The organizational universe represents society, in all details, as a complex and multifaceted social relations environment. As a locus of professional and personal identification of individuals who interact, it can be interpreted as the environment where individual and group interests may be conflicting, in order to consolidate their position and access to resources. This paper, prepared on the results from a single case study and analysis of narratives, evidenced elements to allow comprehensive analysis of interpersonal relationships in the R & D area of a familiar industrial organization, in the south of the country. The analysis was constructed in comparison with the theoretical perspectives of the organizational culture, due to the relevance of the innovation management program instituted by the organization. The content of the narrative, drawn from indepth interviews with eleven technicians has provided evidence of the influence of interpersonal relationships in this area, on the criteria that guided the decisions regarding the allocation of resources and definition of the form of implementation of the research activities. It was possible to identify aspects of building interpersonal relationships, as well as the manifestation of behaviors based on the symbolic interpretation, which can contribute to the reflection on ways of management.

In this paper we discuss the role of organizations in the reinforcement of discriminatory practices, as well we reflect about the evolvement and reaction of minorities who suffer discrimination. Symbolic violence is one of the cruelest forms of segregation and discrimination, even more when it is masked through “good intentions”. In this study we have analyzed the installation of LGBTs’ bathrooms in a block of a samba school, in an agricultural fair, and in a high school. We based our discussion on Auge’s concept of non-place (1994), as exclusive and neutral spaces, although this neutrality is not perceived in social dynamics. Conclusions suggest that non- places are just ideal places, where not even bathrooms elude of symbolic dynamics that are, also, surrounded and imbricated in social relations.

The essay aims to discuss implications and methodological possibilities of analyzing media discourse participating in the social (re)construction of active institutional patterns. Drawing on Phillips, Lawrence and Hardy's (2004) framework, discourse and organizational institutionalism are articulated, inserting media as a participant in constructing social reality as an actor that is both influenced by and influential inside in an institutional context, appearing as a symbolic system, and as an interactional loci. Implications and possibilities regarding how to proceed methodologically in terms of performing empirical investigations approaching and studying media discourse in organizations – and in organizational fields – are outlined.

The consumption of non-prescribed medicines, known as over-the-counter (OTC), has increased the sales in retail pharmacy in Brazil. Due to this growth, this paper tried to analyze this phenomenon through the studies of interpersonal influence that was made so far in marketing. Thus, as objective, it was proposed to identify the key factors that make it possible to discriminate consumers who use OTC medicines or not self-medication. Due to this, self-medication was studied as a phenomenon in which the consumer receives or not some information for the decision making, instead of receiving information by a healthcare professional. Thus, the collected information was from two distinct groups: people who say they receive interpersonal influence (1) and people who say they do not receive interpersonal influence (0). Soon after, this information was inserted into a database and analyzed within the set of techniques that was part of the discriminant analysis. As a result, the variables that demonstrated not to discriminate these groups were: the influence of pharmacists and attendants. On the other hand, the variables that discriminate clusters, using equation, were: other medicine’s recommendation, brand (both with low discrimination power), taste other drugs and the influence of advertising (both with high discrimination power).

This article investigates if companies with a stricter control and monitoring system perform better than others in Brazil. The works compares 116 companies in respect to the their independence level between top management team and board directors– being that measured by four parameters, namely, the percentage of independent outsiders in the board, the separation of CEO and chairman, the adoption of contingent compensation and the percentage of institutional investors in the ownership structure – and their financial return measured in terms return on assets (ROA) from the latest Quarterly Earnings release of 2012. Two variables (percentage of outside directors and percentage of institutional investor ownership) are significant in the regression. This paper has provided evidences that the increase in the formal governance structure trough outside directors in the board and ownership by institutional investor might actually lead to worse performance.

The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between the Board Interlocking practices and business characteristics of family ownership structure which have more stocks traded in BM&FBovespa. Study descriptive being conducted through desk research, with a quantitative approach. The information was collected from the financial reports of 23 Brazilian open capital companies of family ownership structure, classified by the Open Capital Magazine. The results show that the Board Interlocking practice occurred in 57% of the companies in the sample, indicating that it is a common practice. Show also a significant relationship between the variables Board Interlocking practices and characteristics of family ownership structure and control, with a canonical correlation of 83% and a canonical R of 69%. It is concluded that the Interlocking Board practices by members of the board of directors, directors and supervisory board is adopted in the surveyed companies, despite the tendency of family ownership structure be more concentrated.

The relationships between citizens and governments have been complemented by the intensive use of Information Technology and Communication (ICT) for transactional services online. The Brazilian Innovation Portal was developed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MSTI) in partnership with the Center for Strategic Studies and Management (CSSM), Brazilian Association for Industrial Development (BAID) and Instituto Stela to meet demands the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation (NSSTI). Based on Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and structural equation modeling technique, the main results of this study showed high predictive significance and magnitude of the Behavioral Intention of Use Portal by the following factors: Expected Performance and Social Influence. Therefore, the social factor is highly influential in the intention to use the technology as well as aspects related to user productivity and the consequent sense utility, plus the ease of interaction and domain tool. Such findings supplement new perspectives in studies in the field of e-Gov, as well as in evaluation of government projects.

We analyze in this paper which and how social representations of profit are produced in the commercialization of religious products. The analysis is oriented by an interpretative approach, which presupposes that sharing representations is a way to share an idea, and, therefore, to affirm an identity and a belonging to a group. Studies in the fields of Social Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology are the basis of this research. We used content analysis technique to analyze interviews with thirty organizations from the following religions: catholic, evangelic, spiritism, umbanda and candomble , located in four cities. Results show that the process of generation of profit representational content undergoes different discrepancies: distortions, supplementations, and subtractions. And, thus, this representation reveals its practical character of adjusting the subject to its surroundings, its orientation of action, and its interpretation of the experience and of conduct organization in material, moral and symbolic contexts.
