How could we not be discouraged when, as soon as we proposed the Appreciative Inquiry approach, we faced a wall of resistance that created pressure to fall back on a more traditional problem-solving approach familiar to all? How could we give our clients the confidence to dare to go in search of dreams to improve efficiency and the work climate on construction sites? Small-scale experimentation, patience and generous listening and mutual respect made all the difference in the story.

In 1997, Morocco’s authorities chose professional service provider Lyonnaise des Eaux to resolve the problems with the provision of water and electricity in Casablanca. Ten years later, faced with a review, they found that projects hadn’t been documented. In preparing for a difficult review, the management neglected internal communications. Faced with a demoralized team, Jaouad Benhaddou turned to Zineb Benabdejlil who proposed using Appreciative Inquiry to find a positive way forward for the organisation. Zineb asked Jaouad to recount the experience for this article.

We are part of nature, not separate from it. Allowing ourselves and others to not only understand this cognitively but feel it, so we can act accordingly, has become ever more vital. Ecotones are a wonderful concept that can help us create this awareness and facilitate decision-making. In this article we explore how.
