The fast pace of an AI Jam doesn’t give much time to stop and reflect. There are so many possibilities. So many sessions, breakout rooms, chats, resources … so many connections to be made. So many possibilities. After a pause to take deep breath, two of the jam’s organizing maestros share reflections on how important it is to jam together, and how this annual virtual, global and glocal gathering is developing into an appreciative, life-affirming Appreciative Inquiry tradition. And a Brazilian panel shares reflections on the results of healthier relationships in their organizations through the appreciative eye.

Futureproofing the Leadership Pipeline: An Appreciative Inquiry Exploring Reverse Mentoring to Prepare Millennials for Leadership in Pharmaceuticals
Pub Date : 2023-11-01 DOI: 10.12781/978-1-907549-57-1-5
Renata A. Walton, Kelley A. Conrad
To futureproof the leadership pipeline at a top worldwide pharmaceutical company, an appreciative inquiry among 75 employees improved the existing reverse mentoring program. Promotion of the study introduced approximately 300 employees to Appreciative Inquiry and the program, and resulted in a 25% increase in program participants. The study contributed to and expanded our understanding of Millennials’ proclivities, reverse mentoring best practices, and offered future practitioners examples for applying AI.

The Appreciative Paradigm: From Methodology to Paradigm
Pub Date : 2023-11-01 DOI: 10.12781/978-1-907549-57-1-2
Federico Varona
The time has come to move past a partial perspective, that Appreciative Inquiry is only a methodology, and begin to see it as a paradigm, a concept that includes a set of theories, research methods, postulates and standards for a new and legitimate way of contributing to the development of a field, one which differs and is distinguished from other, existing ones for that field. This first attempt to define the new paradigm is an invitation to the AI community of practitioners, scholars, students and readers to co-construct this new paradigm.

A Crown of Appreciative Sonnets
Pub Date : 2023-11-01 DOI: 10.12781/978-1-907549-57-1-4
Ada Jo Mann
After retirement, Ada Jo Mann explored poetry through classes at a local bookstore. The sonnet form intrigued her, the crown of sonnets, a ring of fifteen related sonnets that begin and end with the same line. She decided to explore this complicated structure through the lens of a topic close to her heart, Appreciative Inquiry.

Appreciative Inquiry and Essential Oils
Pub Date : 2023-11-01 DOI: 10.12781/978-1-907549-57-1-6
Mille Themsen Duvander
The author begins with the question ‘what have Appreciative Inquiry and essential oils to do with each other?’ Her journey toward the answer has taken a decade. She reaches the conclusion that essential oils, used judiciously, can heighten the energy in the room and lead to new ideas and a readiness to act on what has been discovered through the process of inquiring appreciatively.

Using Appreciative Inquiry to Improve Cultural Humility in Primary Healthcare

Primary care providers (PCPs) care for a more diverse population than ever before. PCPs must practice cultural humility to address inequities in health outcomes. The project aimed to introduce Appreciative Inquiry (AI) as a method to begin conversations surrounding cultural humility and raise awareness about its importance. Nurse practitioners working in primary care in both rural and urban settings participated. Results indicated that AI did impact PCP understanding and use of cultural humility in practice.

The contributions in this year’s open issue of AI Practitioner range from a new way of looking at Appreciative Inquiry, the Appreciative paradigm, to a new project/model for co-creating mutual value, with Appreciative Inquiry and strengths-based disciplines at its core, to a proposition that essential oils can boost the energy and positive responses during an appreciative inquiry. And there is a report from the 2023 AI Jam, organised by the Cooperrider Center from 19 to 21 October.

Businesses could, in partnership with their stakeholders, do even better than they are by identifying and capturing new value-creation opportunities that directly address the 17 UN development goals. Co-creating Mutual Value is an approach to using the positive core of a business, its ecosystem, and engagement of all voices.
