This project is an exploratory investigation on the malpractices of corporate government associated with the «double role» that some shareholders assume in a private or public company (totally or partially state-owned). We will try to discover the various generic forms that these malpractices adopt, as well as explore the positive or negative perceptions that they generate on the Chilean corporate or institutional shareholders. Next, we will examine various alternatives to confront them (by reducing their occurrence or eliminating them) in order to improve the practices of corporate government in Chile.

This paper uses the approaches and concepts of competitive and comparative advantage models and the principles of economic corridors, including production chains, clusters and conglomerates, to analyze the potential for improved lime production in Peru’s northern regions for export to Asia Pacific markets. The first section discusses the relevance of adopting a strategy based on economic corridors as an efficient alternative to combine scale of production and efficient logistics costs, in particular for the Sullana-Tambogrande-San Lorenzo-Ayabaca and ChulucanasMorropon-Huancabamba corridors. The second section adopts a systemic view of agro-industrial competitiveness to identify the barriers to and ex ante conditions that have a positive impact on lime production, namely adoption of technologies, growers’ associations, access to financing, adoption of mechanized planting and harvesting techniques, and others.

Company dedicated to the import and marketing of veterinary products, owes most of its growth to the exclusive representation of the Tasmil brand, a world leader in animal health products. While the products might be geared at the poultry, cattle, pig, and pet sectors, currently 80% of the company’s sales are concentrated in the poultry market, which is the most organized livestock market in Peru, with the highest growth potential. The company wishes to continue growing, but it has already reached the limit in its traditional product line. Moreover, it faces liquidity restrictions due to the decreased turnover of some product lines aimed at the livestock sector. Finally, there is always the risk of loosing the Tasmil representation, or even worse, that Tasmil is attracted by the poultry market and decides to operate directly in the country.

This study is a metaphysical essay defining Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), through a series of Business Ethics texts covering the subject. The selected texts are written by Argentinean and Spanish authors rooted in the Social Teaching of the Church. The objective is to search the foundation of CSR as a moral obligation. The study begins with a logical approach, followed by a metaphysical one before engaging in ethical aspects. The meaning of «responsibility» and «CSR» concepts are defined. Regarding the concept’s metaphysical approach, the study is framed under Aristotelian categories of relationship and quality. From an ethical point of view, CSR is understood as a component of justice as virtue, and what specifically characterizes it is the acknowledgement of one’s own concurrence in the growth and development of the company’s relationship with its stakeholders. The question is posed whether the company, as such, acts in a moral manner –parallel to personal moral agency—. A delimitation of CSR actions is proposed.

The Willoq community and Peruvian Odyssey have joined efforts in order to bring the everyday life of the high Andean communities in the area of Ollantaytambo closer to tourists. This is known as «existential tourism», and has as a basic premise the preservation of the Andean Man’s customs and traditions. Perhaps the magic and charm experienced by those who visit the Willoq community resides in the vast and diverse landscape in front of them, as well as in the various cultural manifestations that are so different to theirs in terms of: organization, economy, religion, and a sustainable interaction through time with the environment. But we can also see the crude reality and difficulties of the Willoq community, as well as the illusion and hope with which they view an ever more globalized world.

Faced with the imminent entry of the industry leader into the market where Ficasac operates, the management of this company met to analyze and ultimately approve the convenience of expanding the product line. However, during the meeting several alternatives were brought up regarding equipment financing. These alternatives must be assessed in light of two possible future scenarios: taking advantage or not of the tax benefits of the border law. The results of such assessment shall be discussed the following day, for which it is necessary to prepare a report with recommendations on the matter.

The author proposes that corporations should self-evaluate the degree to which their performance towards their personnel, society and the nation is rated as socially responsible. He suggests 10 self-evaluation variables and a final overarching criterion. Quoting professor Sumantra Ghoshal, the author points to the need to review theoretical concepts that may have somehow dehumanized corporate management.

When the first productive organizations of the pre-industrial era appeared, man noticed that the development of these organizations had a negative impact, especially in terms of labor exploitation. However, man also foresaw the positive impacts: wealth and diversity of goods and products. This led later on, to the discussion of which role the companies must play in the development of society. Socialist movements and subsequent revolutions tried to eradicate labor exploitation within the corporate world. But socialism’s failure to eliminate social injustice only strengthened the capitalist model. The manner in which most companies perform their activities, based solely on profit, threatens to eradicate not only wage earners, but the planet itself. As a response to this, the concept of Socially Responsible Companies (SRC), emerging with great strength in the past decade, constitutes a rational and viable alternative in order to achieve a sustainable, desirable and necessary type of development.

Major greenfield mining projects are usually surrounded by conflict between the mining company and neighboring communities caused as much by the operator’s mistakes as by anti-mining coalitions and other organized groups rallied around sustainable development issues. For four years while preparation work was underway the mining company put into practice several strategies aimed at addressing claims, including participatory workshops all the way to hiring an expatriate professional expert charged with addressing environmental issues. A few months before the beginning of mine operations however tension peaked. A multi-sector technical commission was set up including government, residents and company representatives. The technical committee has already issued its report on the issue, including recommendations to keep a watchful eye on the company’s operations. In view of such developments, Coppermine must reframe its policies and strategies.

Raising awareness about the environmental risks faced by the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, providing tools for thinking that will contribute to addressing the Sanctuary’s problems, and finally, contributing to the debate by forwarding a proposal for the Sanctuary’s sustainable management are the purposes of this study. In the first section, statistics show Peru is basically a unipolar travel destination. The second section presents the complex problems identified at the Sanctuary. To conclude, the study presents a proposed solution, including setting up a structure to manage the Sanctuary’s strategic planning while abiding by the key principles of sustainable development.
