influence of Don Quixote on Henry Fielding’s fiction, starting with a survey of the reception of the Spanish novel in England. Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones are analyzed and compared with the Spanish novel, from which Fielding overtly borrowed some characters, episodes, and Cervantes’ parodic strategies. Fielding’s and Cervantes’s narrative proceeded from the parodic deconstruction and subsequent innovation of previous literature, with the main purpose of teaching and amusing the reader at the same time. Finally, the volume examines the role of Fielding and Cervantes in the rise of the fictional and the self-conscious novel.
