A critical analysis is made of the digital image, given the incompleteness of the process of assimilation of analog photography by numerical technologies. Vilem Flusser’s philosophical apparatus and Foucault’s concept of emulation are employed here to interpretthe digitization that occurred in the 1990s as an industrial project that was aimed primarily at the emulation of analog technologies by digital ones. After this historical moment of technological transformations, a detached analysis allows one to hypothesize that the digital photographic image begins to assume an interstitial position between indexical fulguration and computational algorithms. This perspective allows for a better understanding of image production in art, which does not entirely deny the indexicality of photography, but also refuses to ignore other possible contemporaneous modes of existence of the image.

Resumo: O texto discute as expressoes utilizadas para caracterizar a experiencia de imersao em games narrativos. O ponto de partida e uma revisao dos significados associados a suspensao de descrenca na literatura, no cinema e na televisao, orientada pelo questionamento do mito da audiencia ingenua, incapaz de distinguir entre a representacao e a realidade. Duas caracteristicas das narrativas midiaticas interativas – o exercicio da agencia e as disparidades entre as interfaces de hardware e software – evidenciam o carater ativo do envolvimento do publico com as representacoes midiaticas. Propoe-se que, no caso dos games, essa habilidade que permite agir simultaneamente no mundo do jogo e no mundo real estaria melhor caracterizada como uma encenacao de crenca.

The vindication of the memory of the Civil-Military Dictatorship in contemporary Brazilian cinema intensifies. This article recollects documentaries of the 1980s, and ideas and authors that have been examined before in order to attain to discuss the use of testemonies and film footage from the period of the dictatorship on recent audiovisual production, and their mode of performatively assuming the lack – of documents, memory, and images. Uma longa viagem [A Long Journey] and Que bom te ver viva [How Nice to See You Alive], both by filmmaker Lucia Murat, will be analyzed, among others, from the standpoint of these issues.

This paper discusses the hermeneutic power ofa celebrity (seen from the concept of event), seeking to understand what it reveals about the contemporary context. Based on this premise, we attempt to recognize some aspects of contemporary social life that emerge from the trajectory of a specific celebrity: the former soccer player Ronaldo Fenomeno. This analysis brings to light the hermeneutic power of Ronaldo, i.e., how his life story reveals characteristics of contemporary social life. Individualism, machismo, emphasis on a heteronormative ideal, shifts in the construction of romantic relationships, and the overlapping spheres of public and private life, are some important aspects of contemporary society revealed by this analysis.

This study analyzes 10 ads published in the magazines Veja and Realidade in 1967 and 1968, seeking to understand how the notion of youth is constructed by the media within a particular cultural, social and political context. The methodology consists of a literature review, a documentary research of the two magazines, and an analysis of the media representations of youth culture, values and practices. This leads to the establishment of several possible ideal-type categories that are present in the advertising narrative. Throughout the analysis, one finds that the media uses positive values attributed to youth, while contributing to cement the opposition between youth and adult.

This paper investigates interactional practices on expanded musical radio (from Hertzian airwaves to the Internet), taking as a case study the podcast Muqueca de Siri, which is dedicated to samba. Throughout the text, we discuss the pertinence of the ethnographic approach in researches about the reception/consumption of music radio in a new media environment with continually multiplying possibilities of sound production and circulation, shaping communities of listeners who switch between online and offline worlds.

Este artigo investiga os agenciamentos hibridos entre agentes de interface e agentes humanos nos ambientes sociocomunicacionais de streaming de musicas LastFM, Grooveshark e Deezer, com base nas nocoes de agenciamento (Deleuze e Guattari) e semiose (Peirce). O modelo peirceano da semiose e tomado como parâmetro conceitual para explicar o funcionamento do agenciamento hibrido entre homem e maquina nesses ambientes. Propoe-se a nocao de agenciamento semiotico para compreender o aprendizado continuo e aprimorado da maquina a partir das acoes humanas nos ambientes pesquisados, assim como as articulacoes das acoes humanas baseadas nos mecanismos de recomendacao. As relacoes de continuidade entre as mentes dos agentes humanos e as dos agentes de interface sao abordadas na perspectiva da Teoria do Sinequismo de Peirce, relacionada a sua nocao de semiose.

This paper maps some relevant events for an understanding of the cosplay scene in Brazil’s southeastern state capitals. It discusses part of the interpretation of data collected during the Anime Winter Fest in Belo Horizonte, MG, in 2013, and the Vitoria Anime Show in Vitoria, ES, in 2013, based on a comparative analysis and considering the heterogeneity of the cosplay scene. Studies about the contemporary city and notions about circulation, as well as research about youth culture, are linked with reflections about material and media consumption in the cosplay scene, forming the theoretical framework and methodology on which this study is based.

This article starts from the premise that a considerable part of the interpretations and criticisms of the agenda-setting theory focus on statements about the most general conclusions in agenda-setting research rather than on its fundamentals, limits and conditions of validity. On the other hand, it defends the legitimacy of some criticisms of the theory, more specifically those related to the design of agenda-setting research, the methods whereby it is investigated, and how the relevance (salience) of its themes is presented. In this regard, the intention is to point out how some of these criticisms have been overcome through the systematization of some possibilities for the expansion of the centripetal and centrifugal dimensions of this paradigm when investigated by means of WWW systems and environments.

The French director Robert Bresson was known for his creative use of sound elements and the scanty insertion of music in his films. In films produced during the intermediary phase of his career, such as A man escaped (1956), Pickpocket (1959) and Au hasard Balthazar (1966), preexisting classical music pieces, which contain formal aspects that are analogous to their distribution in the respective films, were used as non-diegetic music. Moreover, in Pickpocket, the preexisting music by Lully also relates to the voice-in and voice-over. The voice-in at the end of the dialogues usually triggers musical excerpts, which are inserted in situations of movement and whose function resembles that of divertissements in baroque opera. We also consider the relations between voice-in and voice-over and the lag between the latter and the action and the image of the main character’s diary as it is being written.
