In this paper, the radiation quality factor of cylindrical dielectric resonators has been evaluated by solving the characteristic equation of the chosen mode in the complex plane. In all cases this Q factor is too low for practical applications. So in order to prevent the losses by radiation we enclose the dielectric resonator in a metallic cylindrical shield. For such a geometry the unloaded quality factor of the shielded resonator has been calculated.

A novel configuration using GaAs varactors in a balanced circuit incorporating both coplanar waveguide and microstrip elements has permitted the construction of frequency dividers which have near-octave divide-by-two bandwidth and excellent response to pulsed r.f. inputs. The design and performance of such a frequency divider for inputs in the 4 to 8 GHz range is discussed.

An accurate solution to the problem of wave propagation along arbitrarily-configured transmission media composed of conductors and/or inhomogeneous dielectrics is presented. The solution is available in the form of a digital computer program, which yields computed cutoff frequencies and dispersion characteristics for both fundamental and higher-order modes. Sample calculations are presented for shielded microstrip, to illustrate the validity of the analysis, and channelized suspended microstrip. The solution approach presented is distinctive in its ability to easily treat complicated, salient features of arbitrary cross sections, as is typified by the channel in the suspended-microstrip example.

Amplifier evaluations in the 30 to 45 GHz frequency range have yielded device noise figures below 9 dB with up to 5 dB associated gain. Other reaults and a device model in close agreement with measured impedances are presented.

A new filter structure in which low loss linear phase filters can be realized is described. These filters are longitudinal, employ TE/sub 103/ dual mode resonators. Experimental results of such a filter are presented, compared with results of equivalent fundamental mode Chebyshev, linear phase filters. These results demonstrate that such filters are suitable for multiplexer in satellite transponders operating above 10 GHz.
