Adopting the Appreciative Inquiry approach in an organisational process requires practitioners to put aside specific mental models acquired during their education and professional training. Despite their goodwill, some people may be tempted to return to more traditional tools or exercises that are well-established in their way of doing things.

This case study describes how appreciative questions were used to address a need for the topic of gender diversity in the banking industry, in particular at the C-suite level. From September to December 2021, Appreciative Inquiry principles were used in the development of a transformational change process within a managers’ group, comprised of women and men, as well as with individuals. We are living through one of the most turbulent times in history, in the vortex of the intersection of the impacts of a pandemic, climate change acceleration and political polarization at a global level. Now, more than ever, all that we have learned in our work around creating equity, leveraging diversity and fostering inclusive cultures provides the foundational curriculum for dealing with this turbulent state. ‘Sustainable equity’ provides a framework for leaders who care about doing the right thing for their employees, their organizations and communities.
