Background With advances in obstetrical and neonatal care, very low birthweight (VLBW, 1 year and involving several organ systems or 1 system severely enough to require specialty care and hospitalization, and/or reliance on a medical technology or device (technology dependence; (TD)). Racial/ethnic differences in the prevalence of CCC or TD in VLBW infants are not known. Thus, we sought to estimate the racial/ethnic difference in the prevalence of …

Objectives: Premature infants, particularly those requiring neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stays, are at high risk for developmental delay. Non-English primary language (NEPL) families may have more difficulty navigating the healthcare system, and less knowledge of available developmental resources. While the literature suggests older children in NEPL families have poorer clinical outcomes compared to English-speaking families, there remain limited data assessing developmental outcomes among high-risk infants in NEPL families. Our objective was to use a nationally representative survey to determine if preterm infants of Hispanic Spanish speaking families had increased risk of developmental …

Introduction While Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening guidelines are well established for premature infants; the timing of exams for extreme micro-premature infants is still somewhat debated. Based on our study we propose ROP screening guidelines for infants under 26 weeks. Methods We used de-identified data from ROP CHECK (Glacier Medical Software, Inc), from 7 community hospitals, over a preceding 7-year period. 507 babies under 26 weeks were included in the study. Timing of reaching aggressive active disease (pre plus, plus, and stage 3 zone 1/ posterior …

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) prevalence has increased with an increase in the survival of premature infants (PI). BPD associated PH (BP-PH) occurs in 1/4th of the infants with BPD due to high pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). The endogenous NO production helps with decreasing the PVR. L-arginine (Arg) and L-citrulline (Cit) helps with the production of endogenous nitric oxide (NO). We speculate PI with BPD needs more NO to reduce PVR compared to infants without BPD which makes Arg/Cit as a semi-essential amino acid in infants with BPD-PH. TPN contains …
