T. S. Eliot’s Misreading of Some Mythological Sources in The Waste Land 艾略特对《荒原》中某些神话来源的误读

Reading always entails an act of interpretation and all interpretation involves misreading. All poets cannot be separated from the previous ones. They must read and misread their precursors. T.S. Eliot misreads the mythological sources that he uses in his poem The Waste Land. This misreading is not a mistake, but it is meant to create new meaning to the available text. By misreading the previous texts, the poet creates a space of creativity for himself. There are six ways of misreading as explicated by Harold Bloom. In this article only three ways of misreading will be explained and applied, namely clinamen, tessera, and kenosis.

Hemingway’s Internal Deviation from His Primary Norm in The Old Man and the Sea 《老人与海》中海明威对基本规范的内在偏离

Ernest Hemingway is well known for the use of short and simple sentences when writing his novels since he aims at ‘[getting] the most out of the least’. This sentence-simplicity style is Hemingway’s primary norm. The Old Man and the Sea is the perfect example of this. However, in this novel, he sometimes uses long, complex sentences to describe certain points, and this sentence-complexity style can be said to be Hemingway’s secondary norm. In this case, there is a deviation within Hemingway’s own style of writing – an internal deviation. The deviation is obviously done on purpose as a kind of distraction so as to make the readers aware of the special and important ‘message’ that Hemingway wants to convey. In this novel, the deviation is used to build the elements of suspense and foreshadowing in much detail.

The Generic Structure of Print Advertisement of Elizabeth Arden’s INTERVENE: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis 伊丽莎白·雅顿《介入》平面广告的一般结构:多模态语篇分析

The Elizabeth Arden campaign with Catherine Zeta-Jones as the brand ambassador has deployed the semiotic resources of language and visual images. The analysis of this paper is based on the systemic functional linguistics (SFL) proposed by Halliday (1985, 1994) and Halliday and Matthiessen (2004), which says that a text is understood to simultaneously function three metafunctions: Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual. O’Toole’s (1994) framework of analysing visual images, which follows the main concept of SFL, is also used in the analysis. A multimodal discourse analysis is then applied to analyse one of the series, Intervene, using Cheong’s framework (2004), which combined both frameworks to find the generic structure of this advertisement. Further, this paper also analyses the intersemiosis of the linguistic and the visual resources using Wee’s (2009) intersemiotic mechanisms. It concludes that the interplay of the language and the visual image has proved to be very effective in the meaning-making process of this print advertisement.

The Captain’s Psychological Problems and the Process of His Withdrawal from Reality in Strindberg’s TheFather 斯特林堡《父亲》中上尉的心理问题及其脱离现实的过程

This paper will reveal the psychological complications of the Captain, the main character of Strindberg's The Father. The writers are interested in inquiring what kinds of fixation and anxiety that the Captain undergoes, how he tries to solve his anxieties, and how he finally withdraws from reality. Therefore, a psychological approach with Freud's psychoanalytic theory is utilized in dissecting the complexity of the mental condition of the Captain.

This paper discusses qualitative findings from a series of focus group discussions with six adult Malaysian men, aged 24-34, on the representation of men and masculinity in Men's Folio, a stylish lifestyle men's magazine. It highlights the extent to which the language used in the magazine's editorial content and advertisements that feature musculature images, fashion and style, and feminized grooming products and practices that have diversed impacts on the respondents' notions of a modern male identity.

Priorities in English Pronunciation Teaching in EFL Classrooms 英语课堂中英语语音教学的重点

This paper reports the priorities in English pronunciation teaching in Indonesian EFL classrooms focusing on the English varieties, components of pronunciation, and techniques for pronunciation teaching. The results indicated that (1) international English was valued as a more appropriate variety for Indonesian learners, (2) and that while depending on a limited range of rather traditional techniques of pronunciation instruction, Indonesian EFL teachers valued segmental features more than suprasegmental features.

This paper discusses the methodology and findings of a needs analysis survey which was carried out in 2005 by English Language Teaching Center (ELTC) of a private university in East Java, Indonesia. Based on the survey of 1,450 students' and 34 teachers' language needs, some implications related to course type, teaching methodology and course materials were made.

This paper aims at extending our understanding of a problematizing practice in Critical Applied Linguistics by exploring issues pertaining to political "confusion syndrome" Discourses. Central to this practice is how EFL teachers and learners depart from their reluctance to explore political issues. Being scaffolded with a working model of such Discourses and a suggested simulation practice, they are hoped to learn how to sympathize with politicians' confusion.

The study on the characters' multiple violations in Desperate Housewives film shows that in violating the maxims, each person has his own reason specifically in lying. Using Grice's Cooperative Principle and Christoffersen's criteria of lying, the findings revealed that violating all maxims was meant to eliminate the interlocutor's chance to respond, violating three maxims was to cover the truth and violating two maxims was to create another lie in the future.

In the teaching of English as a foreign language in Indonesia, the teaching and testing of English grammar are indispensable. To test English grammar mastery, the multiple choice test must be used due to its merit of guaranteeing the fulfillment of the content validity of achievement tests. Unfortunately, the construction of many multiple choice test items has not been based on a very important consideration to aid learning processes. This paper discusses the need to use multiple choice test in English grammar achievement testing, two cognitive learning theories that underlie the importance of constructing multiple choice items that aid learning processes, and examples of faulty multiple choice test items and their revisions.
