Anthropologists of forced migration have advanced unique perspectives exploring identity and community as they relate to space. With its critique of naturalized conceptions of rootedness, boundedness, and territorialization, anti-sedentarism stands as an important conceptual development emanating from this work. And while expressions such as ‘sedentary bias’ and ‘sedentarist thinking’ are found throughout this body of literature, anti-sedentarism per se has not received a proper treatment of its disciplinary underpinnings and intellectual horizons. This article identifies some of the genealogical traces of anti-sedentarism, discussing it through anthropological contributions in both the cultural and mobility turns. Informed by the work of anthropologists of forced migration, a working definition of anti-sedentarism is provided, followed by a critical discussion on key debates related to this concept. A selection of migrant and refugee ethnographies produced during the mobility turn (1990s onward) is then used to explore the extent which anti-sedentarism has translated to the empirical work of anthropologists and ethnographers engaging with displacement, dispossession, and deterritorialization.

It is timely in many senses to reflect on culture and history in the in the Pacific. I join colleagues in celebrating the anniversary of the 1990 publication of the landmark volume Culture and History in the Pacific, edited by Jukka Siikala. The book was the fruitful result of a 1987 international symposium sponsored by the Academy of Finland that brought together a group of western scholars of the Pacific with Soviet counterparts (Keesing 1987). Times have changed. But it is again a good time for anthropologists and historians to reflect on the importance of insights from and about the Pacific for our understanding of cultural structures and histories across the globe—particularly as we consider the culture and history of our interconnections (including nation-state belonging) and the culture and history of our encounter with the Anthropocene.

What a pleasure it is to read Culture and History in the Pacific (Siikala 2021b [1990]) once again. The new, open access edition of this important volume brings back memories of my days in graduate school at the University of Chicago in the late 1990s. Such memories are bittersweet: as I write this piece in April 2021 I have just received word that my dissertation supervisor Marshall Sahlins has passed away at the age of 90. I’d like to take this opportunity, therefore, to look back at Sahlins and Chicago from my perspective as a professor at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. What was the moment of ‘historical anthropology’ of which Culture and History in the Pacific was a part? What has it become? What are the legacies of this volume and the school of thought that runs through it?

The paper investigates the emotional foundation of sense of place in small urban environments. The study was based on an anonymous questionnaire exploring various emotions in relation to urban environments in two small northern cities Haparanda (Sweden) and Tornio (Finland). The study revealed that senior citizens mentioned emotions connected to the past (sorrow), active living (interest, joy), and solitude (ease) more frequently than any other emotions, and attributed these to such places as historical buildings, churches, cemeteries, swimming pools, etc. The border betweenthe two cities was marked by mixed emotions, both positive and negative. To visualize emotions and places of emotions in Tornio and Haparanda, as well as for insight into the boundaries of emotional urban environments, the author created emotion maps of these cities. The maps visually resemble multi-colored tapestries with emotions as nodes, which inspired the title of this paper. This study allowed expanding the scope of the anthropology of emotions by the inclusion of territorial focus in the study of small urban environments. In the context of world-wide population ageing tendency, weneed to study places of emotions to come up with a comprehensive and integral approach to city planning policies, and to create more adaptable and age-friendly urban environments.

The year 2021 saw the open-access republication of Culture and History in the Pacific (ed. Jukka Siikala), an edited volume originally published by the Finnish Anthropological Society. Suomen antropologi: The Journal of the Finnish Anthropological Society marks the occasion with this special book forum. For a number of years, Culture and History in the Pacific was known as a book that was particularly hard to find. Now, 30 years after the original publication, the book is freely accessible with a new contextualizing introduction by Petra Autio (University of Helsinki). But what, if anything, is achieved by republishing this book now?
