This study examined the performance of 16 real estate companies with shares on the BM&FBOVESPA in the period 2009-2012. The importance of this sector to the economy and the recent entry of these companies in the capital market requires that studies of this nature contribute to the better understanding of relative risk and return of these companies. For this, statistics and quantitative evaluation models based on performance CAPM, Sharpe Ratio, Treynor Ratio, Information Ratio, Jensen's Alpha and Modigliani & Modigliani Index were applied to the sample. The results show that the company Helbor was the best investment option, because it showed the best performance based on 04 of the 06 analyzed indexes, five other companies were above the industry results in performance indexes. It was also possible to select a diversified portfolio with five active samples where the performance of this portfolio was superior to the individual assets. Thus, it is predicted that the study period was favorable to real estate companies, as the average performance of the companies outperformed the stock index. In addition, we managed to create a diversified portfolio, due to the different segments that the industry congregates (construction, incorporation and management of enterprises).

The Sao Francisco Valley is located in wine’s New World, where the development of brands is the dominant orientation. Thus, the identity of these wines is linked to their brands. The identity mark, traditionally discussed a policy-strategic management, can also be conceived as discursive identity resulting from various vectors as well as strategic formulations. Here, in a purposeful, assume the identity of brands as a result of identification processes in a culture, so cultural identity, which approaches the discursive conception. We seek to understand how identities are constructed of wine brands in the Sao Francisco Valley. Therefore, we examined the critical discourse, based on Systemic Functional Linguistics M. A. K. Halliday, interviews with three groups of agents: producers, consumers and intermediaries. We reached 20 strokes identity, which, grouped conceptually defined six cultural identities: shy, responsible, jovial, honest, mediocre and traditional. The results point to a construction of identities anchored in a system of references dominant, resulting in disregard of the typicality of the region in an attempt to quell the difference and align itself with the dominant discourse.

This paper provides an analysis of the influence of human resource practices on the evaluation that employees make related to Competence of Human Resource Management in their organizations. This purpose was brought to an end with the completion of a survey of 347 employees in eight service organizations in Brazil. We tested nine hypotheses about the relationship between HR practices and assessing the Competence of HR Management of these organizations. Through the application of a Multiple Regression Analysis it was found that the consideration of compensation variables (Compensation and Benefits) does not markedly modify the model´s explanatory power about the change in the attitude of employees concerning the Competence of HR Management, which gives much importance on the variables called Working Conditions. Among Working Conditions the variable Communication is the one, which has more influence on the judgment of Competence of HR Management. This finding places at the forefront the development of social communication for recognizing the strategic role of Human Resource Management.

Among the different heuristics theories that attempt to explain the decision making process, this study explores the gambler's fallacy and the hot hand theory. This paper investigates the influence of self-regulation in heuristics and biases used during consumer decision making. Two experiments were conducted. The first one assessed if results of past performance of stocks affected consumer preference to buy or sell those stocks. Results indicated a significant difference between gender in decision making, with the occurrence of the gambler's fallacy for the male sample, but not for the female sample. The second experiment investigated the role of self-regulation in the gambler's fallacy and hot hand bias. Results showed that after the induction of self-regulation, it was noticed the gambler's fallacy and the hot hand theory in some conditions, indicating changes in the decisions made by consumers. We conclude that there is a significant influence of affective state in decision making and that women are less susceptible to the gambler's fallacy than men.

The objective of the study was to analyze the relationship between the public effort for the advancement of science and technology through investments made by the National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq) and technical-scientific production of the country in terms of publication of papers in journals and patent generation. The theoretical basis discussed the concepts about science, technology and innovation (ST&I) and the Brazilian context to encourage ST&I. The research question deals with the relationship between investment in science and technology, publishing and technical production in Brazil. The study was of a descriptive nature with quantitative treatment by correlation analysis. Means of investigation were by literature and documents. The data collecting consisted of identifying the investments made by CNPq described on its balance sheet for the years 2002 to 2010 and the technical-scientific production in this period. The results indicate the existence of the relationship between investment in S&T with the technical-scientific production. With regard to publication, it is observed that this correlation has five of the seven items of investments analyzed and low correlation with two items. Regarding the technical production, there are also correlated with five of the seven items.

Nonprofit organizations are increasing their participation in society and are also pursuing tools that facilitate the management leadership and control of their work routines, in the Administration area of knowledge. These organizations also present the adoption of strategic planning techniques, which happens to make the acceptance of the project portfolio management methodology a natural consequence. Based on this context, the goal of this paper is to verify a Specialized Medical Association’s the practices developed in selecting projects, by using models of project portfolio management. Through an exploratory case study as a research strategy and qualitative evaluation technique, we conclude that the organization develops strategic planning for fundraising and partially and informally applies the process of selecting projects for portfolio composition. The analysis in the light of the four models, identified that there is a model applicable to the case studied, but some of these phases are adherent, and other hard to fit the context of nonprofit organizations. Finally, the conclusion motivates reflection and expectation on the need to develop methodologies applied to the nonprofit sector that contemplates the characteristics and peculiarities of these organizations.

The transportation planning must take into account the quality of life of the community and its users. It is believed that the cost and the quality of service offered are decisive factors in the selection of alternatives by users. Thus, the study presents a procedure for understanding the transport modal choice of passenger according to two attributes: time and travel cost. This study aims, through a sensitivity analysis, to understand the likely behavior of passengers and their alternatives through permutation of collective and individual options. The application of the methodological procedure enhances the understanding of the behavior of passengers on its available means of transport. The Sensitivity Analysis tool allows transportation planners to realize that the choice of alternative transport is closely related to the individual's family income.

The industrial districts are clusters of associated companies in theory with the innovation factor and policies for development based on clusters, locational advantages and potential locations. This study aimedto identify typologies of organizational culture prevalent in firms located in industrial districts of Maracanau, in the State of Ceara. The survey with 3271 workers of the 50 largest companies concluded by the not predominance of culture of innovation (26.7 % ), but a cultural mosaic of cultures almost homogeneous market (29.2 % ), in socialising with traditional hierarchical cultures (22.5 %) and of clan (21.7 % ), according to the typologies of Cameron & Quinn, suggesting rich organizational densification as a result of public policy.

This research aimed to examine the effects of adopting corporate governance mechanisms on the market value of publicly traded companies of the Brazilian electric sector in the period 2008-2012. To that end, a governance quality index was constructed, using the Principal Component Analysis method, involving 12 variables representing the governance mechanisms recognized by the agency theory, based on works by Correia (2008) and Peixoto (2012). This index was used in the regressions with panel data, in association with Tobin's Q and MBA (market-to-book on assets). The results revealed a negative and significant relationship, which may be linked to the particularities of the electricity sector, or to the fact that the Brazilian capital market is underdeveloped, or even to the low level of liquidity of companies.
